Net neutrality is something that all of us have had, but few knew about. Today the FCC has voted to repeal (take away) net neutrality, with a vote of 3 to 2. The fight isn't over yet, though. They still has to go through the Supreme Court, if they choose to take the case. But what is net neutrality, and why is this such a big deal?

In simpler terms, net neutrality is the principle that your internet connection must treat all websites and web Based Services the same. This means that you don't have to pay different amounts to access certain sites or services. It also means that those companies providing services don't have to pay for their sites to be accessible.

Without net neutrality, not only will we have to pay for each site we'd like to access, but companies have to pay to keep their sites running quickly and efficiently. This will most definitely result in a monopolisation of websites. For example, Netflix may run very quickly, but other video streaming services will run very slowly. Because of this, more people would be using Netflix than any other video streaming service.

If we lose net neutrality, everyone online will definitely notice it. It means no more free access to whatever we need to find online. Our favorite sites may no longer be accessible. Our social media accounts may be lost because we cannot afford to pay so much money just to open the website. We need net neutrality.

And my stance on neutrality: It won't affect me because I'm not US citizen. But definitely it won't affect bigger websites like Facebook and Instagram as it'll be in basic plans of ISP. Regarding the effect on G@G, they can't block access to specific website but rather they'll provide slow band width. Gag does not require high speed internet connection as you can use it with speed of 100kbps - 200kbps

There is such an amazing amount of ignorance and misinformation about this subject. Doesn't anyone bother to actually research it? People need to stop repeating rumors and bullshit that they hear on the Internet. There are two sides to this issue, but people only listen to the side that uses scare tactics and doomsday predictions to influence public opinion toward their side. There is no evidence that those things will come to pass.

People act like there are no other laws in place. The law won't allow most of these doomsday predictions and that hasn't changed.

No wonder the FCC and Congress just ignore the emails they get on this. If people are going to write them, at least try to know something about the subject.

Lol I wrote down what I read, which was looked up online and verified by several sources. It is possible that things will change online for the worst when the law is repealed. This is an idea for people who haven't bothered to look it up at all and don't plan on it, so they can see why they should be bothering to look it up. Of course you'd use a scare tactic to convince people to actually research a topic when there are so many people too lazy to do it.

I don't know what your sources are, but they are seriously misleading you, which is their intent. You are being used as a dupe by repeating what you are being told to repeat.

At least you used the word "possible" rather than stating what will happen like in your original post. But you don't even know if it is possible. It's not like this is the whole of laws and regulations. It's nothing more than one little pebble out of a mountain, with the rest of the mountain remaining in place. It does not give the ISPs free rein.

People keep throwing around "net neutrality" without knowing enough about it to know which side is better or worse for "net neutrality". What makes you think this recent ruling harms net neutrality? Not everyone agrees with that, including people who know a hell of a lot more about it than either of us do. In other words, if you want net neutrality, how do you even know which side to take?

Net neutrality is just a concept.
The only thing they repealed is the incredibly restrictive and completely unnecessary legislation that was put into place in 2015 as a heavy handed measure to allegedly uphold net neutrality in the US.

You noticed "not having net neutrality" for the 30 years prior to 2015?
That so called "blocking of websites" and paying for each site you want to access?
I'd bet you didn't, because it didn't really happen.
Those who will be deemed as violating consumer rights will be dealt with on a case by case basis as they were until now, repealing the legislation isn't going to change that.

They repealed internet connection being considered a public service, as they rightfully should.
Internet isn't a basic utility and it should never be subject to government regulation in spirit of proper free market economy.
