Dear Government healthcare,

I'm poor, i'm a college student with diagnosed anxiety and ADHD and I don't have the luxury to have non gov. insurance. Besides most government facilities being off brand lysol shit holes and the patrons being less than classy, getting an appointment and medication there is like pulling teeth.

Multiple times I have had to go without my medication, especially adderall, because the pharmacies lack of supply, expired prescriptions, staff miscommunication and just plain fuck ups! I COULD GET DRUGS OFF THE STREET EASIER THAN THIS! And when iv'e asked people why is this happening and how can it be resolved it's basically always the same thing " well basically we can't", everyone's hands seem to be tied and missing a medication just "comes with the territory of taking adderall. My doctor even told me to just stop taking it on the weekend so I can save up for the inevitable times when I can't get my medication BECAUSE OF THE SYSTEM. This medication isn't just a "study drug" it's a medication to help me feel normal, I don't take this medication only when I need to work or if i'm going to school it literally helps me function as a human and i'm told to just stop taking it so I can hoard it like a squirrel for fucking winter.

I agree with you. I've not had your specific issue, but I've had my own. It's a mess in more ways that what you just noted.

What you noted is why so many fight against "Socialized" medicine, but I won't get into politics. The problem is in general, the govt gets involved too much, it gets screwed up. True for school, medicine, etc.. No govt, also bad.

Here's my golden lesson from when I ran into the medical system issues. Find the solution yourself! Turn inside, use the resources you have in the library, friends, health food stores, alternate care doctors, God, prayer, food, trauma recovery therapy and books... find the solution. Own the solution.

The problem is the ASSumption... taht some "Dr." can take care of you by providing a pill to plug a hole in your psyche. That's total complete BS! But that's the system. The sooner you get really pissed off and go the other direction from the system, own how you feel and healing that inner person, the better you will be.

There are some cases that require meds to survive... Im sure you FEEl that is true, but I suspect that is not the issue. The issue is probably early life trauma recovery, meditation, nutrition, etc.. I'm not a Dr., that's my WAG.

I respectfully disagree. While I would LOVE to be able to go without medication that just doesn't seem like a realistic possibility without some major thing happening. I mean having anxiety isn't just like a little worry in the back of your head that thinks the worst possible things it literally holds me back form doing things and it's been that way since I was very young. I feel like some of it could be have been worsened by other things but I think this is something I was born with, a chemical imbalance.

The way I even found out about this is because I researched a lot about it when I was in middle school because I could tell something was really off and I was able to convince my mom to help me.

And Iv'e tried so much to be able to fix or even ease this without medication (not necessarily by my own will but because finding the right medication can be hard at first.) like I would get so anxious that all my muscles would get tense, so tense that it would start to pinch on the nerves that lead to my arms and fingers and I would start to loose sensation in my fingers. I tried all of the anxiety techniques of mindfulness and deep breathing, stretching, eating right, exercise, mediation, yoga, therapy, music, and just "toughing it out" and nothing worked completely or even enough to really relieve any anxiety. I mean it's seriously debilitating.

I can only imagine. I've had an aunt who had a lot of anxiety, I had nothing for her at the time while she was alive. Something went wrong in early 20's.
Can you share what you've tried? I can say from experience... life is frustrating sometimes... we own our bodies/minds/spirit around your age, but trying to find a solution can be difficult. The system is corrupt due to $. I went through the path of medicine... hit roadblocks... then I started to explore. I'm not way off the edge, I just look far and wide as well as within western medicine. I'm sure there are values to "drugs" for some cases, but in general... I don't like it! It makes no sense... it only makes sense as a business enterprise... not health restoration. Put it this way... if someone breaks a leg, get it mended and use some crutches for a while til it heals (e. g. a drug). But it will need exercised and used... or else it will become useless. Same witha drug.. need something to feel good for a few months... ok! Forever, something's not right. I've had Dr.'s try to sell me and family members on that, and chiropractors. It's baloney... it's a lifetime crutch rather than do work to change. That's my experience.

