And one day we all woke up and we're offended by everything.

People like you contribute to the decline of society we've been experiencing the past few years for this exact reason. Litterally NOBODY had any issues with these kinds of thing until very recently, now suddenly a few left-wing politicians make a declaration and suddenly all of their followers (or peasants, that's a more accurate description) follow the leader without giving a nanosecond of thought to the reasoning, or lack thereof, of the mindset change. Then to top it all off these people harass others who do think about and refuse to go along with it, saying some of the most hateful and bigoted things I've ever heard.

People who make these arguments disgust me.

I can see why some of these images/choices of costumes can cause offence.

What fascinates me more than anything is the choice of costumes that people wear? I can understand someone dressing up as a witch, a devil, a vampire or werewolf but why would anyone dress up as a Mexican? Blacken their face or whiten their face? When I was a kid, Halloween was about ghouls, monsters and things that went bump in the night. So I just don't understand where or when stupid costumes like the above became the normality for Halloween?

Exactly. In all my years dressing up as a kid, dressing as a minority was never an option. You were a ballerina or a baseball player, someone who could be anyone, but specifically dressing up as another race that is not your own and essentially the purpose is to make fun of that race or act in a racist manner... yeah, I have a problem with that. The problem is the people dressing like this aren't dressing like this and just walking around... they are changing their voice to mimic other races in a derogatory manner, they're making fun of the other race, and they are portraying them in a negative light.

I don't get the whole dressing up as anything other than traditional Haloween ghoulies and monsters, like a baseball player or ballerina doesn't equate to what I feel is Halloween, maybe I am old fashioned and don't fully understand the concept of Halloween.

I can understand why you feel the way you do and I can understand where those who feel opposite to you, but as a white man, I don't find the image of the black man who has "whitened his face" as being racist or offensive. To me, it's just imagine and a stupid Halloween costume. I can see why people would find it offensive and I think it's stupid. I remember a person was reported in the news as attending a Halloween party dressed as Bin Laden; it's just stupid but there you go, some people will do anything to garner attention.

It's just this sickness that people still think its okay to dress up as another race... not just that, but the offensive stereotypes, and slaves with white masters, and with scalps in hand, and with eyes taped back. As the first image points out, I'm a real person and you're making fun of that and not in a funny way, but intentionally in a racist manner. I wouldn't condone the black person in white face anymore than the white person in black face. It's just sad that there are a million different costumes out there, literally, and these people pick ones that they quite frankly know are offensive because they feel Halloween gives them the right to be as offensive as possible with no real repercussions.

Gag is hardly the most accurate sampling poll of a population and most respondents aren't from what I gather minorities so its quite easy to say as someone the offense isn't meant for, that you don't care or its not offensive because it doesn't personally affect you. "Overly sensitive," is the go to phrase for individuals who don't have to deal with this or racism in their lives. Rather then say, you know what, what that particular person or individual is doing is racist, and we should shut that down, they just figure erroneously that its about them personally (and it may actually be) and that when they hear the word racist it automatically means someone is trying to speak ill of them. It's sadly what helps perpetuate the continuation of racism and racist behaviors and activities.

Just because you say something isn't offensive, doesn't mean it isn't especially if you aren't the target of the offending. Nothing in this world would ever get done or would improve if we went by the train of thought... since "everyone else" seems to be apathetic, no one should care or do anything.

It's so sad that these privileged fuckers don't even realize that they're taking pieces of other people's cultures that don't belong to them, turning it into a cheap/fake stereotype, which is SO goddamn disrespectful and shitty. What's worse is the ones claiming that they're "celebrating" their cultures or "paying homage" to them. Like what the actual fuck. Native Americans have literally died and fought over their culture, to be able to keep whatever they have. And then these privileged assholes take it and turn it into a fucking "sexy" polyester costume for 15 bucks, and then have the nerve to tell them that they don't have the right to feel offended, despite the fact that these people are more or less SHITTING all over their culture. And as if that's not enough they ALSO have the nerve to tell them that this is a way for them to "CELEBRATE" their culture. WHAT the ACTUAL fuck. You guys are assholes.

so... when a japanese or British (or both) girl wears a german bar waitress costume, why don't the germans get pissed and riot?
that's making fun of german culture.

last year when i saw hundreds of japanese kids on the street dressed in ”caucasian culture” costumes like barbie doll, American blonde cheerleader or a fairy/pixie (which is part of european culture), should i have been offended, thrown a fit and beat them up on the spot? because i'm half white and i don't like it that they're frolicking around making fun of my culture.

