My native language isn't much better. We have female versions we use in spoken language but aren't official words.
Like, we don't have a female world for principal and things like that. Officially spoken.
I think the connotation of some words plays a part here too. If we don't see "principal" as a "male word", I think we can take a huge step forward as a society.
Not ever going to happen. Regardless of what the FI keeps telling you. Things are never, will never, and have not ever, been equal. This is a fallacy perpetuated by the feminist movement. Men and women are different - they just never will be the same.
@AD240pCharlie and @soulbabe: look up the dictionary, there is no Fuckboy or fuck boy. Moreover it isn't a degragatory term for a promiscious man as the term 'slut'
@soulbabe No. In my language there is equal terms for promiscious man and woman. It's not that men don't care. If I used that term to them, they would be deeply offended. It's just the term 'slut' is degrading only for wome, and when used for man it is used as an insult, like asshole. So it doesn't have the same punch.
You're not wrong but there are other problems for the male side. There is no female version of "man-up" that tends to be used when talking about very sensitive subjects (like female on male abuse). “sissy” tends to be male only as well.
There are equivalents, that are used in the same way, just not a direct copy and paste. Of course, slang also fills this gap in. That’s important because language isn’t a static thing. It evolves.
I still think thair is better things to worry about than English is racist for insistence cancer, people in distress after a disaster, people trying to blow us up, the abuse at public schools that push to a braking point making school shooting, people being aboused by. Thair mother farther grand parents or aunt's. Uncals wives or husbands, the General education of people today, the fact thair people who came to this country to be a US citizen who disrespect the flag or talk smack about our country (then why the fuck you here) , people from the US disrespecting the flag " stand up you spoiled brat the flag is a symbol and deserves respect people died to give you freedom so you should at least show your thankful for it " , the pollution going on, animal cruelty, bigger problems than English is sexist
@soulbabe Yeah! who cares about what your country goes through? do you think the world revolves around USA? Discussing different matters doesn't devalue the one we are talking about it.
Why should I care about what USA goes through, when in itself brings doom to other coutries? you want to discuss about your country, dicuss it elsewhere with your people. I don't care, and I don't want to hear about it.
I say US because I'm from the US don't tell me that the same shit dosnt happen thair I garente that people in your country do the same shit I know thairs people being killed or abused all over the world and I think all Cutler she take pride in thair home land but I also think if you Change your citizen ship you should show the same respect as you do your previous country
I'm sorry I didn't say US the entire time I used once. And said other countries have the same problems don't try and tell me, cancer, abuse, terrorism, pollution, and what not I did not say come to the US I said if you change your citizenship to any country you should make damn sure you treat it as if your home so if I moved to England or Africa I would pledge my alliance to that country not consistently diss it while living thair
The direct male equivalent of "slut" is "slodder" or "slummock". People just don't use them nowadays. But, if it will make women "feel better" then they should bring it back into favour and make it popular like it was prior to 1860.
Ok I'm done now because the best you can do is redirect to a made up comment I never once said you couldn't I said it's stupid just like no body said I couldn't run off a 8 story building with feathers strapped to my ass screaming I can fly but it's still stupid.
It doesn't offend me, but that doesn't stop it being sexist. It is how it is, amd that's not any particular persons fault, but it should still be changed.
Have you ever studied Spanish or Portuguese? If you think the English language is sexist then it's a BB gun compared to a machine gun when it comes to the Latin linguistics.
Seriously though, you need to STOP. Western women have it better now then women have had it in ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY! And yet you are STILL looking for things to complain about.
You are inviting a very dangerous backlash with this marxist mentality. The 2016 US election should have been a big sign of that, but most of you still don't get it. You can only pull the rubber band so far in one direction before it snaps back or breaks.
No, but that doesn't matter. "This language is less sexist than this other language" isn't relevant, because it doesn't change that the first language is still sexist. Same for the "you have it better now" argument. They're shitty arguments based on relativism that can be applied to nearabouts every political cause ever, and which don't actually hold much water logically.
Well I'll give you one big fact if you want to discuss logic: Donald Trump won the presidency in 2016 DESPITE EVERY POLL PREDICTING OTHERWISE. People like you are creating an environment where people like him can THRIVE.
