Because man used to be the generic term for what we understand as homo sapiens. Women were wyfmen (wife-men) and men were something else. But over time they took over the word man to signify both male and human, while wyfmen turned to women.
and now men are men and everyone is men. she's talking about the present not the past. language changes a... thats not exactly a reason that words should not change. you are just illustrating they do change.
"HATE" is Much More Offensive. I do Not care to Use it. No need to be Politically Correct though. Now I am Hearing they are Telling us to Refrain from Using the Words "Boy" and "Girl." Watch out, Gag! Good luck and Great question. xx
There is a politically correct movement afoot that says we should address eveyone in a neuter general way so no more FireMAN or WorkMAN or MANkind. All jolly stupid but I suppose it keeps them happy.
hmm, im not 'offended' but i think it is illogical.
not sure why everyone is getting so emotional, since they are insisting it doesn't matter. quite the defensive crowd you have reached.. they seem quite offended.
in my opinion, it would be logical when referring to people that it is neutral term. doesn't matter if man used to mean everyone then switched bc it did switch. i do think growing up knowing you are a woman and referred to as man meaning all as well as seeing men referred to as man meaning man, has an impact. as if woman is an afterthought. plus its unnecessarily confusing. if you are reading about woman and men where 'all' are referred to as men but men are also referred to as men.,. not always clear if man is referring to people or a men. even professional aduktrscan
anyhow im curious all the guys complaining you have the audacity to ask his question, if tomorrow they woke up and they were referred to as 'woman' bc hat was the new terminology for all people, theyd not mind.
I know. I don't blame you, but you forgot MANipulate - you know how guys like to MANipulate girls, and MANifold, like why do you hate men? The reasons are MANifiold. What about that man who was a king long ago - OziMANias?
I don't think people, mostly guys, should have insulted you so much. You just asked a question. I don't really really agree, but I like your question! I love open minded things.
Ever heard the muted group theory? Well according to that theory, English language (like many languages) is made by men therefore it SPEAKS FOR MEN. Hence, it mutes the minorities, which includes: ethnicities, genders, socioeconomic status, etc.
You just can't get it yet.. Men don't really care one way or another about word , much less a law. were not built from words. We don't even care about pink down votes either , just does'nt change anything !!

It's not offensive, it's just the root of your language has strong masculine/feminine division like any other else in Romance language...
My native language is naturally gender neutral, for example the word for humanity and mankind has no hint of a "man", it's just one word for all.

I think this question is ridiculous. We are drowning in political correctness.
I don't find it offensive at all. No need to change what was done - re-writing history is a waste of time.
Plus, the word "man" used to be gender neutral until about a thousand years ago.

separate from that, if mankind was suddenly womankind and man was woman, do you think youd not mind?
@AriadneSky I don't care, I'm from Latvia and we have separate words for each - "vīrietis" (man), sieviete "woman", cilvēks "human".
uh.. no. mankind isn't gender specific. It represents all of humanity. If you're getting offended over that, you just need to chill
maybe her being offended or not offended is not the main point and there's more to think about if you were not afraid.
Oh yeah, wow. The word "human" offends me SOOOOO MUCH. In fact, every single word and name that contains the letters MAN consecutively offends me.
Get bent.

why is it anymore stupid than addressing people in gender specific terms?
I don't think you even tried at all with this one Anon. Troll better.
The word "woman" literally translated is "taken out of man"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Oh, no. We didn't just get to this point.
- It's not as big of a deal as you seem to want it make it.
Because god made man first...
... It's a lot of paperwork and burocracy to change that now...
My point is... you can't isolate portions of words to get other meanings, because then i can also extract way more things form x words.
what would be the point. if you were going to change these words logically it would not gave the word woman or man but a neutral term.

Asker Try explaining that to a son or two who you gave birth to and they turns out gay because of a word.
Oh my God you have way to much fucking time on your hands
OMG you used the word HOMO sapien. Don't you think that's offensive to homos too?
Nice point. I can't stand it when people read into shit like this too much.
