Prison is a nasty place where no one wants to go, yet where some deserve to be. However, there is no rehabilitation there, and it is where danger lurks and cruelty to others dwells.

Prison is an awful place. Not talking Martha Stewart prison. Poor people prison is not designed to rehabilitate, rather to make money off you and turn a blind eye to traumatic events. Most people don't care about prisoners, and think they are all bad people. Don't get me wrong there are some people that absolutely should be put down. Harsh maybe, but true. People who hurt others repeatedly, should be put down. Instead they lock them up with the rest, including people and kids who make dumb decisions.

Mental health in prison is a big problem that is ignored. People with major mental problems get released just to be put back in. Every prisoner will go through traumatic experiences, and when out will have to deal with PTSD rest of their life. They will have hard time getting a job and trying to be a lawful person in society. The game is rigged. Inside you often have to pick a side, become a gang member for protection. Forced to get gang tats on your body, mostly on face and chest, representing ownership in order to obtain protection. They will make you do things that, when caught, will add more time inside. It's survival. The hole, is inhumane. Yet, they continue to use it which is scientifically cruel and causes mental illness. They want to keep you inside so they can continue making money and fulfilling their quota in order to gain yearly bonuses. If they don't have enough prisoners they can get fired as well.

Government should not allow corporations to own prisons for this reason alone. Not all prisoners are bad people, but what they experience inside traumatically affects people and changes them. My uncle killed himself not to go back. Kinda person who would do anything to make you smile. Because of the PTSD from prison, he started self-medicating, and stole to keep up his medication. Not a bad person, but no longer able to have a normal life. This is a serious problem that many people do not recognize, simply because they feel all people in prison are bad people that deserve such treatment. Wake up America!

So, who really runs a prison? It's gangs mostly. The jailers just work with them to try and keep the peace. To those incarcerated, they may not ever have any real peace if they ever get released. I wish someone knew how to solve the problem of prison reform. Any Brubakers here?

The US has among the highest recidivism rates in the world. Almost 44% of criminals get put back into prison within a year of being released. If that doesn't tell you our system is broken, I don't know what else does. We don't try to HELP these people, we just lock them up like animals and just expect them to behave better after they're released. I'm not too familiar with what kind of help criminals receive once they're released, but as far as I can tell they don't give them many resources or tools to help themselves both when they're in prison and after they get released.

It's probably too expensive for America to adopt but Norway has one of the lowest recidivism rate in the world. The maximum sentence any criminal can receive is 21 years. I don't know if you've ever watched "World's Toughest Prisons" but I took a particular interest in the episode about Norway's prison system.

They create a sense of normalcy. Prisoners share a block with like 3 or 4 other prisoners. The block comes complete with their own kitchen, lounge room, TV set, etc. Pretty much like how an apartment would be. They're expected to keep their respective spaces clean. They're free to come and go around the prison grounds as they please, provided that they're not causing trouble, until bedtime that is. They even have their own little grocery store. The guards hand out with them, talk to them, play games with them. They teach them job skills, they provide therapy. They treat the prisoners with kindness and respect, apparently that goes a long way, even with criminals. (who knew right?)

If the American prison system could be more similar to the Norwegians', I believe we'd see a significant decrease in criminals returning to crime.

I think it's more like people are bad. Think of all the things people would do if they thought they would not get caught or things they would do if no one would ever know. Prisons are cruel and unusual punishment. If a women checks into a hotel and someone with a key enters her room and rapes her, she can sue the hotel for a large sum of money and win. By the same token the prisons should be responsible if a prisoner is raped or harmed or refused proper medical care. Prisoners should be able to sue the guards, the warden, and the the state or federal government for a large sum of money and win from the the guards, the warden the government or all three. And, if they want prisoners to work, the prisoners should be paid at least minimum wage. Nor should the prison be allowed to charge unreasonable prices to make phone calls.

If some guards and wardens had to personally pay $100,000 because of their failure to protect a prisoner, that would stop their cruel behavior. And, if the state had a class action lawsuit and had to pay $100 million the cruel and unjust treatment would come to a screeching halt. That in no way would prevent prisons from punishing prisoners that violate the law and reasonable rules.

The only way a prison can prevent violence is to keep everyone in solitary confinement. Half of the people in prison are there because of violent acts. Some would not hesitate to kill in prison too.

