Let's talk about gender equality, shall we?

Now first of all let me first state that

a) This is my first attempt at writing such a thing and

b) I am not some crazy feminist about to give the male gender a lecture although nor do I have anything against feminists.

So lets get to it. Yes fellow women it would seem in the past and even at this current point in time we have been shunned, degraded and sexualized by Men, social media etc. the list could truly and honestly go on.

You could say that as a women we have it tough:

• Pregnancy


• Periods


• Rape


• Physical abuse

So on so forth but even so I think it is time we stop to consider what men go through. they too suffer Rape, Physical abuse, while of course they cannot fall pregnant or have their period, they do however put up with objects accidentally hitting/being thrown at their unmentionables.

Lets not also forget that their was a time where men were forced to join the army, to leave their families and the comfort of their home for a war zone, a place of death and decay. Yes in time women were soon also allowed to see the battlefield but that happened due to their want to see such things, Men however were forced into it.

We speak of gender equality quite often and yet i have found that SOME people are quite two faced about it. How often is it we see the rape of men being broadcasted across the news? Not very often now is it? And why do we think that is? Let me give you a hint. It is NOT becasue it doesn't happen but more so the fact that men fear speaking of such a thing as they are afraid that as a man they will be seen as weak and unmanly.

For all you feminists out there who go on raves about how men won't treat you as equals. There is a reason for that. How many times have you seen or heard of males beating up other males. Its something quite common among men. Now my dear women how many of you's would push complaints if your husband/boyfriend/male friend laid a hand on you?

I would assume a great deal of you would. But you see if we want gender equality we need to learn to take the bad with the good. In all honesty im not sure anyone would women or man would truly be able to deal with such a thing. Many women want to be seen as equals to a man and yet when treated the way a man would treat another male they complain.

Please keep in mind that i am in no way saying violence is a good thing i am merely trying to show people that the concept of equality between a male and a female at the moment is invalid as neither sex are really ready for it.

So yes women have it tough, yes we go through a lot. But men have it just as bad they suffer the same things, if not worse.

The reason why boys shouldn't hit girls is because of the difference in physical strength. We often hear the phrase "pick on someone your own size," this being because it's petty to fight someone blatantly weaker than you. If you saw a grown woman hitting a young boy, she'd win because she is bigger and stronger than him, and it'd be especially bad since the boy cannot defend himself. Why do you think we have weight classes in wrestling? Because a scrawny boy fighting a heavier boy isn't fair. Physically, men and women are not the same, this is obvious. A woman will have to work twice as hard as a man to get the exact same physical fitness. Why? That's just how our bodies work.

Otherwise, I mostly agree with this take.

I understand also the obvious reasons as to why it is wrong for men to hit women it happens however that I have a friend who was in an abusive relationship my friend being male and his girlfriend now ex being obviously female. She was younger then him but even so she would constantly beat into him while he would sit idly by.
I do not see how that is fair. She had no reason to do it, she did it quite simply because she could not at times have her way.
But I do understand what you mean about size.

Is it fair? Hardly. But it's also not fair that women are automatically biologically weaker than men, which heightens the chance of physical abuse since they're not as strong. It's not fair that women have to bleed buckets every month because they didn't get pregnant. No, the way our bodies work just isn't fair. That's why I don't think gender equality should be used in the context of our anatomy. They're different, so they why treat them the same? Things like how men can't be emotional, women can't be abrasive, men can't care about fashion, women can't care about sports, those are the kinds of societal norms I'm interested in having a discussion over.

I agree with your point, but you forgot to say that if you're weaker than someone, don't punch them, cause you're gonna end worse. It's acceptable for a woman to hit a man because she's weaker and he is stronger, but when it's the other way around, it's not acceptable. Violence is violence no matter the size difference. And to be honest, a punch in the face, is gonna hurt even if she's weak.
We should stop with the double standards, that's what's hurting us, the fact that we accept one thing for one gender, but we don't accept it for the other (this goes both ways).

If you're weaker than someone, then the only true harm you can do is by using some sort of weapon. I've punched a guy in the face once when he had tried to touch my sister. It did absolutely nothing. Then he punched me in the cheek, and I very well lost consciousness. I didn't have any martial arts training under my belt, I couldn't defend myself or my sister (we're okay, though. Someone came to help.) On another occasion, my sister was wailing on a guy that rejected her. Was it wrong? Yeah, it was stupid. Was it acceptable? No. But she couldn't have hurt the guy if she tried, because one, he could've hit her a lot worse than she ever could. Two, he could've run a lot farther than she and gotten away.

