Unpopular opinion time! I mean this is my first MyTake so I'll try my best to be super opinionated and give nobody the benefit of the doubt.

I see a lot of people in the internet use the phrase 'sensitive' or 'triggered' very often. Using this phrase to describe those who are easily offended or outraged when you make an offensive joke. Some people have the backbone to actually apologize, and the humble and decent people can find it in them to forgive them. But there is a line between being innocent and malicious when you make... jokes.

Once upon a time people were actually humble, and people actually conducted themselves in a manner that contributed to society. I'm beginning to see a gap between people's narcissism and their behavior starting to close , and I would like to give the people of G@G 5 signs that you're not funny, and are just an asshole.

1.) You make blatant statements and say they're jokes, and act as if the jokes are obvious.

This case is probably the most innocent, but it's still pretty hard to defend when people are clearly upset about the attempt at a joke you've made, and you assume it's obviously a joke.

For short its the law that if you have a nonverbal form of communication that you wrote as an ironic statement or sarcastic remark, there is no way for people observing to be able to tell what you wrote is a joke if you do not immediately provide indication of irony before or after the statement.

A good example is this statement.

Everyone knows black people prefer slavery.

This statement is ignorant and racist, and shows no sign of actual sarcasm or irony.

As opposed to an actually sarcastic statement.

Everyone knows that black people prefer slavery, why else would they fight the civil war in order to earn their freedom? They clearly wanted to be enslaved right?

It establishes a contrary to an otherwise ignorant and racist statement, this making it ironic.

Irony is hard, so don't hurt yourself trying to make people figure out your joke like a riddle.

2.) You pull the "it's just a joke" card.

Wow! Looks like we have quite the comedian among us! We are all laughing about how all mentally ill people should die, or how you keep calling the gay kid at college a faggot, and then calling the kid who defends him a fag enabler.

Saying demeaning and ridiculous things to someone or about a certain group, and then claim you're running some sort of satire act, is laughable and pathetic, and you should own up to being verbally abusive and insensitive, rather than claiming you like to joke around.

Another great example of this is a man named Alex Jones, who tried to get custody of his kids back from his ex wife. One of the things against him was his aggressive and sociopathic behavior on his internet show called INFOWARS, shown in many clips provided.

And his laws then tried to flip this scenario that he is "playing a character" and that his entire YouTube channel is satire.

Obviously not true, clearly a way of covering up someone's apathy, and undeniably a slap in the face to anyone who is concerned about the message you're spreading based on your social reach. You're not fooling anyone, just own it.

3.) You use it to put other groups or individuals down.

Normally jokes are meant to empower and bring people together as a community, to relate to people x and make them feel like they're included. Not to make them feel like they're the actual joke, especially on a racist/sexist/ablelist level.

Jokes like this are an accurate example.

Now keep in mind I know that family guy is meant to be offensive and it's become its brand of "comedy" at this point. But this joke undeniably out those who cut themselves and self mutilate under a spotlight, when it's and extremely delicate issue. It's not like the purpose of the joke was "suicide is bad" , the joke was portrayed as "people who cut themselves only want attention", and it's dry, tasteless, and not even giggle worthy.It's just set up terribly and doesn't even take the topic and spin it to make me laugh.

4.) You make offensive statements to get a rise out of people.

I feel like I shouldn't have to say too much about this topic, but a lot of people on social media or even with the people they work with, make " jokes" to bait people into getting mad, then acting superior when they do. Or saying offensive words like faggot or n** to get people to laugh simply because it's offensive. Kind of like this meme right here.

It's clearly trying to be edgy and offensive and saying things that are obviously going to make people mad. Another example is rape jokes which are very hard to do right, but then people fuck them up by making memes like these.

It's clearly just really antisocial edgy teenagers who think if they say the word rape, faggot, n**, or any other demeaning slur, it makes them shocking or different, when in reality it just makes you look desperate for attention.

5.) You can dish it but can't take it.

I think the most important rule of comedy is that if you're to make an "edgy" or mocking joke, you should at least be able to take any response that comes to you.