I have noticed how many people who have been paroled for a murder charge then murder again. Inmates are even killed in prison by other inmates. The thing is, you never know what id=s going to set someone off these days. Correctional officers also get killed. The percentages may be off however. The only way to keep a prison totally safe is to separate minor crime people from those who committed violent crimes.

Most of those imprisoned are third and forth offense. When they get out they usually go back to the social base that they left. So nothing changes. By the way solitary confinement does not stop the killing. Why do you think Bundy spent his sentence constantly on the road. The inmates working in the kitchen tried to poison him.

As a non US person I cannot comment on US prison conditions. Prison is primarily & should be about retributive punishment. You would have to consider there is a strong discouragement effect on committing crime if it is probable you will go to jail. So there is a rehabilitation (preventative) effect on those who might have committed crime if that punishment wasn't there.

What particularly needs to be discouraged is crimes against persons. Assaults (incl rape) have very severe consequences on individuals - they may never be the same again afterwards, if they survive.

On Monday I got to watch the trial of the guy who assaulted me. He got 200 hrs of community service and that will probably be spent on making soft toys. Probably he will outsource that to his mother, sister and girlfriend and make them make the soft toys.

Am I happy with that 'punishment'. Hell no!

The problem is that some will always push the boundaries and the more society tolerates that, than the boundary gets worse and worse and the behavior more and more extreme.

People who assault simply need to understand it may have long term consequences upon them just as their assault may have on those who they assaulted.

You didn't mention drugs and how they are used to medicate people to manage their traumas rather than resolving them and that's another problem and another discussion.

I know of one man who was rehabilitated because another prisoner or missionary brought him to Christ.. yes Jesus of Nazareth saves! He discovered his trauma from childhood related to his father that turned him bitter and angry combined with his dangerous environment, he became a dangerous man. He was saved and goes into prisons to save other men and wrote a book.

The problem in the world IS Trauma. Most humans are walking emotional zombies controlled by the impacting trauma and they don't know it... just like zombies.

The problem is mixing up different trauma patients, and maybe that is the solution... sorting people out better. It's probably awful and more awful than it needs to be. The effort required to rehab people is huge... we need a lot of Christian missionaries, maybe some muslim ones, and a lot of social workers. I've thought of going to prison to minister and hadn't done it as yet.

We need a movement to fix the system. It will be very hard because you/we/all of us are up against the government, and it separates church and state, doesn't like to change. Ditto the school systems that are creating these people.

I suspect this relates to "bail reform"... which is a nice way of saying... the prisons are full, we don't have space.

What to do... we gotta do it fast. We need revivals to the level that occurred in the past, I hope the inspiration is out there and some young people can lead it.

Like WWII Germany, I think all citizens should be required to do a tour of a prison. Then submit comments for how to improve them. They are our prisons, we need to take ownership. Systems can be very sick, if any person is abused in prison, that is wrong and needs fixed. It should be a place where people are rehabed, that may required individual cells. It may require exectuting a lot more people and may require isolating the narcissistic, bullying, hazardous ones from those whom are not. e. g. we put in place not long ago some police who were doing their job and messed up, we put in prison citizens whom are not generally dangerous... now subjected to further trauma. 1) I do believe that people can be rehabilitated. But I think it's unlikely to be a lot more than are currently rehabilitated.

2) Rehabilitation starts as soon as they step foot in that cell and the door clangs shut. That's when the people who can easily be rehabilitated make a vow that when they get out they won't ever go back again. If they don't make that vow very quickly after entering prison, they are unlikely to ever make it.

3) You have been watching/reading too many documentaries/articles about prison that come from biased sources. The things you describe are greatly over exaggerated. While some of those things do happen, it's far from being the norm. It seems that you are basing your view on a bunch of distorted and very misleading information.

4) The worst prisons are generally the maximum security prisons. Those also house the prisoners who are least likely to be rehabilitated. The people who are more likely to have a chance at rehabilitation will probably be in medium or minimum security prisons. Minimum security is pretty much cake.

5) Any active rehabilitation system will be played like a harp by the prisoners. They will go through the motions and pretend to do what is expected so they can get out on good behavior. When it's highly unlikely to do a damn thing.

