My friends and I (as a joke) sometimes call every white person we see a "gringo", for us is not offensive but it might be for you guys... what do you think? do you get offended by that?

Before you insult me lol, gringo means "green go", this is because when muricans came to mexico they were wearing green clothes, the mexicans would screamed "green go home" so they could let us free. It's nothing more than that, it's not an insult. But yeah, it could sound disrecpecful.

Most Spanish speakers use this word in a comical sense, some may use it as an offense but then, even the nicest word can be used in a derogatory sense depending on the speaker's intention and tone.
I have never heard of that word because in my life. So first thought that came to mind. It made me think that it was the name of some kind of creature in a video game. :D

Let me put it this way: it's not a word that should be used in polite company and it certainly doesn't sound like it has kind origins or is used kindly in the majority of instances. It may not exactly be offensive be it's certainly not polite.

this isn't true. Gringo the term was originally used in Spain basically to mean a non-Spanish speaking person (or stranger or wayfarer). so it really has no negative denotation. It basically just means foreigner.
It may not be a slur in Spain, but it is the US, primarily because it's used as one. The so-called "N word" is just an illiterate's bastardization of the Latin word "negro," but the context of its usage has made it an extremely offensive racial slur. Context is everything.
context may be so obviously it depends where you go. However, there is nowhere that the n-word isn't used to offend or disparage... Im a black man and when traveling in Puerto Rico I've been called a gringo. Obviously i'm not white and those same people have hung with me, shared drinks so it was only to refer to me not being a local... so yeah it is contextual. But gringo isn't a universally used offensive term

Yes, it's very offensive, because Hispanics never use it in a sweet, affectionate way. It's usually tossed around as an insult by Mexicans to try to annoy white people because there's a lot of racial animosity in parts of the US like Southern California that are close to the border. The only times I've heard that word used it was intended as an insult. I take it as a typical racial slur. It ain't a nice word, I'll assure you of that, and most white people who live around Hispanics understand that.
Huh... I do it in a sweet way, I have American friends so I call them gringos in a sweet way, but yeah... that's true, most don't do it with good intentions lol
You must live in a pretty white area for white people to not take offense. Honestly, I doubt white people in Minnesota or Vermont would care because most of them have never even seen a Hispanic person. I went to a 30% Hispanic high school, and there was more mixing between black and white kids that there was between Hispanic and white. There's lots of animosity where I live because everyone's competing for jobs and space. Most Hispanics who are first or second generation (3rd generation and beyond are just plain Americans) negatively stereotyped white folks and didn't care for us at all.
Well, in Tulum (I studied there for 3 years) there are many americans and europeans who have lived in mexico many years, their kids know about both cultures and they know we don't call them (some of us) gringos with bad intentions, we just do it because they're americans or white lol Actually, my friend in my pic is german and I call her "hitler", she calls me "mexicunt" and we never get offended. My friends are very flexible, I am too, we don't feel the need to start a fight for that kind of things.
By all the rules of offensive language it should be but I doubt most 'white' people care. Same is true of 'honkey' or a lot of other insulting slang terms used by non-whites to designate whites. The only ones which bother some white people are those originally used by other white people which were more based on being poor or ignorant than just on being white, like 'cracker', 'redneck', 'white trash'.
Well it is meant to be an insult to white people that don't bother to learn the culture and language. However, am I personally offended by the term? No. If anything I kind of deserve it. My Spanish isn't very good but I do try as much as possible when I realize that the person I'm trying to talk to doesn't speak English. It's only right to try to do my part to lessen the language gap when I can. If they're trying then I should too you know?
I've got 5 guys I work with on my farm and we they always call me gringo or puto and what not. I don't care cuz I call them names too and we're all still friends
Alright now I cal them gueros desavridos, flojos, putos, pendejos, since I work in construction and its al guys we al get along so we al call each other names al day, like "hey puto gringo pasame eso" no one ever gets offended