@COCOCHANEL Native Americans died trying to protect their culture and their people from the Europeans that basically invaded and took over their land, killed their people. It's incredibly offensive to then take the pieces of their culture that they tried so hard to protect, to make cheap knockoffs and then sell them to people who just want to look "sexy" or "funny". As for the geisha thing, it's still cultural appropriation. To the people who have to wear a geisha's outfit, it's not just a costume to put on for a night once a year, it's their everyday lives. It's important to think about who you're affecting and what you're taking from others.

i really don't see how it's offensive to wear a costume depicting another culture.
what if i looked more white and did japanese culture stuff in america.
would people who just assumed i was ”just white” try to call me out for being racist?

did you know that in kyoto (where the geishas are) there is a service where anyone can rent the look for the day and frolick around in the streets. geishas don't find it offensive. lol they are not forced into what they do either. nobody has to wear anything.

@COCOCHANEL like I said, Native Americans died for their culture. Of course you don't see it as offensive since you're incapable of sympathizing with them and seeing their perspective on the topic.

There's a difference between having the permission to dress up as a geisha in legitimate clothing, and picking up a cheap knockoff at some random party boutique that does absolutely no justice to the original piece of clothing. I didn't say that they are forced to do what they do, either. I just said that it's their everyday lives, not a random party costume.

incapable of sympathizing with them? lol
that's a lot of assumption on your part.
you're from finland, right? how many native americans have you known personally?
i lived in america and had native American friends. i even spent a week on a reservation when i was 8. my half brother is part sioux.

about the service i mentioned, it's not permission. it's not a copyrighted thing you have to go out and get permission to wear.
you know why? because you can't copyright culture. that's what a British friend said to me when i complained that victorian fashion was being stolen and mocked by other races.

what does quality have to do with anything? we have cheap knockoffs of geisha and maiko here too. people wear them at parties. it's very common for men wear a cheap geisha costume (maid and schoolgirl are also popular choices) at company parties for a laugh.

well you kinda implied that when you said that geishas ”have” to wear the outfit. they can quit anytime.

@COCOCHANEL considering that you don't see an issue with taking parts of the Native American culture, things they literally died for in order to protect, and making cheap knockoffs out of them that kids can wear to a party says a lot about where your sympathies lie. I don't know any Native Americans personally no, but at least I listen to them when they tell people to stop abusing their culture. At least I can respect their wishes and sympathise with them because I'm educated on the matter. The fact that you don't see a problem with it shows how little you care and sympathise with them.
I meant that with the renting service, I assume you get more of a genuine experience since you're at least wearing the correct clothing, yeah? And not some cheap knockoff that's essentially just a bikini that you bought on ebay.
You can't copyright culture no, but you can abuse it, disrespect it, stereotype it and mock it. That's pretty much what all racist Halloween costumes do.

@COCOCHANEL and it's different when someone who's a part of that culture does it, because they're stil a part of that culture and they're aware/educated. Taking something from someone else's culture is different.

they just like the costume and want to adorn themselves with it. yes if you have the means, higher quality will look better.

i don't understand why you think you're more educated than me and others who have a different viewpoint. no offense, but you come across as a brainwashed liberal and that's your choice so it's fine with me.

in addition to being biracial, in terms of life experience i have 9 years on you and have lived in a few different countries with very different cultures but apparently since i have a different way of thinking you have decided that i'm ”incapable” and less educated than you.

i do understand that in european culture the age of the person doesn't matter and there's no reason to assume yours elders are wiser than you in any way, shape or form so that's fine too.

I think this is not really that big of a deal, I really don't. It isn't meant to be nasty, they aren't wearing KKK outfits, if that stupid bint who "identifies as afro-carribean" can walk around pretending to be black then why can't we all?

A lot of these costumes are traditional dress, are you suggesting traditional dress is insulting and only the people from that culture can wear it? That's ridiculous if you are.

If a black person dyes their hair blonde should I feel insulted?

As Esplorare said, there are black people who naturally have blond hair and blue eyes just as there are Asian people who have afro style hair, so those aren't traits specific to a race. YOu also didn't see this post b/c clearly there is and have been individuals wearing KKK outfits and dressing in black face and wearing slave chains... and for what purpose? This is the offensive part I'm talking about. People who dress up and tape their eyes back and make all sorts of racist comments "b/c oh, its just a costume." If that's not acceptable on Friday, how then is it magically acceptable on Saturday. It's not, and you're not going to convince me that its cool if someone things they can dress up as another race and insult them literally, and I should just shrug it off. I actually have respect for myself enough to realize that something and someone like that isn't right.

I can understand why painting yourself white, black, yellow... can be offensive, but how can someone get offended by wearing a costume? I don't see Romans getting offended when people dress as Romans. Seriously, people get offended so easily, and it's always the same people.

