The first picture isn't an inverted cross. It's the British MBE award. It's been altered in the picture you posted.

The second picture was in bad taste and was immediately pulled from the shelves. For existing albums a new picture was pasted over the old one. A few were sold before it was pulled. If you ever find one buy it because they are valuable. If you find one that's been pasted over, don't pull the new picture off because it's more valuable if you leave it on.

The Beatles say it was intended as a statement against the Vietnam War. Whether that's true or not we'll never know. But there were a lot of similarly graphic pictures, songs and films against the war.
