7 Chakras, 7 Deadly Sins

7 Chakras, 7 Deadly Sins

I happened to notice that there are an equal number of deadly sins as chakras, so I thought it would be an interesting exercise to try to match them up to the chakras.

In case you don’t know what the 7 deadly sins are I’ll list them out. They are: gluttony, lust, greed, envy, pride, wrath, and sloth.

Here are the seven chakras and their corresponding issues:

Now I’ll try to match the sins to the chakras.

Gluttony

I would primarily relate this one with an excessive muladhara chakra. If you lack stability and prosperity in life then food provides a means of grounding oneself.

Alternately, gluttony may originate from the anahata chakra. At an early age we relate food with love. When the mother is loving, food (or her breast milk) is given freely. When the mother is angry, then food may be held back. This could also happen if the mother lacks the means to provide food for her children (i.e. a deficient first chakra). If you haven’t received much love in your life then you may use food as a substitute.

Or, gluttony could be related to the svadhisthana chakra if excessive eating is used to make up for a lack of pleasure in one’s life.

Lust

This one can easily be related to an excessive svadhisthana chakra when you have poorly defined boundaries and little discretion with regards to sexuality.

If lust isn’t taken in a sexual way, and is considered as a driving lust for power, then it could be related to an excessive manipura chakra.

Greed

I would relate this one to an excessive first chakra. If you’re materialistic and obsessed with prosperity (ex: money) then you may feel the need to hoard your possessions rather than share them.

Alternately, greed could originate from a deficient fourth chakra. Love is about giving and receiving. Having received very little from others could make one reluctant to share what they have. Ironically, those that are greedy may have less than those who are willing to share and help out, especially if you include the non-material things in life (ex: companionship, health, happiness, spirituality).

Envy

I would relate this one to the ajna chakra. Having distorted perceptions of yourself and others can make one envious.

But perhaps envy is more related to an excessive anahata chakra, especially when it comes to relationships. Interestingly, this chakra is associated with the colour green, the same colour that is associated with envy (as in the expression “to be green with envy”).

Pride

This one could be related to the manipura, vishuddha, and/or sahasrara chakras.

With an excessive manipura chakra, one may feel overly proud of their power and status. This may exhibit itself in bullying which could be due to physical or intellectual prowess. Yes, there are intellectual bullies too, who use their intelligence to upshow others and make them feel bad.

Pride may also be displayed through the vishuddha chakra when one is being boastful and arrogant.

The sahasrara chakra is related to transcendence so you may be surprised that I’m linking it to pride. I’ll use an example to explain: dogmatic religious leaders may feel overly proud of their religion and consider it superior to other religions. They may even consider themselves superior to: those who are less devout, others of different faiths, or those who don’t believe (i.e. atheists). So pride can be found even in spiritual disciplines. When you lose awareness, you lose humility, and pride seeps in. Some people may feel they have a right to be proud but never forget what you and others had to do to get you to where you are.

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” - Sir Isaac Newton

Wrath

This one can easily be related to an excessive third chakra when one is overly aggressive, is arrogant, has temper tantrums, has violent outbursts, and/or is hyperactive. It can also be linked to the vishuddha chakra if one expresses their wrath through what they say (i.e. verbal abuse).

Sloth

This can be related to a deficient manipura chakra. It can also be related to a deficient fifth chakra if one is lazy with their speech (ex: not saying what they mean, not giving enough details, refusing to speak up). Alternately, it could be attributed to an excessive first chakra if one is too attached to their security and afraid of change.

To summarize:

7 Chakras, 7 Deadly Sins

It can be seen that most of the seven deadly sins can be related to the lower 4 chakras which have more to do with the physical realm of things. Another observation is that the manipura chakra can be related to 4 of the 7 deadly sins.

So, how do you think I did? Would you have matched up the chakras and the deadly sins differently?