Here's and example conversation of not being able to take a joke despite starting it off.

Person 1: "So how's your alcoholic dad? You smell like booze and child rape."

Person 2: "Probably with your alcoholic mom at a Binny's, probably explains your ADHD. "

Person 1: "Dude that's fucked up and you need to apologize."

All jokes or returned insults are fair play when you start them, even if what these two angry people said was true, they revoke their right to be offended if they dished out first.

People will always say "You're too sensitive" and get offended...about people being offended is hypocritical and lacks so many layers of basic respect.

Final thoughts.

Stop trying so hard to appeal to your degenerate community and realize that maybe you're not actually funny, and you should try to interact with genuine people who are actually funny. Acting silly and juvenile is a matter of taste, but acting anti-social and edgy is pathetic and it doesn't really impress anyone that don't know you enough.

Those are funny, you just don't understand humor, probably inclined towards virtue signaling to show how great you are because you can get easily offended or you just have no idea why we have humor to begin with. I find those jokes funny, this despite the fact that I have been raped, I have been beaten and tortured as a child. Despite the fact that I was stabbed in the fucking head by my mother boyfriend. Despite the fact that it took me most of my life to try and undo the trauma I experienced. And through it all, I laughed, I joked about the abuse, I joked about the rape. When my coworker had a brain tumor and was in the hospital waiting for surgery I went to visit him. I joked about his brain surgery, I joked about his tumor. When all the other workers left I was walking out and he stopped me and thanked me because he had been so scared and the humor helped get him through. We joke about dark things not because we want them to happen, only an idiot would make that argument, every one knows rape is bad, violence against children is bad, racism is bad. We joke because the world can get really dark and the only way for us to mentally prepare us for it, to cope with the stress is by telling jokes, to take that seemingly insurmountable mountain and turn it into a mole hill. That's how we get by. So either your incredibly insincere or you have never experienced true pain in your life, you have never seen how dark the world can really get because if you did you would know that humor is our weapon against it and you pretending to be offended by it because they don't spell out what we all know is a given, is quite frankly the most offensive thing I've seen. Their is a reason why the trickster, the joker/comedian feature so prominently in cultures, its because they can say things that others are to afraid to, they can bring catharsis and they can point to things that are wrong in our society that others are to afraid to talk about.

It's not about having it being a parody, it's just about it having a mocking tone rather than a clever one. It's funny how most people who are reading this don't realize that offending people is my main issue. My problem is how desperate for attention you come off for posting shit that's only trying to offend people. The monkey one is not the picture I was looking for, but it half proves my point. I admit it's good satire, I had one that literally had a picture of Obama with the text Obama= n** on it... But the link wouldn't work.

My point is that some people need to realize that they are not clever, are trying too hard, and are so narcissistic that they bring up "The Joker" as a good example of what a person should be like.

I respect dark comedy and anti comedy, but there's a point where you need to stop and think... "I'm will this be funny?" Instead of "Will this get people mad, resulting in me getting attention? "

As some comedians have pointed out when you say something "fucked up", in order to make a person laugh its coming from the same place as a normal joke, it just didn't hit the mark. I don't see that as an issue, it was the same goal i. e. to make a joke and make people laugh, it just didn't work out and some times that happens. Not every one is a comedian, doesn't mean every one who isn't should stop trying to joke around. Others do want to provoke, but the question is why? I mean the Obama one your talking about, sounds bad but what was the point? They where probably very much against Obama but pointing out that every one else seems to idolize him and never question him and so they wanted to stir things up, get people pissed off because they where tired of the idol worship. Not saying it does any good but its still a legitimate form of expression and quite frankly I doubt the person was trying to make a joke with that.

Intent matters, some times we say things to rile people up in order to call attention to problems. Not all of them are going to be clever because not every one is clever, not every one has a comedic mind, not every one knows how to express their opinions or ideas fluently and in a way that is easily understandable to others. These are things to consider.