I think that anyone who commits a violent crime should be permanently sent to an island to live and never allowed to leave. Let them commit the violence against each other for the rest of their lives. I am sick of paying for these people and their issues. Worse is it's a college campus for career criminals. You might end up in there because you were found passed out in your car at a Walmart parking lot with the heroine needle still in your arm. Excellent but very difficult question. Obviously people in prison have difficulties after a long period of imprisonment to ajust again into society. On the other hand, it's a healthy and logic procedure to remove from society dangerous criminals. If governments prefer to avoid death penalties (another very sensitive topic), I don't see another option than the jail.

How prisoners should be treated is another big problem, and I have no real idea how to make sure the convicted persons will be re-habilitated correctly after their release from prison. Sure is, in order to avoid recidivism, help should be provided in one or another efficient way.

I'm still convinced that, out of security for the common citizens, a very few number of criminals should never be released. No offense meant to anyone.

The prison system - but mostly in the United States - is severely broken and needs to be reformed. We lock up more people than anyone else in the world. Riker's Island is notorious for it's extremely horrid conditions for inmates, so bad that Kalief Browder killed himself too after he came out. Mental experts say that by then the damage was already done and he couldn't cope anymore.

I used to think that the way they do prison in Scandinavia was maybe too soft and naive, but I think we could learn from their system. People who get locked up there have a real method of reforming inmates, and they're treated humanely. We have to stop putting people through a brutal 'disciplinary' machine that makes them hardened or even uncouth when they do get out of prison.

My brother spent at least 8 years in jail and was a different and much better person when he came out but, sadly, that didn't last a long time but, it's mostly because they practically tortured him after he got out!! If they would've just left him the fuck alone, I don't think he would've gone back to being an asshole 2 years later but, my ex-sister, the cunt, was no help, either!! Fucking ignorant bitch said he could stay with her and her hubby as long as he needed to after he got out and then, after maybe a year, if that, she gave him the boot!! Because he was only allowed to stay in certain types of areas, most of the places we found for him were no good in the eyes of the "law" and, of course, that pissed him off quite a bit!!
But, I know of others that have been in jail and came out much better for it.

As a general rule no I don't think so. Can someone who applies themselves and takes advantage of opportunities to learn while locked up come out better? Yes, they can. One of my employees back in Georgia spent close to 8 years in a Federal Prison. While in prison started working on a college degree. I sponsored him at Ga Tech after his release and he graduated with an Engineering Degree. First-rate problem solver too. He got mixed up with the wrong people and got a drug conviction in DC. There were some restrictions on the material he had access to because of his felony conviction, but he proved himself each and every time I asked him to work on a project. He remarried his ex and last I heard is still working for the company. His felony is blocking him from advancing further, but last time we spoke he just said "I am blessed".

I grew up in the ghetto housing projects with racist ghetto blacks for 25 years. I will let you something that society does not know about these people. The problem is not mental health or prison. Criminals are criminals due to poor upbringing and poor parenting. Usually when a kid turns 16, his personality/ character is already set so the chances of rehabilitation over that age is slim to none. What people don't understand is that once you are over a certain age, people do not change. People rarely ever rehabilitate ever in their lives. A lot of these "criminals" suffer from anti social personality disorder or even straight up sociopathy. These are people that BLM is fighting for.

Growing up with these ghetto blacks, my family suffered a ton on a daily basis. We were almost murdered at one particular time. These people are not worthy of your sympathy. George Floyd robbed a woman at gun point. And you're gonna sympathize with him UNTIL IT HAPPENS TO YOU.

yea.. my parents were robbed in the elevator of my apartment building just 12 years ago. The two black kids were caught by police. Then 4 years later, they were released from prison because there wasn't enough space in the jail cells. Once they were let out, they sent their relatives to try to kick our door down to murder us. They tried kicking down our door for 15 minutes. We called the police. They left a few minutes before cops arrived. Knife marks, screwdriver marks all over our door. They tried cutting our phone line so we wouldn't be able to call the police.

Our door would've been kicked down and we would all have been murdered if it we hadn't installed a sliding bar lock. I wouldn't be alive talking to you today if we didn't have that extra lock.

Then a few days later, we saw someone try to use our screw driver to take out our door lock at midnight. But they were unsuccessful.

For many many years after that, we had vengeful neighbors who called prostitutes to our door after midnight every night , saying that someone at our apartment had called them. Many harassing door knocks. Random people banging on our door.

