Should religion be a reason to let a sick child die?

Today I was watching an episode of a show called Babylon 5 that involved parents and a child. Said child has a lung condition that is easily fixed via a small surgery. The perents declined the surgery stating that only animals are cut open, and that to cut their son open he would essentially lose his soul. Now I don't agree with what the doctor did, he found a way to perform the surgery anyway, against the parents wishes, behind their back. When they found out about it, they killed their son.

I am of the mind set that if religion is a reason for not getting life saving care for a child, one, there is a special place in hell for you, and two, the child should be taken from you, and you should be jailed. Sorry I value life over superstition.

I generally have zero issues with religion, unless said religion supports violence against others or letting children die because God.. That is where I draw the line.

What do you think? Say a child has a curable disease, all they need is a surgery or an antibiotic, but the parents religion says to refuse treatment because it's God's will. How do you feel about that?
