I remember when Carter cancelled all visas from Iran and prevented any new ones, except in the case of Iranians who opposed the regime of that time. (Obviously, due to your age, you do NOT remember this.) The action was part of an escalating situation around the hostage taking by Iran, not as any kind of "security" measure. Just for the record that's only temporary and is actually a smart move seeing how it's kind of hard to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys. Once security is up to par and we can better defend ourselves and help them we would let them come back in.