So dressing up as a Klu Klux Klan member is cool b/c it's 'just a costume.' Really? The KKK is still in affect, their entire purpose was basically to hate or kill minorities, and then to have two people dressed in black face hugging them... really? This is just a bit of fun to you? It's disgusting and so is going about taping ones eyes to be "an Asian" or going around with bombs dressed as "an Arab."

That is often the issue when something is offensive. It is those who are either doing the offending or who aren't affected by the offense (i. e., they aren't Native American, Asian, etc) who are quick to say something isn't offensive. It's convenient and the easiest way for someone doing the offending to write it off as just a joke. The KKK isn't a joke to me, neither is someone dressing up as a terrorist with a bomb. These are real people, not imagined ones. Even in your description, it's like do you even hear yourself and what you're saying. You're saying its acceptable to you, but from your picture, you're not black so how is it you are the authority on what a black person seeing someone dressed in a KKK uniform should be feeling when you haven't experienced the history behind it? So Monday morning, its okay for you to walk into school wearing black face or a KKK hood b/c its "just a joke." Yeah, no, it isn't because it is racist and offensive.

We're talking about HALLOWEEN! If it's done any other time of the year I can see the offense in that, but not during a holiday where it's all about having fun. Did I say I'm the authority? No. I jut said that in my opinion it's stupid to be offended by something like that.
I don't care if they make fun about my race or nationality, as long as it's just for fun and not trying to be offensive.

@shadiamond well, it's Halloween, that's the purpose, to dress as something (originally it was something scary or that causes violence, therefore it's more normal to dress as the KKK than as a slutty nurse). If you dress as Jason on Halloween no one's gonna say anything, but dress as Jason any other day and expect the cops to stop you and have people running away from you.

I specifically pointed out racist costumes for a reason. A cowboy can literally be anybody, man, woman, child, any race. My issue is with people who put on KKK hoods, and black/white face, or put on costumes such as "Arab bomber" that intentionally are racist and mock people's culture/race. Halloween used to be about people being Ballerina's, and cops, and ghosts, but somehow now, some people think its okay to be racist on Halloween.

It makes you feel GOOD to actually think I went anonymous because of you, it's hilarious and you're a joke. That's what bullies do except I don't take crap from anyone. Disrespect me, best believe you're gonna get disrespected 10x harder than you think. You're nothing zero. I feel nothing for you but laughter lol. You're definitely a hood rat, look at your behavior. You're always bothering me and getting on my nerves, get it through your head I DO NOT LIKE YOU at all lol. Gosh smh when are you gonna get it through your ugly self.

Its amazing how you have to try and bring people down to your level I mean you even admitted yourself on that one question of yours that you were ugly and then you took it so personal when I just told you that you weren't attractive you asked for our honesty so I gave it to you. It was a good amount of guys that made you go anonymous 16 I believe so your insecurity went down even more and you went anonymous. There is no other absolutely no other reason someone goes anonymous besides having shame lol you got shamed and you try to mirror your own image on to me that's a self defense mechanism right there its called projection.

I'm doing great for myself and don't need some internet guy trying to make me feel like I am because I know darn well I am and Idc what you or anyone else say about me. I know myself VERY well, you don't so talk about things you ACTUALLY know about.

I did not call myself ugly, It was a simple question for a freaking project!! GET. IT
THORUGH. YOUR. HEAD. I don't need peoples improvement on my appearance. I LOVE myself too darn much to give af.

First of all I didn't take it personally. My question was specific. "WHAT doesn't make attractive" or something like that and you specially said I look like a hoodrat. Last time I check a hoodrat is a ho from the hood. I am virgin so the ho part isn't true, I don't live in the hood therefore I am not a hoodrat. Lol no buddy. I went anonymous because no one was answering my question and I didn't want anyone else to respond because I was done and didn't care about my project anymore which I don't have to explain to you but since you're soooo slow and convinced that I care what you and other strangers say, I'll still say it because you're getting on my freaking nerves thinking I ACTUALLY care about you.

I'm insecure? As I stated. I LOVE myself TOO much to care what some strangers say about me especially when they don't know me at all. Even if guys at my college wasn't trying to be my boyfriend, I'll STILL be as confident as I am.

Even though I think that isn't true but when you see, hear about racist creeps, can't expect a person to think other wise. See this is why I don't believe you when you said your parent's are doctors. As a black guy I've gotten to the point were I don't give a shit about Halloween anymore. I got pulled over cause I was speeding on the way to take an explosive shit and despite explaining myself as calmly as possible the police officer continuously assumed I was on drugs and proceeded to search my car. I would think that it was my weird behavior from the need to poop if this hadn't happened every single time I got pulled over. I don't do drugs and give off zero signs that I would. If some priveleged white kid's decided to rub brown shit on their face for a cheap laugh at a Halloween party I honestly don't give a shit. I've got real problems to focus on like incarceration rates, gentrification, and the dwindling population of black males in any professional position. Having people bring up Halloween as an actual problem that needs more attention is almost if not more infuriating then the costumes themself.