I'm less concerned about violence in general and more focused on the end result. Should girls hit boys, not really. But a girl can't naturally do anywhere near the same amount of harm to a guy that he can do to her. Boys and girls are /not/ the same. Why wouldn't things be different for two things that aren't the same? (ran out of space.)

If a girl tries to hit a boy, he should stop her by grabbing her wrists or something and then report her to the police for assault. It's not really fair, but you'll get in a lot less trouble if you avoid further violence against someone weaker than you. If a girl tries to hit a boy with a weapon, then by all means he should do what he needs to do to stay safe. I think of self defense as any situation in which you protect yourself from someone who intends to do you harm.

Pregnancy and periods are the only things that I would say make things THAT difficult for women.

Everyone faces rape possibilities as well as other violence and emotionally damaging happenstances.

What people need to realize is that equality is NOT treating everyone the same. It is actually figuring out what someone needs and helping with that accordingly. For example, I am good with design and cooking, I am bad with lifting heavy things and math. My boyfriend is good with vehicles, math, and he is very strong, he is bad at putting words together to express what he means and has no sense of designs on paper. I cook for him (he bakes). I designed a logo for his company. He takes the garbage out and carries the big bag of dog food in the house. He changes tires on the cars and does our taxes. I play games to educate our daughter and build her vocabulary. We both teach her different ways to build with her blocks.

It's giving what you can, taking what you NEED. And learning a balance. Men and women ARE different. Some women are more masculine, some men are more feminine. This needs to be recognized as well within the whole equality movement. We can't have the equality that is desired without respecting one another.

That's likely because it seems guys only want to treat a gal like an equal or like another guy when it comes to violence. I don't see guys going around treating gals like a guy when she's promiscuous even though the slut double standard and hitting double standard use the same logic of 'it's easier for one gender so they should get away with it'. I don't see guys treating a gal like an equal when it comes to him doing his share of household/child are duties. Guys seemingly are only for equality when it comes to hitting gals or splitting the bills.

Different opinions. In my opinion going by statistics guys do not have it just as bad suffering the same things and most certainly do not have it worse. By statistics guys are nowhere near close to the opposite sex violence gals suffer.

Guys do not suffer domestic violence, rape, sexual harassment, sexual assault from gals the same rate gals suffer domestic violence, rape, sexual harassment, sexual assault from guys. The issues guys face tend to be perpetuated by other guys while the issues gals face are perpetuated by guys. That's a telling difference is my pinion.

But it's understandable to me that you think guys have it just as bad or worse. I tend to find most gals and gals think guys have it just as bad/worse because clearly the group whee it's a commonplace norm to use a derogatory insult like b*tch interchangeably for the general population has it oh so easy compared to the group seen and historically treated as superior.

From what I understand and correct me if I am wrong, statistics are recorded by the amount of complaints/cases that have been made acknowledged.
Now take to mind the pride most men feel.
Men aren't going to admit to whether they have been sexually harassed, assaulted or raped.
Partly because they want to continues upholding the vision of masculinity that society has placed on them and partly because they are ashamed.
So REALISTICALLY any statistics found on such matters are incorrect.

So realistically the seeming notion you're suggesting that there is this abundance of make victims by gals that evens the field is skewed. A lot of males do get raped or molested by females but guess what? If they report it, many people say things like''you must of have liked it.'' All the issues you mention are real. And I say: Feminism is the answer to those problems. Feminism (or at least the type of feminism people should be looking at, instead of judging us all based on radicals) does not fight against men, but rather it fights against sexism. Neither is our objective to have women treated as men. That would assume being treated as a man is normal, and being treated as a woman is anormal. What we want is for both women and men to be able to define who they are and how they want to be treated free of sex-based discrimination.

Interesting. I'll acknowledge that I as a man have strengths and weaknesses being a male. However, in the case of rape of male victims, there are a lot of overlooked factors behind them. For instance, many people often deny the fact that studies have proven that while REPORTED female rape and child molestation victims greatly outnumber male victims in statistics, only a very very few men and boys have ever report their sexual assault/abuse, thus male being much less likely to report as victims.

This is not to say that men have it harder than women and vice versa or that there are possibly more male victims than female victims but I'm just trying to be fair and balanced with both sides.