This is what life is like living in the ghettos. I believe they were targeting us because we were Asian. We weren't "one of them".

No. In my opinion, people care more about revenge and money than making the world better. It rubs people the wrong way for someone to commit a crime and then get help to be a better person. People want to see them suffer instead. That's why I always say, there is no such thing as a good person. Most people are only good if you treat them good. Even gangsters can do that.

I can see your point with non-violent offenders and agree that they should have a chance at rehabilitation. The problem with prisons is they don't separate the hopefuls from the truly horrible people. That makes it hard to actually be rehabilitated because not all the people there CAN be rehabilitated. Prisoners even kill other prisoners and corrections officers while in prison. Then there are those who are in for murder and paroled and then kill others on the outside. All due respect, I said zero about letting them free. As far as the rehabilitation bit, I know everyone can change. My mentor took a guy that barley missed death row and turned him into a great man. That isn't why I know everyone can be rehabilitated but that is one great example.

Even If I didn't know all people can be rehabilitated, I wouldn't discriminate on the basis of violent crimes vs nonviolent crimes nor violent people vs nonviolent people.

All that proves is that one thinking about oneself and not the people being rehabilitated.

I worked at UCI in Raiford, Florida for 2 years as an X-Ray supervisor and Lab Tech. The Unit was maximum security minimum risk. On occasion I was assigned the task of taking a bus load of parolees to the Greyhound Buss station in Starke, Fla. It was about a 20 minute ride. The state gave them a set of new clothes, 100 buck, and a bus ticket to anywhere in the continental United States. They all came back. When they were waiting for the pickup van their friends behind the fence would ask them when they could be expected back. Most of them said they would be back in a week because they did not want to miss the bridge tournament. 100 buck did not last long in 1974.

One of them told me that in the Florida Corrections System they had a warm place to sleep, 3 square meal a day, a chance for an associate degree from a local community college, a gym, entertainment room, and all the sex they could stand. We had a 97% return rate.

That was 1974. I also rode rescue in that county and had to transfer an inmate from UCI that had been stabbed in the left ventricle with a sharpened Tbone steak bone. Pericardial tamponade is a sad thing to watch. Systolic BP starts to drop as the diastolic elevates so the gradient between them keeps getting less until there is no flow. It would have taken very little to have kept him alive but EMTs in 1974 did not have the authority to make a small incision in the pericardial sac to allow it to drain. Bleeding into a confined space in that situation is terminal.

Depends. The bigger problem is the taboo and challenged someone faces AFTER they get out prison. They have a criminal record now which make them much less employable. So it’s harder for them to get an actual law abiding career. Their mug shot and record is easy to find with a simple Google search. Even if they are guilty of a much lesser crime their original arrest and criminal charges are public to everyone.

I also wonder about low level sex offenders. Not actually violent rapists and child molesters. But someone taking a public piss next to a schoolyard at midnight can be forced to register as sex offender.

You shouldn’t coddle crime. But there has to be a way to prevent young and/or first time offenders from getting caught up in the system.

Punishment is a form of tyranny , and fascism at it's core. I live in a broken social structure , and was once programmed to believe that prisons were a necessity , which was basically saying that the abuse of others was necessary for the good of others , but I later learned that goodness is that which is without abuse , and realized I was manipulated , and just like other types of manipulations out there , like the manipulative statement "no pain no gain" , because we all should exist pleasantly and comfortably. That idea went out the window many generations ago. For profit prisons became the norm many generations ago as well. It just funny that people deny that despite all the statistics showing that re-incarceration rates and through the room and it's been proven that people come out jail and prison better criminals then they where going in. We shouldn't scrap everything, just accept the truth and reform everything.

Heck I went to Job Corps and the roots of that program where in rehabilitating youth via giving them the knowledge and skills to live a normal life, once they ended up in the legal system. Expanding the program and opening up more locations would be a good first step. Especially in underprivileged areas. Because a lot of times all you need to do is show younger people is a better path to take and they will take it.

Prison isn't for rehabilitation. It's to discourage people from committing crime to begin with. If you can't be bothered not to commit crime, then you are denied the ability to participate in society by force. That's what prison is. Whether or not that is moral is an entirely different discussion.

Prison is “officially” intended for three things. Retribution, rehabilitation, and incapacitation.

But there are people who can be rehabilitated if in a prison where they are treated better. It's the hard core losers who can't be.
