Server life: would you tip more based upon ones gender?

I have been in the restaurant business since I was 16 and began driving. Have worked at the same place all this time. I started as a hostess, buss girl to server and on to bartender. I am now the senior manager which includes all hiring and firing, liquor purchasing and placing food orders after inventories are given to me by kitchen manager. I also still take a turn behind the bar during the busy times. We are located on the water on Siesta Key, Florida just outside of Sarasota with Dec through June being our very busy season with all the Snowbirds here. For the most part this has always been a fun place for me to work and have truly enjoyed meeting folks from all over the US, Canada and abroad. It is a fact, like it or not that sex sells. Yes how you look matters, but that can be removed from the equation with personality many times. The 6 bartenders, 44 servers and 4 hostesses we have will attest to that and it does greatly affect tipping. Personality and friendliness are the other biggie's.
We also find that different cultures have different idea's with tipping. Some come from places where no tipping is done (of course you are paying for that in higher food prices) and the servers are on salaries. Others are pretty much on the cheap side with tips (Hello Canada).
I believe that the two greatest factors at being very successful server in any moderately busy restaurant is appearance and personality regardless of gender.
I don't like having to tip servers! I feel like it's unfair, since it's not my fault they get paid low wages. I would just tip anyway because I'm scared they'll mess with the food and drinks. I've heard of severs and busboys giving dirty plates and glasses and spitting in the food of people who don't tip. If they're mad about what they get paid, they should work a different job or take it up with their boss, not the customer who can't do anything.
Otherwise no, I'd say women get more tips usually. The guys might get more depending on where you work, like if it was a sports bar...
Okay here's the problem with something you just said. If every server just decided to quit and find another job then all these restaurants would be about to operate because they don'y have the staff. Second if mangers where to raise the pay then they would also raise prices of the food. So a dish can go up $10 or so where as a good tip to the server would only been around $8 depending on the total bill.
@Dark_Scorpio In other countries with restaurants there's no tipping, and they do fine.
You missed my point completely. I already know about how tipping works in countries. I was saying that if restaurant were to increase all server, bartender, hostess, and bus boy pay to minimum wage then they will have to increase the price of food to make up for that.
So what's the difference between paying more for a meal vs tipping a server?
@Dark_Scorpio That would have to be true, because why? If everyone else can do it worldwide so can the USA. And... it's different because I pay for the food itself, and I don't have to pay an extra, that rises with how much my bill costs. A 20% tip is really different when you have a $20 meal vs a $100 meal.
Okay a bit of apples to oranges there you you compare a $20 meal to a $100 one. A better comparison would be a $20 dollar vs the same meal that increased by say $10 in response to increase wages. So a 20% tips on the regular price $20 meal would be $4 vs paying $30 without a tip. See the difference there?
@Dark_Scorpio It's not apples to oranges at all, it could cost that much if you ordered extras or had more people with you. But it's a difference because I don't want to pay the staff, I want to give the money to the restaurant. They should pay their staff their full wages directly themselves.
Yeah it apples to oranges. I'm talking about one variable and that being a single meal for one person. You're adding it all these other variables into the mix. And even with those added the prices of a $100 meal would still increase with wage increase. So no matter would you'd still end up paying more for your food if wages were increased than you would if people tipped.
It amazes me how people who have no clue about the food industry try to tell the people who work in it daily how to run it.
@Dark_Scorpio If other countries can do it, why can't the USA? And just because you work somewhere doesn't mean you know how it runs or what the costs/expenses are. Especially on a business and corporate level.
Did I ever say the US couldn't. No! I was pointing out how if they were to then food prices would go up. And trust as an assistant manager I understand a lot more about an industry I have worked in and went to school for far better that you apparently can. You only arguments have been that other countries do it, that you don't want to spend money to tip, and that employers should increases wages. All while I have point out how it would cost more to do so both for the business and the customer, which you have pretty much ignored.