I've just been around counselors, trauma therapy program and been through enough to have some knowledge to open your mind maybe a little more to search for your solution. In short, traumas can occur very shortly after conception and they can create physical issues as well as spiritual. It's too bad people are not taught how their who system works... the info is out there! But if they did... it might soak into those profits... One friend of mine was on around 15 meds at one time for her issues. After some healing time... none! To be honest, I can't stand the system, but I understand why it is how it is. Even those inside I know don't like it... Become a rebel, you'll be better off:)!

But how is it socialism if you pay into the system and you get the service you deserve? Yep, and that's exactly what you can expect all your healthcare experiences to be like if we move to a government run healthcare system.

There are soooooo many problems with a government healthcare system and I'm not going to take the time to address them all here, so I'll just address one facet of the issue. Doctors are generally paid relatively well in the US, and that attracts the best and brightest people to the profession. Under a government system that will all go away.

There is also a significant profit incentive in the US to develop cutting edge drugs, medical procedures, treatments and equipment. The entire world benefits from that because we share generally our medical advancements and knowledge with the international medical community. Medicine in other countries has benefited hugely from the advancements in US healthcare system. And again, when the government takes over US healthcare that will all go away and the entire world will lose out as a result, as will Americans themselves.

US healthcare has its problems. It is certainly imperfect. But it is far better than the alternative. Many people are just too ignorant of the facts and implications to see it for what it really is.

The vast majority of people can afford health care insurance. There is "free" health care for those who cannot afford it, but it isn't nearly as good as private care, which is how it should be. Nearly everyone has the capability to earn enough to pay for private health care insurance, but there needs to be some motivation to make that a priority, rather than buying 22" rims or a new video game console or a new outfit or whatever.

Health care isn't a human right - you can never have a right to the work or property of others - and, yes, it's something you need to work for and pay for. I'm not against a safety net for those at the very bottom, but putting the whole population on that system would be an absolute disaster. Taxes would take a huge hike, so it certainly wouldn't be "free", and the quality and convenience would go down quickly, because doctors and nurses would make much less, which would motivate those people to find higher-earning careers. That would create a brain-drain, quality would fall, and many more people would die in hospitals of "natural causes" for things that can be fixed today - and far MORE people would spend a lot more time in discomfort and being disabled due to the lack of timely treatment.

There is a thing called "pharmacy tourism." So a private American insurance company will basically book and pay the travel, the drug, and pay a few hundred dollars for the trouble. Old people have value of history, experience, wisdom and knowledge, often beyond that of textbooks. For example, if you want to hear real stories of war, and how absolutely devastating it can be, or about government corruption, talk to some old combat vets. Oh, Vietnam era guys have the best, in my opinion. They hold back nothing. Yes, those experiences and stories can be useful for daily life, or changing perspective.

About 5 years ago, I had a severe allergic reaction in which my throat was closing up. I went to the emergency room and after about an hour or two of being monitored with some mild drugs I was out of there. The bill totalled $5,000.

The medical system shouldn't only be for the elderly, it should be for everyone. It's one thing if everyone had to pay for themselves, but the fact that we pool our money together as taxes for one group's benefit is unjust. Not only that, but it inflates the cost of care for everyone.

The logistics behind US healthcare is poor. Real cost is not that high for the hospital, but they must profit and also pay for malpractice insurance. With a dying person, that's going to be high.

I'm not against keeping people alive. I am against how American hospitals treats medical patients, and definitely agree that younger people get raked over the coals. ER visits are always expensive, so I try to avoid them.

Then again, we're pretty much all one catastrophy away from being bankrupt, homeless, or some other problem, with healthcare costs being one of the major causes. The system functions as intended.

