Intuition is a gut feeling we all have. Or, at least I'd like to think we all have it. I'm pretty sure some people have grown so accustomed to disregard it it's gone too rusty on them - ready to break and be forgotten forever.
But it's never too late - if you truly feel something is wrong then trust that feeling because it's right.
This story I'm about to tell you might sound inconsequential...but...it feels really important to tell, even if it is just for the sake of exemplifying the power of intuition in an everyday person such as myself.

About a year ago I was walking home from a dinner and some drinks with my friends uptown. It was a longer walk, but I didn't mind - especially since I love a cool breeze against my skin - it just felt refreshing and like a perfect opportunity to get some alone time to clear my head (I need to do this in general even if no particular problems are bothering me at the moment).
Since it was around 23:00h, people walking, such as myself, were few and far between. Everyone else can usually be found either at home or in some kind of a club at that time of night.
I kept walking trying not to think about anything for a change when I suddenly felt some strangely tight sensation in my chest and throat and didn't want to turn right - even though I should have because it was the fastest way to my house.
I didn't even deliberate the feeling, I simply kept on walking straight and made a left turn, prolonging my walk for an additional 10 minutes.
I arrived safely home and went to bed.
The next morning I read the online newspapers, as I do every morning, and to my surprise two women were attacked in the alley I was supposed to turn on that very same night! They were attacked on separate occasions - different times, but both on the same night.
The conclusion of the journalist and the local police was that the assailant was waiting for his victims hiding in the crevices of the alley.
Luckily, the man attacking these women couldn't do too much harm since the first woman ran away after being hit once and the second one, being well versed in the martial arts (taekwondo) defended herself and the assailant ran away.
The second woman even identified the person that attacked her, but the police wasn't able to catch him. Only thing they put out there was that there were similar complaints and reports of a man of a similar stature and MO.
I can honestly say I'm happy and grateful for my gift - a gift all humans posses - it's up to you whether you want to use it or not.
Intuition: Trust it Because it Might Just Save Your Life Someday
Here are three ways to listen to that internal voice and allow its guidance into your everyday life:
1 - Keep a journal. Writing your thoughts and feelings down on paper—even if you "think" you have little to say—helps the nonconscious mind open up. You may find you're writing words and phrases that don't make sense to you, or stir emotional responses rather than intellectual responses. When this happens, it leads to:
2 - Turn off Your Inner Critic. Often times we rationalize away those voices within. This time, listen without judgment. Allow the inner dialogues to happen without fear or ridicule.
3 - Find a Solitary Place. A place where you can allow emotions to flow freely is an imperative part of finding and retaining the building blocks of intuition. Here you may also want to create an emotional connection to an object, a color, a piece of music or literature - anything that will allow feelings to stir that are solely from within and do not carry intellectual or rational reasoning.
These three exercises will aid you in creating a new, deeper relationship with the self, help clarify that inner voice, and allow you to bring your true instinctual awareness back into your rational everyday life.
Confirmation bias and everything aside intuition is a bad thing to go against. We only consciously pick up on so many cues but subconsciously we process a lot more and that is where we get that vibe from.
How well I know that. I was going somewhere on a trip, and as soon as I had it scheduled I started having a deep dread of the trip, like this thought that it literally was going to ruin my life. The feeling continued up to the day of departure, and even though I could have cancelled, I went ahead and went anyway. Well, it led to one of the worst experiences of my life and seriously sidetracked my career and financial and personal life.
When I read the part about not going through that alley I had to think about the simple but wise expression "if it doesn't feel right, it isn't right!". You have an intuition to build a house on Sally! It will even tell you when there's a problem with the foundations :D
I read an article a long time ago suggesting the same thing but they called it trusting your fear. Say if a woman is riding an elevator alone, a strange man gets in at some point, if that woman is nervous or fearful around the man she should trust her fear and get off the elevator. Trust your fears to keep yourself safe.
Excellent Take, very intriguing, I wish I had more intuition and less rational thinking, it would have been probably so much better for me, because I often tend to overthink things.
Intuition is a feeling you get about something... It's also called 'gut feeling' not for nothing because you can literally feel a feeling of dread in your gut if there's something wrong with a person or a place... Just listen to what your body is telling you - and don't disregard it. I'm not an expert... so maybe you can explore it more online...