@Dark_Scorpio The other countries do have affordable food prices. And how can you know the finances if it hasn't been made common over here? Your training was for how things currently work. It doesn't sound like you know how overseas restaraunts work out their pricing
Because pricing of food is almost the same anywhere. You have to take in the cost of labor, ingredients, and etc. That's basically how pricing a menu works. So if you increase the cost of labor then you have to charge more for the food to make up for that. What is so hard to understand about that?
@Dark_Scorpio Because for the third time other countries don't require tipping and have great prices. You keep ignoring that point but it's true.
And guess what? Great prices means something different to different people. Point being that Just because it works a certain way somewhere else doesn't mean it will work the same in a far different place.
It just show you have not clue what goes into figuring out the prices for a menu. You can just tell a business to pay the employees more and expected things to just work out. No you have to consider factors that were in place before the pay increase. That's called running a business.
No never! That's unfair. I only tip based on how good a job they did and I might throw a little bit extra if I truly think they'll need it or just to be nice and generous. I always tip, even if it's complete crap service, because I know how much the job sucks and they still deserve money. I'm just more generous if I think that they deserve it. The gender of the person doesn't matter to me at all, and I don't think that it should matter to anyone. I'm sorry that you have to deal with douche coworkers like that, that's really annoying. But I hope that this was helpful 🤗🤗
You know, that's really interesting because Mythbusters did a segment on tips vs. breast size. Setting up a test in a coffee shop, they found that men tipped much more when the barista had huge breasts (fake/augmented of course so that they could use the same barista). However, what was more fascinating was that women tipped even more!
I don't know what to make of it, but I've never heard of male servers getting bigger tips. That said, I'm not sure I've had a truly open discussion on this topic with the servers I've known throughout my life.
Ya statistics say I'm wrong. It just depends on the customer, location, and type of restaurant.
I live in a area where it is mainly elderly. I feel as though the male servers can connect with the "old male" (usually the tipper) better than myself with topics I'm unfamiliar with such as war and football in the 60's.
Need to find another way to kiss there ass to start bringing in mo 🤑🤑
Thanks
a servers gender has no bearing on how much i tip. i tip for quality of service.
do the male servers cover more tables in an evening than you?
do you work in a restaurant where more women patron the business than men?
from what i had always heard women typically made more in tips than men... but i could be wrong

Nope.
If the "dumb male" stereotype is anything to go by then guys would tip women more than men , but it seems it's not the case.
When I'm out dining with my friends my thought process towards tipping is
Was the service good?
Did the server provide good recommendations when I was asking what's on tap?
Was service fast?
I tend to tip the older staff more because they usually give more detailed recommendations. On top of that they tend to tell me about discounts if I pay with say... Diners Club or show my CAA card , etc etc.
Attractiveness really doesn't come into play for me personally.
Not sure about other people.
Ya statistics say I'm wrong. It just depends on the customer, location, and type of restaurant.

I can tell you right now if the guys are getting better tips than you, then it's because they are giving better service. Server positions of all kinds are female dominated. Generally the highest paid Bartenders are female and Waitresses tend to make more than their male Waiter counterpart. There's also more lenience for Waitresses for mistakes than is given to Waiters. So yes there is an affect based on gender, but in this instance it is in your favor and you're not capitalizing on it. Now obviously the more attractive you are the easier the treatment is on you, but just by being female you have a positive bias towards you.
I worked in the restaurant industry for 3 years as a Dishwasher/Bus boy/"Whatever the fuck was needed" and have several bartender, waiter/waitress friends. The story is the same across the board. If you are female and do a decent job you make more in tips than a male that does decent. If you are an attractive female that does a decent job you make a rather large amount more than males that do the same amount. If you're attractive and good at your job you knock it out of the park and it's no contest.
I tip based on the service I get. My wife has some specific food allergies. When we order food, she has to make sure those changes are done when they prepare her food and avoid cross contamination with other food and utensils.
On a whole, the guys do a much poorer job than the girls when it comes to that. It fries me, knowing she made it crystal when ordering to make sure they take a little more care when they make her meal, and we get it knowing someone didn't pay attention.