I don't even like him, but he along with other crazies are going to keep rising to power the more people like you try to argue insane viewpoints that our language is "sexist".
YES I want women to be successful, safe and happy. But I'm sure as hell not going support Marxism. Trying to manipulate our native language is exactly that.
Ya because the electoral college system is fucked. But what does that actually matter anyways? Currently, he has 1st year approval ratings that are a record low for any US president. So if complaining about him "gives him more power", how did that happen?
Hon, our native language has always been manipulated, and doing so sure as fuck ain't marxism. Can you even explain what you mean by that? Linguistic change is a natural feature of language, how is trying to guide it in one direction or another such a bad thing? Other languages have full on national academies meant to keep the language "pure" or "proper" (looking at you, France), how is trying to accomplish linguistic change on a less institutional level so terrible?
Because what you are arguing for sounds like gender "plurality". You want us to start using "ze goes there" instead of "he goes there" or "she goes there". Or maybe you want a role reversal where the entire language feminized? I was a finance major and I remember my college textbooks purposely doing pronoun shifts saying "she invests this much in this stock.. blah, blah, blah". The subject matter was difficult enough study, but when they threw in their social justice bullshit to make things even harder.
There is a reason for polarization of the sexes. It has to with balance and making opposites attract. Opposites attract to create LIFE and for harmonic balance in the environment. You see this in wildlife and the fact it exists with humans is no coincidence. The vast majority of women are NOT attracted to feminine men and the vast majority of men are NOT attracted to masculine women.
Trying to manipulate our native language is really showing an underlying agenda
and YES I don't like or even support Donald Trump. I think he is out of his mind. But this aggressive, insane ideology for the left that argues that are very language is sexist is pushing moderate people like myself in the other direction.
Did you actually read the take? Because it sure seems like you just read the title and then decided to comment without actually knowing what I was writing about. Firstly, I'm not advocating for new pronouns, only against "he/him" as a generic and for "they/them" in that situation instead. This isn't about polarization, it's about inequality. Having distinct terms for male and female counterparts would be fine (ish), but the fact is that in English, those distinct terms just aren't equal. Governor/governess, master/mistress, sir/madam. The female forms all have different and socially inferior connotations. How exactly can you deny the inequality there?
I have no problem with American society or at least in turms of equality I can vote, go whare I please, dress how I want, have any job I want, hell I could try and be president if I wanted "I don't no thanks " , I'm not forced into marriage I can get in a blood soaked fight if I please so I have no reason to complain I mean hell if I went into engineering I'd make more money than any man with the same training that hardly seems fair and my bloody car insurance cost less than a boys till he's like 20 something so I have no reason to bitch and call a guy sexist because he called human kind man I mean it's legit it the name HU-MAN it's basically like saying" lol or brb tyl" so I'm not going to bitch just like I'm not going to snap at someone for holding a door open
They do change all the time but this shouldn't be done by the impetus of a special interest group, especially radical feminism!
You should of made this take into a poll on whether or not we should change our "sexist" English language. But I highly doubt you would like the results you would get.
How is making language equal "radical", or "feminism" (as I assume you're not defining feminism as a movement for equality)? And language already is shaped by special interest groups, just more vague and less well defined ones- the upper social class today and historically, aka mostly rich white men.
Not wrapped up in my own just to busy laughing in my mind at how stupid the pregnant girls at public homeschools "o yay I'm having a baby and he's going to stay with me forever and the baby will obviously be easy " um no hun he's going to put up with it maybe 2 months and leave your ass then your going to give the baby to your mother to take care of except when you show it off like a accessorie. But normal people don't give a shit about rather English is sexist besides I can't poke fun if words like slut sissy pussy manly man kind didn't exist. Not like it will kill you if it's called MAN kind
Oh fuck of with your "sexism" you imagine in every pebble.

Funny how now that women have the equality and in some cases preferential treatment they want, they complain about the most minute things that aren't sexist at all. Seriously? People like you complain about air conditioning and string cheese wrappers and now language is sexist? Give me a break. Please stop complaining about things that aren't really sexist. In cases of true sexism for no reason other than hatred of men or women, we can all fight it together.