Ebola is a different type of virus with different transmission dynamics. The R0 is less than 2 in third-world conditions. It drops to almost 0 in first-world conditions. No comparison

Credit where it's due: GW Bush took the danger seriously, which probably helped Obama deal with his problems. Obama's administration, in turn, passed on good advice to Trump's administration. The serious people at the top levels, who paid attention, are all gone, now, so the important work has continued at lower levels, without influence.

In case you didn't notice, I gave credit to both Obama AND Bush; neither of them were dumb enough to reduce readiness. In fact, there was $870 million for pandemic flu preparation in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of [February] 2009, until it was stripped out by Republican Senator Susan Collins; I'm sure that had no impact on the 2009 pandemic outcome.

Did you read the NYTimes article about the Trump administration (presumably without his knowlege) running a simulation of almost exactly what's happening now just last year, and finding the lack of preparedness that we're seeing now? (The government is still trying to do their jobs and work for the people, despite the leadership.)

Sorry, i'm a "Struggling" college student. I know i'm not in the lowest class but that doesn't mean that I don't struggle with the finical responsibility that comes along with college even providing that I have Financial aid.

You are spoiled and entitled and are both spending money on college while working less because you want to. You are extremely privileged and well off that you can elect to make such a life decision like go to college. So quit whining. People like you are disgusting. Get to know some actual poor people maybe. It might do you some good.

They would just laugh at your whole post, money for medication for anxiety? They would just assume they can't afford it half them and never bother to get it prescribed in the first place, short of whats free. lol your joking right? Let me guess, your the type of person that thinks no one can truly suffer unless they're homeless, starving, refugees with a disability? I literally don't know where to begin. Sure finances aren't relevant because I can just get rid of my car and my dog (which is considered my family) and stop taking my medication and stop going to college because that would save me a lot of money but you know what that would make me? Homeless without transportation.

What if I was what you considered to be "poor" and I was able to get to where I am, wouldn't you be proud of me or wouldn't you think good for her? And even then you wouldn't be like "stop complaining because you were poor before so this is obviously better" because everyone wants to get better, do better, and BE BETTER, that's just how people work. the severity of the problem is also relevant to your circumstance in life.

For example someone wouldn't belittle a women who's mother dies at the age of 82 just because in a 3rd world country women die before they can even be mothers.

Not being able to have access to your medication isn't not a problem just because impoverished people don't have medicine period.

Im not saying you're having a problem but i have a problem with how you describe yourself as poor. I was a broke college student before but i could easily at anytime not went and worked and had plenty money. Thats not poor and its disrespectful. Its like if i stub my toe and demand the put handicapped spaces closer to the doors because i been parking in them. That is bullshit because a stubbed toe is nowhere near being handicapped and to pretend to be is fucking disrespectful to actual handicapped people. Now if i just asked how i could best deal with a stubbed toe, sure ok, thats a legit problem, but it certainly has nothing to do with being handicapped.

Look if your were able to be a full time college student AND have a job than seriously more power to you but that's not something I can do without my grades dropping. Right now I have all A's but just because my classes end doesn't mean I don't have a bunch of homework to get through and that takes up the majority of my time.

My plan has been to work all summer to save up my money to be able use during the fall and spring semester and even during school I try to take as many odd jobs as I can but most people don't reply to those and you can only advertise on some places and it's not like I spend money frivolously either, I don't go out to eat, I haven't bought new clothes or shoes in years, I don't spend money on makeup and jewelry and when I do spend money it's almost always on some place like alliexpress where the prices are dirt cheap but take months to get here because they're coming from china.

I would love to be able to manage school and a job and it's crazy to me that some people can do that but I just don't have the time. Now I won't say i'm poor in the since that I can't buy myself food or basic necessities and that's largely because I don't live alone and I'm able to have help from other people but just because you go to college does not mean your well off. I could've gone to some school in California that was specifically catered in my interest but that's waaaay to much money because I would have to move there in my own place and pay entirely or most of the college fees depending on if the government would provide me with financial aid but that would only be a drop in the bucket at that point. I go to a community college and I probably won't go to a University because that's to expensive or not worth it for what I'm studying.