That's called shock humor. Shock humor is entirely based off of setting and tone. When giving people fucked up shit as a joke, it has to be in a calm setting, that shocks you into remembering you're watching/reading a comedy.

An example would be after you establish the 'first unusual thing', you can immediately escalate it by saying or writing something that makes people think "oh wow I can't believe I laughed at that." Hypothetically, when you're just writing an opinion piece about how Obama is a bigger because you don't believe he did a good job as president, and infringing too text bottom text meme fomat, that doesn't make you funny, or profound, it just makes you an asshole.

Honestly I do think it says a person is an a-hole if say you're a guy and your first instinct with a girl you don't know, is to make a sexist joke or you're not Mexican and you make racist Mexican "jokes," all the time. This unfortunate climate we live in makes certain individuals feel more and more empowered to be the a-holes they truly are, you know, as long as they tack on "but you're too sensitive," or "triggered," or "it's just a joke." Well if no one is laughing... as you point out... maybe you're just an a-hole.

I had this talk with a buddy of mine about making jokes that are clearly in poor taste, and people do that and some people laugh, but typically they laugh because a) these people are friends and they know there is clearly no ill will behind it or b) your'e making these jokes around everyone but the target of the joke. Basically I don't care if you think you're funny, or other people think you're funny or not, if you say something offensive, hurtful, discriminatory, etc, about someone and someone says to you, hey, that's not cool, and you're reaction is to then amp it up or bully them, you are clearly an a-hole.

While there are exceptions (I guess the Family Guy suicide thing was a good example), most 'offensive' jokes that are deliberately offensive as part of their mechanism, are actually very funny. The thing is to include a subtle sense of self-awareness, either in the wording, or just how you say it.

And even if it is 'anti-social', as you call it, why the fuck should anyone censor it? That is censorship, which artists are in a perpetual struggle with.

Maybe I dislike the object of the following joke myself, either way it demonstrates that 'politically incorrect' (an oxymoron if ever there was one) can certainly be, and often is, funny. The question is whether it is Institutionalized - i. e. an abuse of power by a film studio or a record label to portray males in a bad way. Me telling a joke does not have a society-reaching effect.

It reminds me of the two Polack immigrants working in an English zoo. One says to the other 'for 20,000 pounds... would you have sex with that gorilla?'. The other Polack thinks for a minute, and thoughtfull replies... 'hm... give me six months to come up with the money'.

Funny, and anti-PC. Bernard Manning is a legend, because he combined joke-writing and delivery brilliance, with controversial subject matter.

I agree with your take. Though to add on people are going to get offended by some things (even mundane things or things that aren't offensive to most). In those cases own up to your joke, apologize and most importantly know your crowd.

I have a group of friend where we jokingly insult each other sometimes. Not to offend, put down, or hurt each other but just a good zing here and there. We dish it and take it like you said. Though we make sure not to go too far and apologize if we do. If anyone is a bit sensitive about a topic we leave it alone out of respect for each other. I'm not saying any of us are funny. We teae each other an have our inside jokes that some people won't get or some people may take the wrong way if they don't know us and just randomly walked in. There's more of a time and a place.

The real difference between whether you're being funny and telling a joke or just being an asshole is shown through the reaction of those who are recieving the joke. If enpeople sre giving a genuine non-awkward laugh then you're good. If people are offended, hurt and upset, chances are you need to change something about your "jokes". Though like I also said there's always a chance someone will get offended, especially now a days in the times where people get offended over having a door held open for them. Just judge and know your crowd.

I can agree on #1 and how that can be stupid when you're writing rather than verbally speaking, because no one can hear the inflection of your tone, but most of this, I wouldn't agree with. I believe everything should be open to humor, and am firmly against joke or speech policing.
There's a reason certain comedians were considered great. For example, George Carlin and Andy Kaufman.. They were great because their humor was offensive and true. They would push boundaries all the time. Their jokes weren't made in malice, they didn't do it with the intent of hurting anyone or putting anyone down (and neither does Family Guy, really).
I don't think we can have great comedy like that again if no one is willing to test boundaries anymore, if they're telling jokes in constant fear that someone, somewhere, will be offended. Safe comedy is not necessarily funny comedy.