Ah yes, everything is sexist. Because otherwise women wouldn't be oppressed and they wouldn't be able to demand free stuff from the government. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no.

English speakers don't have malicious intent. None of us created this language. It's been centuries. I don't think this matters anymore.
How does using male and female terms that are actually equivalent softer? How is not using male generics softer, or hiding? How does any of this make language say less? Explain.
Does anyone really have their own words. I'm using the same ones everyone else is using. Similar ideas and thoughts are usually differed to those we think can get them across better with "their" words. I'm personally against changing language because if you control language, however bad or good, you control thought.
You want to drop some words in favor equality or maybe mash them together in some form text talk but does it really help convey specific thoughts or context. Using pronouns like "They/Them" hides the reality of what someone is trying to convey. "Have you seen them?" replacing "Him/Her" is counterproductive. "They look like that one person from that movie." Which movie, what gender, why can't you just say what you mean? "You know that person with the long brown hair and blue eyes. The one with small hands and feet." Talking in your ideal language would be as dry and emotionless as legalese adding hours of gibberish without saying much. As if Humans don't do that already.
Language is already controlled. The fact that the control is exerted by tradition and a biased societal structure doesn't make it any less controlling than control intentionally exerted. In fact I think intentional and conscious control could be better because it at least allows us to control and to acknowledge what specific biases are being created in the language.
And I'm not talking about replacing all pronouns with they/them, onky the generic/unknown ones. I said as much in the take, did you read it?
"What Can We Do About it? Aim for more gender-neutral speech. Simply use “they/them”, or at the very least “he or she” IF YOU MUST (though I find this incredibly clunky and unnecessary, and suspect its usage will be shrinking as time goes on)."---Did you read what you wrote?
"In fact I think intentional and conscious control could be better because it at least allows us to control"---Again you're pushing for more control of a language that you yourself said was already controlled by making it softer so everyone can feel better about themselves. Feeling better about using a language Will Not make people feel better about themselves. That starts and ends with them.
I did, you just skimmed over it. "Talking in your ideal language would be as dry and emotionless as legalese adding hours of gibberish without saying much. Feeling better about using a language Will Not make people feel better about themselves." =Softer words so no one gets hurt.
How about we don't play into the NWO propaganda of eliminating gender differences and we all just stay SANE here would that be cool? Fire person... you know why they are called firemen? Because it's a man's job. Get as mad about that as you want, I'd rather have a man pulling me out of a burning building than a women 99% of the time
I'm only advocating eliminating gender differences in language and even then only in specific situations. But if you're so entrenched in archaic thinking that you're still calling things "men's jobs", I see why you'd be unable to comprehend my argument.
I can comprehend it well, better than you can, and you're the one who made it lol! You are young so you get a little bit of a pass, you've been brainwashed to think this from the cradle so it's not really fair that you have such a shitty understanding in this department, the game was rigged from the start. There is an agenda to make women into men and men into women, to eliminate the differences between the sexes, and this agenda manifests in many forms, one of them is gender neutral language. You can call my thinking archaic, in a sense it is, but in this department we need to get back to our roots, not be 'progressive' because we are progressing in the wrong direction. A man's job is a man's job for a fking reason, like I said, I don't want a woman pulling me out of a burning building, I want the person to be as strong as possible, and 99% of the time that is a man. You think that is sexist? You're damn right it is and there is nothing wrong with that. I discriminate and that's fine
You believe that your comprehension of it is better than mine, sure. But that's just because you're so in love with your strawman you're unable to see it's made of straw.
And how exactly, pray tell, can women be made into men? How is that possible, as far as gender is concerned? Are you admitting that gender is social and changeable? Because that doesn't seem like it ought to fit your agenda.
don't take my words too literally. Women are traditionally more right brained, men are more left brained. The agenda is to make women more left brained and men more right brained. No matter how many body parts people lop off they will never change from women to men or otherwise, we are what we are born as. Let's take a step back and get basic. I don't like to make changes unless there is a good reason for it, otherwise it's just a waste of time and it's better to stick with what's tried and true. Why would we eliminate gender differences from language, what tangible benefit would it have? I want something real, not the lame argument of 'well peoples feelings myah myah myah' I don't give a fk, language is designed to work to describe things, and if people know what words mean and can communicate using them it need not be changed.
