Last year, I got out of an abusive relationship. My ex would hit me, rape me, and emotionally abuse me. His male friends would text me saying I was dumb to be leaving him, that he was a good guy. When I sent them proof that I had been abused by him, they said that I was lying. When I told my mom, she didn't believe me. When I talked to a lawyer, she said that I didn't have enough evidence against him to win the case.

And now a rapist and abuser is out there, with no punishment.

I see here that many people don't seem to understand what feminism is, due to the rise of femism (aka feminazis). It's really not about hating on men or being superior, if you truly are a feminist. Here are some topics for you to think about

Feminist women want to be treated equally and not superior to men

Are all muslims terrorists? Are all Trump voters white supremacists? We see those topics very often and we understand that those are wrong affirmations. In fact, in every single political movement, religion, or whatever you want to call it, there will be extremes that are harmful and aggressive - and that does not mean they represent the whole movement.

What I'm trying to say is that the video on youtube you watched last week "feminist/sjw cringe compilation" doesn't represent AT ALL the feminist movement. In fact, those people were recorded specifically because of how ridiculous their speech is.

The definition of feminism is "the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes". The idea is just to be respected, be treated equally and have the same rights as men. When you say "she says she's a feminist but still wants men to pay the bills/buy her dinner", the only thing that I can tell you is that she is not a true feminist and that there's nothing to do about it. It is not my fault that she's not faithful to her so called political belief.

Feminism has led women to earn their write to vote and to control their body thanks to birth control. However, all those conquers lead people to believe that "we don't need feminism anymore", which is an extremely wrongful affirmation.

Why we still need feminism

I live in Brazil.

August 27th 2017, a woman was tied down and raped by two men. She was eating pizza with her fiance. Her clothes were completely ripped, she was raped for hours, and then left alone in a vacant lot. The rapists were identified but haven't been arrested.

August 28th 2017, an 18 year old woman was ran over by a car when she was heading home. The driver offered to take her to the hospital. He actually took her to a garage and raped her. The rapist was identified but hasn't been arrested.

August 29th 2017, a 38 year old writer was raped in an Uber on the way home after a party. She had also been raped when she was 13 years old. The rapist doesn't work for Uber anymore, but hasn't been arrested.

August 30th 2017, a man ejaculated on a woman's neck on a bus, when she was on the way back to work. The man had attempted rape in other women 5 times before, and all 5 times were reported to the police. He hasn't been arrested so far.

Every 98 seconds, an American is assaulted. On average, in the U.S., there are 321,500 victims of sexual assault a year. 9 out of 10 times, the victim is a woman.

We need feminism because women deserve respect.

Conclusion

Us true feminists don't want any power over men. We want equality and respect, and that has been achieved economically, politically etc. We don't need to fight more in those categories - the gender pay gap is a myth, us women have conquered what we deserved in that area and we do earn the same as men for the same exact job.

However, there is still a huge problem that doesn't lie on women's income and political rights. Women's inequality is in their position in our current society. Even though there was so much progress, we're still disrespected on our everyday life, we're still reduced to our bodies, and still violated so many of us are violated each year. That's why we need to empower young girls and teach young boys to view women as equals, so one day that immense disrespect won't be a problem in our society anymore.

I'm a feminist, and proud of it! It's unfortunate that anti feminists purposefully choose to only acknowledge the crazy people who do insane shit. We have an SJW problem in the US right now, and all of this partly a reaction to that. We have extremists trying to convince the government to do things it shouldn't do. And that shit is counter productive to real social progress and real feminism. In addition to this, those people are a minority. They are a small group who cause a lot of trouble and it sucks.

My advice to you OP and other feminists is not to try and convince the anti feminists to see your side. I say, call out the extremists, educate them as well because they are often very misinformed. Those ones are the ones hurting the cause, not the anti feminists. They are the opposite side of the coin that keeps things balanced even though it sucks to admit it. We need them so shit doesn't go crazy. And when some nutcase racist as fuck people come out you have the left going ham, calling all conservatives racist when it's just a minority. And conservatives should be shitting on those guys. But alas they don, t and feminist and the left don't shit on our extremists either. Instead things just keep escalating.

