I have been in the restaurant business since I was 16 and began driving. Have worked at the same place all this time. I started as a hostess, buss girl to server and on to bartender. I am now the senior manager which includes all hiring and firing, liquor purchasing and placing food orders after inventories are given to me by kitchen manager. I also still take a turn behind the bar during the busy times. We are located on the water on Siesta Key, Florida just outside of Sarasota with Dec through June being our very busy season with all the Snowbirds here. For the most part this has always been a fun place for me to work and have truly enjoyed meeting folks from all over the US, Canada and abroad. It is a fact, like it or not that sex sells. Yes how you look matters, but that can be removed from the equation with personality many times. The 6 bartenders, 44 servers and 4 hostesses we have will attest to that and it does greatly affect tipping. Personality and friendliness are the other biggie's.
We also find that different cultures have different idea's with tipping. Some come from places where no tipping is done (of course you are paying for that in higher food prices) and the servers are on salaries. Others are pretty much on the cheap side with tips (Hello Canada).
I believe that the two greatest factors at being very successful server in any moderately busy restaurant is appearance and personality regardless of gender.

I don't like having to tip servers! I feel like it's unfair, since it's not my fault they get paid low wages. I would just tip anyway because I'm scared they'll mess with the food and drinks. I've heard of severs and busboys giving dirty plates and glasses and spitting in the food of people who don't tip. If they're mad about what they get paid, they should work a different job or take it up with their boss, not the customer who can't do anything.
Otherwise no, I'd say women get more tips usually. The guys might get more depending on where you work, like if it was a sports bar...
No never! That's unfair. I only tip based on how good a job they did and I might throw a little bit extra if I truly think they'll need it or just to be nice and generous. I always tip, even if it's complete crap service, because I know how much the job sucks and they still deserve money. I'm just more generous if I think that they deserve it. The gender of the person doesn't matter to me at all, and I don't think that it should matter to anyone. I'm sorry that you have to deal with douche coworkers like that, that's really annoying. But I hope that this was helpful 🤗🤗
You know, that's really interesting because Mythbusters did a segment on tips vs. breast size. Setting up a test in a coffee shop, they found that men tipped much more when the barista had huge breasts (fake/augmented of course so that they could use the same barista). However, what was more fascinating was that women tipped even more!
I don't know what to make of it, but I've never heard of male servers getting bigger tips. That said, I'm not sure I've had a truly open discussion on this topic with the servers I've known throughout my life.
a servers gender has no bearing on how much i tip. i tip for quality of service.
do the male servers cover more tables in an evening than you?
do you work in a restaurant where more women patron the business than men?
from what i had always heard women typically made more in tips than men... but i could be wrong

Nope.
If the "dumb male" stereotype is anything to go by then guys would tip women more than men , but it seems it's not the case.
When I'm out dining with my friends my thought process towards tipping is
Was the service good?
Did the server provide good recommendations when I was asking what's on tap?
Was service fast?
I tend to tip the older staff more because they usually give more detailed recommendations. On top of that they tend to tell me about discounts if I pay with say... Diners Club or show my CAA card , etc etc.
Attractiveness really doesn't come into play for me personally.
Not sure about other people.I can tell you right now if the guys are getting better tips than you, then it's because they are giving better service. Server positions of all kinds are female dominated. Generally the highest paid Bartenders are female and Waitresses tend to make more than their male Waiter counterpart. There's also more lenience for Waitresses for mistakes than is given to Waiters. So yes there is an affect based on gender, but in this instance it is in your favor and you're not capitalizing on it. Now obviously the more attractive you are the easier the treatment is on you, but just by being female you have a positive bias towards you.
I tip based on the service I get. My wife has some specific food allergies. When we order food, she has to make sure those changes are done when they prepare her food and avoid cross contamination with other food and utensils.
On a whole, the guys do a much poorer job than the girls when it comes to that. It fries me, knowing she made it crystal when ordering to make sure they take a little more care when they make her meal, and we get it knowing someone didn't pay attention.
In my experience, girls get better and bigger tips from me, because they took the time to insure my wife was taken care of. On top of that, I usually find that girls tend to pay more attention to things like drinks and other minor needs during a meal. The male servers must be rocking it.
Is there a gender bias when it comes to tipping? From the male perspective, I say yes, very much so. I always tip female servers higher than male servers. I prefer their service, and I'm more satisfied with my entire experience when I have a female server. If the female is also playful or flirty, I will tip higher still. Bottom line, sex sells.
