The Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas Debate

CHARismatic110

Hi, my name is Char and I'm a Christian that prefers to say happy holidays as opposed to merry Christmas.

As you've probably heard or read in the news, there has been some controversy surrounding Christmas. Some Christians feel like people are purposely trying to take the CHRIST of Christmas. There's been the Starbucks cup debate, the spelling of Christmas (X-mas), and then the people that say happy holidays instead of merry Christmas. I personally thought that the cup debate was stupid. I've seen the previous cups and they were never really 100% about Christmas. They were more winter related than anything. As far as the spelling goes, I never understood how Christmas came to be abbreviated as X-mas in the first place. I've always spelled the word out and will continue to do so. But I'm also not bothered by people who don't. Which brings us to the happy holidays vs. Merry Christmas debate.

Here's why I prefer to say happy holidays:

December is a month where SEVERAL holidays take place, not just Christmas!

Were you looking for something deeper? Sorry to disappoint. It isn't because I'm ashamed. It isn't because I don't want to offend others. It's because there are multiple holidays during this month. Hanukkah and Kwanzaa get the short end of the stick year after year and nobody really talks about it. I say happy holidays because I want to include them all. Even if someone says Merry Christmas to me, I always respond with "Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you too". I think a lot of times people make mountains out of molehills, Christians included. We tend to think everyone is against us. Most people (again, Christians included) don't even celebrate and recognize the reason for Christmas. It's not about presents or decorations or candy canes. It's about the birth of Jesus. But that gets swept under the rug most of the time.

I say all of that to say this: let's stop trying to crucify people for such small things. Unless someone is blatantly being disrespectful about not wanting to say Christmas because of Christ, then why make a big deal out of it? Saying happy holidays is way to include all of the different holidays that are in the month of December. I include New Years with my happy holidays as well. Does that make me less of a Christian? Nope. And for those that don't believe, that's fine. This isn't a debate about whether or not you believe and if there is a God or anything. So if those are your intentions for commenting just know that I more than likely will NOT respond. Thanks.

As always, stay classy GaGers. See you guys on the threads! โœŒ โค ๐Ÿ˜Ž