Very thoughtful take. I salute you. :) Pieces such as this give me much-needed hope for our generation. For years I wondered if I would ever find a woman who could handle the ugly truth about gender relations in America. Then I found my girlfriend. It occurs to me today that you might be another one. Yeah I agree. Mran have it just as worse. We all have it tough, sometimes just in different ways. I don't know about suffering more, we can't compare things like this. In some cases guys have it worse, in some cases women.

I think guys should step up and stop being afraid of telling about being sexually harrassed, because this will never end if you just keep quiet. Women have fought for years and we are no longer inferior human beings that should just stay in the kitchen. Now guys should speak up, you don't always have to enjoy the sexual attention you are getting.

Hmmmm, as a feminist I would like to point out that never have I ever said that men have it easy, there is many struggles to both genders. I want equality and I never expect different things from either gender. I go on raves about equality, I expect women and men to have the same right to hit each other IN SELF DEFENSE, outside of that violence is not okay, regardless of gender. If I do come across any people who are unjust or hypocritical I tell them to stop and think about what is wrong with how they are thinking. We also need to talk about what a feminist is, just because someone calls themselves a feminist doesn't mean that they are. Feminists fight for equality rather than against men. Just because a 13 year old girl on tumbler starts posting pictures that are against men and says she is a feminist does not mean she ACTUALLY is one. Everyone needs to stop over generalizing, it is idiotic to assume everyone in a group is a certain way based off of what a portion of the groups population is like. NEVER HAVE I EVER said anything against men when I am speaking of equality and I am indeed a feminist. Main point

This has definitely been a huge pet peeve of mine. When talking about equality, a lot of people will exclusively mention women's issues, but never men's issues. Every time I hear people talk about men's issues, they always seem to talk about it in this "man vs women" viewpoint. They usually make comments about men's issues as a response to feminism, and it annoys me how they miss the point of equality entirely. We should address the issues men face as well (or just human issues in general) instead of just focusing on only women's issues, and try to make the world a better place for everybody. I'm glad that you've made a take that addresses the double standard that many people have, and brought more awareness to everyone that reads this. Not many people address this. Thank you.

I try do address matters that I feel are only being seen from one side of the party. It makes me quite frustrated when all I ever see on the news is how women have been raped, abused etc, when I know for a fact that men suffer the same thing and yet society is either not very aware of it but even when the matter is brought to the light of day, some people tend to ignore and discard it as ridiculous.

Yeah, it frustrates me when people can't see the other side on issues such as this. It really scares me that there are people out there that don't get the help they need because they happen to be male, and nobody seems to realize that male or female, they are still a human being that feels pain just like everyone else when things like this happen. I fail to see the level of disconnect some people have when talking about this matter, and it really worries me how adament they and other people are about thinking that actual equality does not apply to a certain group of people (males/females) the same way. There's a reason why we call it equality. I am hopeful though that more people will step up and call out this double standard. We just need to keep talking about it, educate people, and raise more awareness for these issues. It's just nice to get this off my chest every once in awhile. Sorry if it took too long to write this, I am typing on my phone at the moment. :P

The world's only fair when everything is settled and under control. We forget our pretensions when chaos comes though. We're a bored world. There's no great challenges to undertake anymore so we nitpick at stupid things to keep people writing books and articles in magazines and keep people in politics and jobs. I think people fail to understand gender equality in it's most basic sense. It truly means that everyone--regardless of gender--should be afforded the same opportunities.

It doesn't mean that just because a woman hit a man, he should simply hit her back in retaliation. That's childish (and if you're about to ask why it's okay for women to hit a man back, more than likely, the woman is much smaller than the man. If the man is smaller than the woman, then I absolutely think he should defend himself). What it means is that he should be able to call the police and charge the woman with assault WITHOUT looking like he was truly the guilty party because he is a man.

There's a big difference. Anyway, I do agree that there are some things that men have tougher. Personally, though, it seems like the majority of their issues has to deal with an archaic way of living that men placed on society generations ago... and many guys can't seem to break away from that.

And that very rarely happens. In the same way that blacks are profiled negatively compared to whites, men are profiled much, much more negatively compared to women. So much so that white men are actually punished more for the same crime than black women are. Gender is by far the biggest factor in police abuse, followed by race.

Archaic way of living where Women virtually always get custody regardless of who is actually a more fit parent, where women who are convicted of the same crimes serve a fraction of the sentence of their male criminal counter parts (if they serve anything at all), where women can sue their employer simply because women make less money than men overall, where men are blamed for all of society's problems and treated like potential rapists? Where more and more men are discouraged from pursing higher education, and the solution to that? No boys allowed day at public schools!