If you've got male servers out performing you in tips, then maybe you should try observing them to see what they do differently from you. Also, try using your feminine wiles. Women have the upper hand in the server world. Be bold, and own your strengths. Most present day knowledge would contradict this. Its rather well established that men tip more to women than they do to men and furthermore women tip near evenly by comparison. (See; Lynn, 1977).
But lets be honest. It isn't as if people in general want to suppress women. So this is probably a you-singular thing and there is some area for improvement. As for what exactly that would be, I never worked in the business. Can't tell.I don't like to tip because I don't get tips for doing my job that I already get paid for in the first place. The only person I generally do tip every time is the pizza delivery person because they use their own gas/car.
For restaurants, I would suggest making sure the food is prepared how it was requested before bringing it to the table. I think many times, the waiter/waitress tip is highly dependent on the satisfaction of the food, not necessarily their actual service. And many customers won't send the food back to get a replacement, because then the other people they are dining with will be done and want to leave earlier than them.I thought there were studies that showed guys tip females more especially if they like touch their arms etc. It's like a subconscious thing. In my country the witors get paid a full salary and the cost is included in the prices so I only tip a little bit. But I think I tip women slightly more ^^. But not a big difference. Also the wage gap is a lie just so you know.
Im a bartender and I make waaaay more in tips then the guy bartender does. Depends on preference for the customer I guess.
When I was younger I worked in promo modeling and I found that women had WAY MORE HIGH PAYING OPPORTUNITIES than men. Corporations want attractive women representing their products. Do good looking men have opportunities? Sometimes, but definitely not on same scale as attractive women (gay industry is different... but it's very small compared to the mainstream). Also why don't you talk to male strippers vs. female strippers and see who makes more?
There are so many variables that go into the service industry that can influence tips and payment. I personally tip on how well I was treated (male or female). I don't care about gender.
Also just please stop bringing up gender "inequality" in pay. People are sick of hearing about it. It was proved to be a myth a years ago.I tip a little more if I'm attracted to my server lol, but otherwise I tip based on how nice or hardworking they seem. I'm a server myself, so I'm very forgiving when it comes to slow service or mistakes.
But yeah, if I have a cute boy server, I'll give him a little more. All things equal, I tip them both the same, but since things are rarely equal, I tend to tip women more than men.
If you wish to increase your tips, don't just provide good service, but get your customers to smile. Flirt with them, especially the really old guys in their 70s and 80s, not sexual, just fun. If you make them feel happy, then they are more likely to make you happy.I generally do not tip and don't really have the idea of bringing extra cash in mind. If I do tip it's usually out of guilt and not because I really want to, so I give them maybe two to three dollars. If I happen to have extra cash I'd only tip well if I got extraordinary service and most of the time that is not that case. Most servers do the bare minimum.
I am a great tipper. But I noticed I tend to tip women I find attractive the most, followed next by men, the woman I am not attracted to at all get the base unless they really go above and beyond. I have to tweak that and tip based only on service down the road..
She or he is an employee of the business. Good service should be mandatory under the contractual laws between employer and employee if it isn't already
Good service should always be expected. About not a penny more than the true cost? Male or female, tittie jiggles or notIf people tipped more based on gender don't you think it would be the women getting bigger tips from desperate guys?
Personally I don't care about the gender of the server and I think tipping is BS: if people would tip all the people who ever did satisfactory work for them then they would spend all day calculating tips.I give the bare minimum when I tip servers because I don't care about restaurant workers that much. They are employees so I give them their 8 - 18% tip but that is it. If I am going to tip somebody I would rather tip a police officer or fire fighter or doctor or surgeon or humanitarian or professor. These people do stuff that benefits the world. Waitresses sell junk food.
By default , women will normally get more in tips , due to the simple fact that women are desired & are viewed by both genders as desirable , men are NOT desired !! On the flip side , the rudest & most surly staff in my own experience have been nearly always female , on a work night out I even asked one very snappy female staff member to NOT come back to our table , we were pleasant to her , no need for such hostility !!
I don't usually tipping at all. but sometimes I do. When I do I don't care anything but what kind of change I had for the payment. If I have coin worth of 5 I put 5, if 10 I put 10. But I don't tip more than 10. PLUS I don't tip at bigger restaurants, only at small boutique type ones.
It's you! I've seen many waitresses say they're great servers and be god awful! I worked with a few tonight. I've never made less than a male waiter or bartender. It's not just from men. I get more from women too and they get drooled over.
women usually make way more tips than guys. I was in the bar business for years so therefor I tend to tip at least 8 to 10 dollars and expensive checks ove 30 dollars I go about 30 to 40 % male or female.
I also know women make more tips during their periods.
