The Value of Kindness

The Value of Kindness

You don’t need to cure cancer or end poverty or eliminate all racism from the world to make it a better place. When we’re young, we tend to have big ideas and big dreams about what we can achieve and all the good we’re going to do in the world, but as our slow descent into adulthood presses on, reality starts to set in and sometimes it can make us cynical or jaded. Where we once believed we could single-handedly solve one of the world’s great problems, we now see our dreams as futile and the very real challenges insurmountable. It’s hard to grow up and to exchange your youthful idealism for grown-up skepticism. But it doesn’t mean we have to stop caring, or become completely cynical about it. The world doesn’t change because of one individual doing one big thing, it changes because of millions of people doing millions of little things each and every day. Kindness is easy and while it might not rid the world of starvation, every little bit of it goes a long way toward making this world a happy, healthy and respectful home for all of us.

The Value of Kindness

There always have been and likely always will be hateful people in this world, but there are far more decent people who are trying their best. Even those that we label as hateful are often just scared or bitter or hurting. When those people are treated with kindness, they can change. It doesn’t happen overnight or with one little smile, but every act of kindness, every attempt to understand them, chips away at their fear and their bitterness and their pain. We can ALL be part of that process.

I firmly believe that the world we see is a reflection of who we are. What is the saying? “If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you’re the asshole”.

If you are a kind, generous, positive person you’ll tend to notice the other kind, generous, positive people and events around you. Another great quote that comes to mind comes from everyone’s best friend, Mr. Rogers:

The Value of Kindness

The more kind, generous and positive people we have in the world who choose to view the world as a good place, and other people as valuable, the better the whole world becomes for everyone.
