I think the best way to feel better is to accept that some people just won't be attracted to your body. And that is because of their personal preference. But that is some people, not all people.
Regarding diet, I'm new to it, but have been reading a bit, and tried out the slow carb diet (fourhourworkweek.com/.../), but felt a bit weird about eating so much animal meat. Then there is full paleo (https://paleoleap.com/paleo-101/) I also came across this (drhyman.com/blog/2014/11/07/pegan-paleo-vegan/), which I think looks really interesting.
The exercise advice seems to be to focus on intensity and strength training over long cardio sessions. The only dissent I've read here is from an elite distance running coach who recommends you lay a foundation with long, slow jogs.
Anyway, good luck, it's an interesting field :)
If you really want to gain weight then supplements could really help you out if you're having trouble eating the truck load you need.
You could use protein shakes with a carbohydrate matrix and then you should gain weight fairly easily

Oh, way. I can't believe a doctor would pass this off as Okay. NOT trying to be mean - but you remind of the prisoners at Auschwitz. In time, your metabolism will slow and you will gain. It happens to nearly all of us.
I'd suggest you begin working out routinely. With dedication, advice, proper nutrition, and a lot of hard work you can overcome genetics. Chin up, there's (real, not the Obama kind) hope!!!