Fun fact: our brains adapt to how they're used. Aka differences in how men and womens brains tend to function can be ascribed to nurture, not nature. It might be nature to some degree, sure, but we can't know that. And how exactly are people trying to force these changes to happen? Allowing people to behave outside of their prescribed gender roles isn't forcing them into anything, quite the opposite in fact.
As for what tangible benefit it would have, I addressed that in the take. Can you read?
okay, so your fun fact, let's take that nurture argument and lay it over THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF EVOLUTION. If your previous thousand incarnations were 'nurtured' in a specific way, do you not think that effect is greater than what you can do in one puny lifetime? FUN FACT!!! THOSE THOUSANDS OF YEARS ARE WORTH A LOT MORE!!! Allowing people to behave how they want is fine, I've never argued we shouldn't, but there is a massive propaganda train pushing culture this way, if you can't see it you are blind. Blind. Completely and utterly incapable of seeing. Government schooling and media are pushing this so hard it's not even funny. Why was my 11 year old self told that 1 in 10 kids is gay and that at least 2 or 3 people in my class is gay? Take a moment to understand how this fucks with a young person's mind. Please re address the tangible benefit this has because something tells me that me and you have a different idea of what constitutes a 'benefit'
Yikes, you didn't even read as far as the second sentence? "By that I don’t mean that the language itself was consciously created to favor men over women, or that any particular individual or group is responsible for this"
I apologise, what I meant was the will to either read the take seriously or read it without preconceptions of what the title may entail. Yes the title inspires interest in that people are willing to put forward their opinions, but I've my reservations that some are... less than thrilled about it. Regardless, it is interesting in what the people think here.
@Nivinxus I'm aware the title is controversial, it's intended to be. Yes, that results in more people giving knee jerk reactions to it without reading, but it also results in more people actually reading it. So I chose the option that results in more people reading but also more idiots commenting, and that's fine by me.
English is already changing, and has changed significantly over time. So sorry honeybunch, but this kind of change is already happening, I'm just helping it along.
It is changing. Again, "child" used to be a feminine term, but is no longer. This change can and does happen. So really, why are you lying to yourself?
it won't change , maybe add a word here or there but if you're actually waiting for a language to change to fit your self esteem, you will wait thousands of years, even if it ever changes it won't be in your lifetime nor in your grandchildren lifetimes either, so stop trying to build a self esteem when you have Zero. you are really that desperate for attention the only thing you could come up with is "englisih is oppressing me" damn, no wonder guys are pumping and dumping , the girls these days are pretty much insane and better to just use them for quick fun .
It already is changing. "They/them" is becoming increasingly common as a gender neutral term. Words like "actor" and "waiter" are becoming the primary words for those professions, with words like "actress" and "waitress" dying out. Sorry hon, your personal views just don't change reality, no matter how hard you try to believe they do.
lol damn you live in a fantasy word, non of these words are used like that, waitress is still being used by 99% of people so is actress, you're just lying to yourself at this point pretending you're actually making a difference, no one evne gives a shit what you think just read the comments they are literally shitting on you, and you do look like a bitchy cunt so wonder people dont like you, you're not even good enough for a quick fuck
They're being used, but less and less. Go do some research, you'll find it's not me who's living in a fantasy world. That said, I think I'm gonna go ahead and block you if you can't hold a conversation like an adult. Drop the insults, I'm not going to have an argument with a 7th grader.
Okay, I've changed my mind. You're more like a 5th grader. At least 7th graders can construct decent insults instead of just stringing swear words together and hoping it works.
Also, hilarious that you're insulting my appearance when you're apparently so unattractive and insecure you're using a photo of a male model instead of one of yourself.

So what. Time to get a life. Men built the world, get over it.
Yeah, men built the world. So lets rebuild it to be equal.

Men and women are different - they just never will be the same.
Its already happening hon, sorry to disappoint. You can insist its impossible all you like, but that doesn't chsnge the reality.