There was birth control before feminism. What does Feminism have to do with rape? People commit crimes every single day because they are bad people (men&women) we all know rape, assault, stealing lying is wrong and yet people do it everyday. Feminism isn't going to stop this, because rapist don't care.
The vast majority of people are actually good people who don't commit crimes. It has always been like this and would continue to be that way in the future. It's good that you don't believe in stupid myths like the gender wage gap, unfortunately the majority of feminists do and it's turned 3rd wave feminism into an embarrassing mess that no one takes seriously anymore. it has taken a long time but the tide is turning in no small part because a lot of the members are so obviously extremists and completely insane.

The problem that feminism has is that there's no self regulation, there's no part of the movement that have a rational voice and stop the entire movement going too far, everyone is caught up in sisterhood and dragging the patriarchy down. So feminist scholars publish work about this stuff and they go completely unchallenged in the literature. You know if someone publishes bad science then plenty of scientists step up and publish peer review on why the science is bad, and the discipline self regulates.

Right now feminism has no one doing that, there's maybe a handful of scholars who have alternative voices, people like Christina Hoff Sommers and Janice Fiamengo, and guess what happens when they try and talk somewhere? They're interrupted by feminists pulling fire alarms to shut them down or clanging stuff and blowing air horns so talks cannot take place. There's not a single shred of honest in these people, they want to use power to shut down speech instead of honest debate the issues.

Saying you're a "true" feminist no longer means anything, because no true feminists have protect their name by doing the leg work to rally against the extremists, and now the animals are running the zoo. So everything gets thrown out, the whole lot, because it's corrupt from the very core.

As for your conlcusion. Men and women are disrespected, and violent crimes happen all the time to both men and women, it's not a "womens rights" issue, it's a "some humans are bad" issue which isn't going to go away any time soon. This whole "teach men to respect women and not rape" is completely ludicrous. Young boys and men in general don't view other men as equals much less women, it's completely bananas.

No one automatically deserves respect, not men, not women, respect is earned through your actions and judgement of your character. And the fact that we have to read rubbish like "women deserve respect" which completely ignores the rest of humanity is part of why no one takes feminism seriously.

Was a few months after a break up. Ex hears I’ve finally brought someone else home. She enters my house and comes up to my room. Rooms locked so she proceeds to go grab a hammer. I suppose she was being quiet as to bust me in the act. She (this little 4’9″) thing stars knocking down my bedroom door with a hammer. I was in shock till I saw the middle of the door fall out. Then I jumped up and opened the door. After taking a few blows from the hammer I disarmed her and quickly let my guest out of probably one of the most awkward and terrifying hook up of her life. Just because the definition of a movement says one thing, doesn't mean the members of that movement do what the definition says. Feminism's definition may say it's for equality, but reality says something completely different.

As a humanist, and through the pepole iv known and having listened to a range of points of view and read a lot Im aware of issues both men and women face in society legally and in terms of support during tough times.

And it sounds like you support trying to tackle all issues as well even if we may not exactly share perspectives on everything.

I don't want women talked down to or reduced to your body's just because there women I know you have a lot to offer and we need all minds working together effectively to progress effectively and everyone should be able to feel secure.

What does rape have to do with the need for advancing womens' rights? No one in society agrees with making women legal to rape. Why don't feminists fight for the inequality in colleges? Women are going to college at a gender ratio of 60-40. Secondly, there has been research done that male students with equal grades to their girl counterpart get lower grades. Why? Because of the gender bias of the female teacher. Just because the boy acts rebellious, doesn't mean you can grade him lower for doing the same thing, but it's happening.

I'd like to add to that point that schools have been helping women with support groups for decades as well, while men get no help whatsoever, even though women have been outperforming men since the 70's. I think feminists had 40 years to help boys out, but they never deemed it a problem.

Ultimately feminism has served its purpose in the west. It's time to let the ship sink. I'd be all for an egalitarian movement that has a 50-50 gender quota within its party to help both men and women equally. Now that would be the true movement of equality. Yep, and it is just more of the same dishonesty we hear and read from feminists all the time. But actions speak louder than words, and the actions of feminism on the whole over the last 2 decades or more have been deplorable. The results of feminist actions during that period have been overwhelmingly negative.

If you actually care about the welfare of everyone and not just females, if you want to see sexism and gender hatred reduced, and if you want to see respect for women strengthened rather than undermined, then supporting feminism is about the dumbest thing you could possibly do.