In my experience, girls get better and bigger tips from me, because they took the time to insure my wife was taken care of. On top of that, I usually find that girls tend to pay more attention to things like drinks and other minor needs during a meal.
The male servers must be rocking it.
Is there a gender bias when it comes to tipping? From the male perspective, I say yes, very much so. I always tip female servers higher than male servers. I prefer their service, and I'm more satisfied with my entire experience when I have a female server. If the female is also playful or flirty, I will tip higher still. Bottom line, sex sells.
If you've got male servers out performing you in tips, then maybe you should try observing them to see what they do differently from you. Also, try using your feminine wiles. Women have the upper hand in the server world. Be bold, and own your strengths.
Most present day knowledge would contradict this. Its rather well established that men tip more to women than they do to men and furthermore women tip near evenly by comparison. (See; Lynn, 1977).
But lets be honest. It isn't as if people in general want to suppress women. So this is probably a you-singular thing and there is some area for improvement. As for what exactly that would be, I never worked in the business. Can't tell.
Statistics defiantly says I'm wrong. Haha So guess it's me lol.
Plus making money/working in a restaurant is like a game. There's always better sections. It comes down to kissing the managers ass to get the best section.
I don't kiss there ass. Possibly reflects in my service when someone comes in with a bunch of coupons haha.
Thankful this is not my career.
Note to self in future career: make sure you kiss the right
persons ass in my next job.
Thanks :)
I don't like to tip because I don't get tips for doing my job that I already get paid for in the first place. The only person I generally do tip every time is the pizza delivery person because they use their own gas/car.
For restaurants, I would suggest making sure the food is prepared how it was requested before bringing it to the table. I think many times, the waiter/waitress tip is highly dependent on the satisfaction of the food, not necessarily their actual service. And many customers won't send the food back to get a replacement, because then the other people they are dining with will be done and want to leave earlier than them.
I thought there were studies that showed guys tip females more especially if they like touch their arms etc. It's like a subconscious thing. In my country the witors get paid a full salary and the cost is included in the prices so I only tip a little bit. But I think I tip women slightly more ^^. But not a big difference. Also the wage gap is a lie just so you know.
Im a bartender and I make waaaay more in tips then the guy bartender does. Depends on preference for the customer I guess.
When I was younger I worked in promo modeling and I found that women had WAY MORE HIGH PAYING OPPORTUNITIES than men. Corporations want attractive women representing their products. Do good looking men have opportunities? Sometimes, but definitely not on same scale as attractive women (gay industry is different... but it's very small compared to the mainstream). Also why don't you talk to male strippers vs. female strippers and see who makes more?
There are so many variables that go into the service industry that can influence tips and payment. I personally tip on how well I was treated (male or female). I don't care about gender.
Also just please stop bringing up gender "inequality" in pay. People are sick of hearing about it. It was proved to be a myth a years ago.
I tip a little more if I'm attracted to my server lol, but otherwise I tip based on how nice or hardworking they seem. I'm a server myself, so I'm very forgiving when it comes to slow service or mistakes.
But yeah, if I have a cute boy server, I'll give him a little more.
All things equal, I tip them both the same, but since things are rarely equal, I tend to tip women more than men.
If you wish to increase your tips, don't just provide good service, but get your customers to smile. Flirt with them, especially the really old guys in their 70s and 80s, not sexual, just fun. If you make them feel happy, then they are more likely to make you happy.
I generally do not tip and don't really have the idea of bringing extra cash in mind. If I do tip it's usually out of guilt and not because I really want to, so I give them maybe two to three dollars. If I happen to have extra cash I'd only tip well if I got extraordinary service and most of the time that is not that case. Most servers do the bare minimum.
I am a great tipper. But I noticed I tend to tip women I find attractive the most, followed next by men, the woman I am not attracted to at all get the base unless they really go above and beyond. I have to tweak that and tip based only on service down the road..