Just keep telling yourself that. Still not going to change it. YOU will NEVER be just like ME. Promise. :)
The most sexist about English language is one thing I'm still searching for:
Promiscious woman: slut.
Promiscious man: no term
FUCK BOY Jigolo Man-bitch
There is actually a term for a promiscuous. It's fuckboy.
@AD240pCharlie. Didn't I just say that
@soulbabe Yeah, you did, I didn't realize that.
@AD240pCharlie and @soulbabe: look up the dictionary, there is no Fuckboy or fuck boy. Moreover it isn't a degragatory term for a promiscious man as the term 'slut'
What's your point it's not as widely used because men don't care I call my male cousin a slut
@soulbabe No. In my language there is equal terms for promiscious man and woman. It's not that men don't care. If I used that term to them, they would be deeply offended. @RandomBritishGuy94 yes you are right. there is equal sexism in the English language.
I don't find the word slut degrading it dosnt bother me in the slightest
@soulbabe it's not what you find degrading, but what the word holds meaning s degrading
I still think thair is better things to worry about than English is racist for insistence cancer, people in distress after a disaster, people trying to blow us up, the abuse at public schools that push to a braking point making school shooting, people being aboused by. well, here is a crazy one.
Did you just call me crazy?
@soulbabe Yeah! who cares about what your country goes through? do you think the world revolves around USA? Discussing different matters doesn't devalue the one we are talking about it.

Again never said you couldn't
Now have w nice night day whatever the fuck it is
Please just stop this insanity. For the sake of all humanity, just STOP right now.

Other than its stupid to care about and changing a whole damn language I's a pain and annoying and none give a shot except crazy people

Thanks for sharing your Take with GirlsAskGuys Community.
Critical theory and postmodernism at play. Gotta change language to fit your narrative and create newspeak.
Did you for real not even read as far as the second sentence?
It seems you're basically pushing for a softer language which hides more and says less.
How does using male and female terms that are actually equivalent softer? How is not using male generics softer, or hiding? How does any of this make language say less? Explain.

Softer language takes the life out of Life.
Use your own words, not someone elses. How are my suggestions in favor of "softer language", and how is that bad?
Hmm, that's what I get for not proof reading. The intended meaning there was that that should be the solution to male generics, not all pronoun use.
But you've still failed to explain hoq my changes make it softer.
I did, you just skimmed over it. "Talking in your ideal language would be as dry and emotionless as legalese adding hours of gibberish without saying much. Feeling better about using a language Will Not make people feel better about themselves." =Softer words so no one gets hurt.
That's not an explanation. You still haven't provided any reason why my proposed changes to the language would make it emotionless or soft.
Awesome, the feminists are here to ruin this site with their toxic warped views on humanity! Gooooo Feminism!
I doubt anyone else on GAG will read and understand this as well as I do. Very good.
LAUGH! SOON THESE POLITICALY CORRECT SNOW FLAKES WILL kill off all of man kind!
the wording is almost always in favor of the male gender or gives them the priority, but it is what it is, it's become a habit
So we should break that habit.
annnnnd some people continue to look for reasons to blame everything on men
Yikes, you didn't even read as far as the second sentence? "By that I don’t mean that the language itself was consciously created to favor men over women, or that any particular individual or group is responsible for this"
Well to be fair, your title doesn't really inspire an interest for a lot of people to even read this through.
@Nivinxus Judging by the amount of comments on this take, the title inspires plenty of interest.
So I chose the option that results in more people reading but also more idiots commenting, and that's fine by me.
get over yourself, all languages have their own special structures, no one is gonna change English so you feel better about yourself.
English is already changing, and has changed significantly over time. So sorry honeybunch, but this kind of change is already happening, I'm just helping it along.
you can lie to yourself but it ain't happening, stop being a dumb fuck and grow up
It is changing.
Drop the insults, I'm not going to have an argument with a 7th grader.
ugly cunt fuck off with your stupid fantasy world, shit you're not even attractive enough to be a bitch
That's beyond laughable. So is your 'ideology'. Good riddance. Everyone is sick to death of your crap.
