QuestionMan

Back to the Future on October 21, 2015

The movie series that inspired fascination with time travel for many, myself included has been in the news lately.

Why you may ask?

Because in Back to the Future 2, Marty McFly and Doctor Brown travelled to the future. October 21, 2015 to be exact.

But obviously there are some things that the movie got right and some things that it got wrong about 2015.

Here are some things that Back to the Future got right!

Video Calling

Back to the Future

Today we have Skype as well as other applications on our phones which allow us to make video calls. Not only that but we can also make conference calls to multiple people in different parts of the world.

Also if you noticed in the above picture that is a flat screen tv and they are everywhere nowadays. To some extent we can also watch multiple channels at once but I have no idea why people would do that.

Fingerprint identification

Back to the Future on October 21, 2015

Although it isn't as common as in the movie since it is already available. Fingerprint identification is now used on phones as a security feature instead of a password. In some rare cases it is used for transactions also.

Some people are even getting locks for their doors that read fingerprints but these are more expensive.

Holographic display/ 3D

Back to the Future on October 21, 2015

Who could forget the scene where the shark appears to eat Marty. The most famous hologram recently seen was of Tupac performing at Coachella. After that there was one of Michael Jackson.

As for 3D, we've had 3D movies for quite some time. A very famous movie that was made in 3D is Avatar by James Cameron.

Tablets

Back to the Future on October 21, 2015

The scene where a guy is asking Marty for a donation to help save the clock tower, he is holding a tablet.

Today we have a wide range of tablets some of which can also be a laptop.

Being consumed with personal electronics

Now they didn't get this exactly right since the technology used in the movie is different from what we use today the fact still remains. What they had in the movie seems like a mix between Oculus Rift and Google Glass neither of which is widespread for a number of reasons. Today we have a problem of always being on our phones and not paying attention to those around us. So I guess that is partially correct.

Flying cars

Another thing that is partially correct is flying cars. Although our cars don't fly like those from Back to the Future there are some cars that appear to be a type of hybrid between a car and a plane that cam fly although not too far.

Hoverboards

Again partially correct since they do exist but they are not main stream. It can only work on a certain surface.

There was a hoax video made about hoverboards and it's surprising how many people fell for it.

Here it is.

Talking to technology

In the movie Loraine talked to the machine to set the time for dehydrating the pizza. Although we do not have the technology to turn a small pizza into a large one, we already are able to communicate with our phones through services such as Siri and Google Voice.

A baseball team in Florida

The Florida Marlins, who happen to be Miami based, debuted in the MLB in 1993. And in 1998, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays became Florida's second baseball team.

And in case I missed anything or you tl;dr watch this video.
