What is violence against women?

Probably when you hear this question, you think about a slap, a punch, a kick, or any kind of physical aggression.

But violence goes far beyond that: several women suffer every day some kind of aggression and don't even realize it.

Often, recurring attitudes that hurt women's dignity and self-esteem are also considered violence.

1 in 4 women will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime.

What are the kinds of violence against women?

There are five kinds of violence against women.

Although most of them do not have physical aggression, they are considered crimes.

1. Physical Violence

Break the Silence!

Any conduct that offends her integrity or health.

They are the most reported cases and most of the time the aggressors are the victim's partners or family members.

2. Psychological Violence

Violence. It happens in many ways.

Any conduct that causes women emotional damage and low self-esteem and to control their actions, behaviors, beliefs and decisions.

It is one of the most common and most difficult violence to be detected by the victims, but the psychological damage is usually devastating.

Aggressions can happen in the form of swearing, hurting the victim's morale.

Words are used by aggressors as a way to humiliate women, who often are also prohibited from wearing certain clothes, studying, working or having friends.

3. Sexual Violence

Any conduct that compels the woman to witness, to maintain or to participate in unwanted sexual intercourse, through intimidation, threat, coercion or use of force.

The victim's blame (she was in tight clothes, she was asking, she was drunk) is also a great factor, responsible for the increase of this type of violence.

4. Asset Violence

Much more than Psysical Violence

Any action or conduct that can set up retention, subtraction, partial or total destruction of women's objects. Such as instruments of work, personal documents, goods, values and rights

5. Moral Violence

Words can and will break you

It is not a very commented violence but it is more common than you might think.

We can say that it is any conduct that would cause defamation or injury.

It's when the aggressor gives an opinion against the woman's moral reputation and makes lying reviews.

This kind of violence can also happen over the Internet.

If you can see it, you can change it.

Violence against women is a crime and needs to be known. A man who commits violence once will probably do the same thing again and again.

If you are suffering some kind of violence, report it and ask for a protective measure against your attacker.

This action will stop him to come near you and give you more security.

I hate to be the one to say this... these issues don't just affect women. They affect men as well. And maybe that's also realized and this Take was focusing only on women- no issue with that. Just making sure that's understood.

Many of the acts of violence you brought up are not crimes. Cursing at somebody is not a crime, harassment is. Accusing a woman of being immoral is not a crime, harassment is. Vandalism is a crime, a man or woman not wanting a man or woman to use his/her money without asking and attempting to restrict that is not a crime.

Sexual violence disproportionately affects women, and is definitely a crime. No argument there.

Gaslighting and manipulation is not a crime, though harassment is and gaslighting is a truly messed up thing to do to somebody (consistent- in any given situation, a lot of people gaslight at times.)

Also, I've never heard physical violence defined as offending a woman's integrity.

These behaviors aren't good for anybody to engage in, both genders do. If they were crimes, everybody would be in jail. If somebody is threatening you, report them. But you can't report somebody for cursing at you in an argument.

I really feel bad for men. If something happens to them and they complain or even if they cry, they get victimized again and are seen as less of a man. As women, we should be happy there are so many men just on this thread who are willing to defend us. But how many women do the same for the men in their lives?

Ther very best men in my life never ask for help, or say the burden is too much. They just set their jaws and keep on being good guys. OP, if you really want to be courageous, write a mytake from their perspective and speak up for those that no one speaks for.

Great take, but I think there needs to be more focus on violence towards men (not going against your MyTake). I`ve actually experienced more incidents of men being abused in some way than women. I`ve seen it in my own family. My uncle is refused to do certain things and my aunt is scaring the crap out of him when she is around. He is shaky, not himself, and a nervous wreck. She is also obsessive. I feel so sorry for my uncle and other men I`ve seen and I want to do something.

Through my life my mom has told me "I am the boss no matter what". I understand she said it to give me confidence and protect me. However, I disagree with this statement. NOBODY is the boss in the relationship. The key is to COMPROMISE.

There are many "invisible" ways that I see men are being mistreated. I see them all the time, and nothing is done about it. For example, there are women who are constantly asking where the guy is, what he is doing and who he is with. There are women who make men dress a certain way, talk a certain way and behave a certain way. Some people are transformed in a positive way, but I haven`t considered this the case most of the time.

Anyways, good take. I would love to see a man`s take on the same issue sometime!

first, you are mixing the terms abuse and violence... these words have meanings, and you are going to lose some people's attention when you don't articualte your points using the standard definitons... here are the legal defintions (in the u. s.) if you don't know the difference...

the next point is that you are alienating a portion of your audience by making this about women... there is nothing about violence (or abuse) that needs to be gendered to make your points... you are just begging to have people make a stink about it...

Please don't take this the wrong way, it's just something that's on my mind. My Mom and I have been volunteering at a women's shelter here since I was ten. What has always puzzled me is why women make some of the choices they do as far as guys go. As far as I can tell Most loser guys have a flashing red light over their heads. They're unmistakable. I haven't even had my eighteenth birthday yet and I can spot one a block away. I have seen first hand the end results and can only speculate on how it all came about before the abuse began. But it just confounds me how women hook up with these men in the first place. Granted, we all have different social skills and varying levels of perception. But for the love of God I cannot figure out why they would even give these scumbags a second look.

My second point of confusion is white suburban women who vote for right wing candidates who are clearly unfriendly to women. One of the reasons this problem persists is a lack of will on the part of public officials. The politicians who blame the victims seem to have no problem garnering women's votes. Just ask Donald Trump.

I hate it how in today's society all these things are about women. No one ever mentions or cares about men who experience the exact same behavior from women. Only some men stand up for other men because they have experienced it too. I don't disagree or dislike your post. I'm just cross about how men are never mentioned and offered help. There are so many help lines and support groups for women but almost none for men. It's like all men are powerful and never experience problems. Look at the real world for once. Violence goes both ways. I have never been violent to a Women in my life and never would. But have been beaten, Raped, drugged and more by an ex that is female over a 5 year period. We should be fighting violence in general not just one sided.

No its a dangerous assumption that should be addressed. Because of this assumption thousands of innocent victims of domestic violence have been arrested, tried and convicted. Further the standard idea of a guy beating his wife who is unable or unwilling to hit him back is the LEAST likely scenario to exist (10%), the more likely scenario is a guy being beat by his wife and him unwilling or unable to hit her back (20% of the time). Yet this view of a guy hitting his wife is the assumptive situation by law enforcement and the courts. I feel. a need to address this when I see it, because I feel that this is one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in the west, and we are exporting this idea.

The Duluth Model is deeply flawed, based on ideology not research. Your mytake is a perpetuation of that model. And it is a public document, both searchable and linkable.

Women are more abusive then men, statistically, and violence is only physical. If you want to go on about emotional abuse and so on then fine, but violence is by definition physical or at least carries the threat of physicality. Abuse is different.
