On just the natural and psychological level? First of all, there's something about being told "you're forgiven, your debts are paid" that brings a sense of peace, comfort, and relief.
Then there's the community, which offers support and commonality of purpose and mission. You're with like-minded people who can support and encourage you, and elders who have been where you are and give you guidance and insight.
And lastly, I can only speak for Catholicism, but the repetition provides a sense of balance, order, and normalcy. You're in a rigid routine that helps elevate your mind, to lift it to something greater in times of darkness and struggle.
It negates reality. Something bad happens to you oh that's just god testing you. Someone dies oh ill just see them in heaven. Someone does something bad to you oh don't worry they will end up in hell. In reality bad shit happens with no meaning, when someone dies you never see them again and bad people get away with horrible shit with no negative consequences all of the time.