But I think the author's point is that some people get their jollies out of mocking, making fun of, or bullying others verbally, and when called on it, they try to claim that they were just joking. No they weren't. It might have been HUMOROUS to them, sure; it might have been funny to THEM, and made THEM laugh. But the only other people who would find it funny is people who enjoy seeing the less fortunate or less powerful get picked on, or people who get caught up in a mob mentality. This is specifically different from jokes and humor meant to amuse everyone or make social commentary.

Why am I not suprised? I am actually more so surprised the comment section isn't a lot more vulgar. Consider yourself lucky. I tried to do something similar for the annoying "snowflake" word and others like it used to a point that it's annoying as hell. To your first point, if a black person said that line I can see the irony behind it and laugh, nobody needs to say anything, the tone is obvious. I think all Asians look the same too... Irony isn’t hard to clever people and that’s who they are aiming for with their joke. There’s a reason sarcasm is the *lowest* form of wit because it spells it all out to the audience, which isn’t funny at all.

The family guy meme is quite funny too, it made me laugh. It’s a skill to take something serious and joke about it.

Great take! The key to a really good joke is to attempt to resolve the problem you're making fun of, or offer some OBVIOUS misinterpretation of facts. Your line about why blacks fought for the South during the Civil War is great example of this.

I think one really important side to this (that you missed through no fault of your own) is that most of these really offensive jokes are actually mislabeled satire. The purpose of satire is to be humorous, but more than that, it's an attempt to shed light on an issue by proposing a clearly ridiculous solution/interpretation of the issue at hand. The really offensive jokes often do not offer any sort of solution to the proposed issue. One might satirize the problem of over population by suggesting that we eat half the babies born each year, for example. You would know that this was satire because the joke would then try to tout the benefits of Cannibalism, and propose a means of deciding which babies would be eaten.

Sorry, man, but anything can be funny. Just because someone makes a joke that you or somebody else doesn't like, that doesn't make them an asshole. At this point I just learned to believe in a few things:
1) not everyone has the same kind of sense of humor, I can't expect everyone to like my jokes
2) people can be sensitive at times
3) sometimes it is not about the joke but rather about the person. If your best friend and your worst enemy told you the same joke, would you find both equally funny?
4) most importantly, none of the above makes one person better than the other. There's nothing to be mad about it.

It’s not just racist jokes. It’s also the stereotypical jokes as well. For example, blonde jokes.

I’m a natural blonde so I was always the butt of those jokes that basically implied that I’m unintelligent and it actually made people treat me different, usually not in a good way. People closer to me were nice enough to ask me if it was okay if they made a blonde joke around me. Because of this, I tend to stay away from the racist jokes.

All of this is wrong, the reality is some people are more sensitive than others and there are times and places for everything. You don't get to decide what other peoples intentions are or if their words are offensive or if they meant offense for not.

It's not about being sensitive, it about whether or not you're actually funny. People's intentions aren't important unless they are stated or at least selectively implied. Some of these jokes I regret including because they are kind of funny, but most of them are not.

Comedy and people getting offended isn't always like sticking your hand in the water to see if it's cold. Sometime it's like sticking your hand in the fire to see if it's hot. There are some no brainers when it comes to this stuff, and most of these examples are.

Intention obviously matters, your point is only to say that people should make it more pronounced. But that's only for your benefit. *Not every joke is meant to be for you.* If they can get the humor then that's fine.

There are people who are assholes to people and then try to play if off and a joke and other such things but your examples and most of what you've talked about doesn't seem to be in reference to those people. They are that way because they can't listen to other people, so a Take isn't going to reason them out of it -- and this one wouldn't because you're not using reasons that target the way they behave. This Take has a more political correctness tone.

A better example would be went an asshole just berates someone and only when they get told to back off to they try and pull the "just a joke" card. It takes more than just a simple statement that *seems* offensive in a very general way.
