Why do people treat the Bible likes it’s really a reliable source of information?

The correct answer to this goes back to history and the schism of the catholic church, which had the Pope as its de-facto head.

For all their hatred of catholics, most American protestants don't know their own history, with many of them thinking that history began on July 4th 1777 or something.

When the corruption of the Catholic church demanded that breakaway religions formed (Martin Luther, John Calvin, etc...) they needed to replace the Pope as the head of their church. They needed some sort of authority, from whom the rules could be derived.

It was easy in England. Henry the 8th just declared himself the head of the Church of England. For the other sects, like Methodists, Calvinists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Lutherans, and so on, endless division and subdivision seemed inevitable. They were all Protestant, but each one was following the particular beliefs of (usually) one man.

The decision was made that scripture would be the ultimate authority. Inerrant and infallible (if) it was the Word of God.

This meant that in order to turn their backs on a corrupt man, the Pope, the Protestants had to swallow a lot of nonsense in the bible and declare it as fact and the error free word of god.

This was a huge problem for every inconsistency in the bible, and for every time that science proved something in the bible to be wrong. But it does explain to you why so many evangelical americans are anti-science and anti-catholic, and treat the bible as a reliable source of historical and scientific information instead of a moral *guide* book.

Because most people, Christians especially, are taught the Bible as a source of nonfiction, and are told not to question or check it.

Most people are also not educated on how to properly fact check and explore materials in a non-biased manner

The implication is a lack of rigor, intellectual and otherwise.
A 2004 meta-analysis by Richard Lynn and Paul Irwing published in 2005 found that the mean IQ of men exceeded that of women by up to 5 points on the Raven's Progressive Matrices test.