    Give me a break.

This is not racist, it's dressing up.

Unless their purposely acting like a fool in an attempt to portray a race as stupid or otherwise (like blackface) it's not even close to racist.

Also ignorance is not racist, some people get upset because a race is being misrepresented, but people dressing up are doing it for fun, not for a cultural art project. Some people need to get over themselves.

This article is on point for Halloween. You shouldn't be dressing up in offensively stereotypical ways like that. I am Irish, so every St. Patrick's day when I see people dressing up like leprechauns, getting hammered and saying those "Irish" phrases I feel like my own culture is being mocked.

Funny you should mention St. Patrick's day because another person at least claiming to be Irish said in these comments, "you don't see anyone complaining about SPD" over the very thing you listed. You'll always find people who don't care about something important or can't be bothered which merely adds to the reason these things continue on. This take wasn't about banning Halloween or telling people not to dress up, its about the specific people who dress up in offensively stereotypical ways and hide behind Halloween or a SPD to claim everything is cool b/c its Halloween as if its somehow magically not racist or not stereotypical one day of the year. Glad you understand it. Thanks for your comments.

they're just costumes complaining about them not being accurate is like complaining that taco bell isn't authentic mexican food it's not meant to be authentic or accurate it's just meant to be a costume most of the time a sexy costume and it doesn't mean they are racist or trying to say that your people no longer exist like in the picture where the girls have sombreros on im mexican and i'm not saying this is offensive this means they think we are like roman soldiers or vikings no i understand the humor in that and the kkk member one they have a sense of humor maybe in bad taste so it could offend you but just because you find something offensive doesn't mean you must change it and or call it racism just because i find a comedy show offensive (i wouldn't cause it's comedy) doesn't mean i then go and cancel the show #cancelcolbert social justice wariors are just too motivated and have no real cause to fight for

The people who are most likely to have a problem with this post or rush to call whine about being politically correct or dismiss you as hypersensitive are most likely white or people of color who are so far up the azzes of white folk that they pretend there's nothing wrong with this.

@ShaeNielson Sweetie, I'm not being "overly sensitive and easily butthurt" simply for being able to EMPATHIZE and CONSIDER OTHER PEOPLE'S FEELINGS outside of my own self-absorption. The problem with you and various many other white people, according to this post, is that you fail to empathize and be sensitive towards other people. You utterly fail to understand where people are coming from because you are self-centered at a disgusting level where you make everything all about you, your thoughts, your feelings, and your interpretation. You have managed to make this entire discussion about you and your realm of understanding. There's nothing lower than that. ;) Get over yourself.

Oddly enough, this isn't a consequence of deliberate racism... but of... globalism.

Globalism encourages world trade. World trade encourages outsourcing to other countries. Countries where locals just want to make a quick buck making your stuff for you and shipping it back.

Do you honestly think that the average Chinese factory worker gives two flying f*s about accuracy when making an "Indian" costume? It's not like they're disrespecting Chinese history. And if we don't complain to them, and keep buying the cheap crap because of the price, then they don't care if they get the bead arrangements all wrong.

If I want accuracy, I'll visit an actual reservation and ask for a tour. If I want to screw around, I'll go to the costume store, with cheap costumes made by lazy and apathetic designers.

Speaking of which, that's what's really at fault: laziness and apathy. Not racism.

Though a lot of times people want to look like the character and if that character has a different skin tone. You want to make yourself look more like them. Majority of the time they aren't trying to be racist. They are dressed like them because they think they are so awesome they want to look like them for Halloween.

The only people who claim that's not true are whiny social justice warriors with nothing better to do than to ruin Halloween.

Or we could embrace our cultural differences and just have a good time.

Would you rather force everyone to dress up like this?

Racism is not "a cultural difference." A cultural difference is you wear a head covering in your culture, and I don't. Racism isn't something to be celebrated. It would be intriguing however to embrace the morph suit. No one looks like anything in them. It's the ultimate anonymous and ambiguous costume.

Yes, it is the most perfectly ambiguous costume there is. That's the whole point of it, the entire episode was made to make fun of people who are easily offended.

This is what Halloween would become if we tried too hard to not offend anyone. Everything is offensive these days. Suck it up.

Social justice warrior get over it quit trying to be pc there is nothing wrong with it its just a costume and for one day that's the whole point of america to express your freedom if you don't want it go to middle east or africa lets see you how you would like it seeing the women being oppressed there or other people? Women in other countries are getting their genitals chopped off, raped, kids are being forced to marry and this is what you spend your time doing complaining about this?