She or he is an employee of the business. Good service should be mandatory under the contractual laws between employer and employee if it isn't already
Good service should always be expected. About not a penny more than the true cost? Male or female, tittie jiggles or not
If people tipped more based on gender don't you think it would be the women getting bigger tips from desperate guys?
Personally I don't care about the gender of the server and I think tipping is BS: if people would tip all the people who ever did satisfactory work for them then they would spend all day calculating tips.
I give the bare minimum when I tip servers because I don't care about restaurant workers that much. They are employees so I give them their 8 - 18% tip but that is it. If I am going to tip somebody I would rather tip a police officer or fire fighter or doctor or surgeon or humanitarian or professor. These people do stuff that benefits the world. Waitresses sell junk food.
By default , women will normally get more in tips , due to the simple fact that women are desired & are viewed by both genders as desirable , men are NOT desired !! On the flip side , the rudest & most surly staff in my own experience have been nearly always female , on a work night out I even asked one very snappy female staff member to NOT come back to our table , we were pleasant to her , no need for such hostility !!
I don't usually tipping at all. but sometimes I do. When I do I don't care anything but what kind of change I had for the payment. If I have coin worth of 5 I put 5, if 10 I put 10. But I don't tip more than 10. PLUS I don't tip at bigger restaurants, only at small boutique type ones.
It's you! I've seen many waitresses say they're great servers and be god awful! I worked with a few tonight. I've never made less than a male waiter or bartender. It's not just from men. I get more from women too and they get drooled over.
I have served for a long time and I am starting to realize I don't kiss there ass enough. I just can't bring myself to do it. The clientele I serve is pretty unique 🙄I just can't with coupons and people thinking they can get everything for free. Could possibly mean I need a new job This post defiantly helped lol
Good thing this isn't my day job.👍
I'm sarcastic asshole. I could never kiss ass. It's not my nature.
But people are draining so maybe it is.
women usually make way more tips than guys. I was in the bar business for years so therefor I tend to tip at least 8 to 10 dollars and expensive checks ove 30 dollars I go about 30 to 40 % male or female.
I also know women make more tips during their periods.
Have you noticed that?
yep. i have a system by which I tip, which always ranges between 10 and 50% of the bill. Good service gets you up to a max of 40%. Being an attractive woman is the only way to get that extra 10%.
Tips are not in the culture where I live... It's alright to leave a small tip if you're in a restaurant, but anywhere else it's just weird... and a bit awkward.
What kind of restaurant are you working at?
Lol ladies always get tipped more by male customers!
Maybe your service isn't as good as you think it is.
I tip people based on the quality of their service
HAHAHAHA yah, cause the unequal pay myth has something to do with this.
Jesus Christ, what a whiner. See, that's the attitude that won't get you any tips.
Everyone says they wouldn't, but I will be completely honest. From my 6 months as a bus boy before moving up, I noticed girls actually tend to get more tips.
I tip the same amount for both genders. For me it comes down to if they did a good job or not, not of they have a penis or a vagina :P but that is just me.
I tip both genders if you get my drink without letting me wait then he or she will have a tip for sure.
I tip the same if not women more especially if its busy in the place, i dont deduct based on shitty service eirther i mean shit, its a hard job. Also i tip women a bit more if they seem stressed like if their hands are shaking red eyes etc. If a dude seems stressed fuck em he's gonna have to suck dat shit up and take my normal 30 percent.
Actually when i use to do a bit of waitressing the girls and i got tipped way more then the guys, especially from men anyway.
I don't know why it's reversed where you are tho:(
Never heard of that one before.
I tip the exact same, regardless of gender.
I don't tip full stop for the same reason their employers don't pay them a bonus or extra tip to their wage. Its up to their boss to give them a bonus for providing good service or working extra hard.
@dalnotit They're not entitled for me to give them a tip and be judged for it if I dont. If I feel like giving the waiter/waitress a donation whether its poor or good service that's my money and choice. Other than that, they should be getting paid the correct wage for whatever service they offer because if they were getting paid the correct wage they wouldn't need to rely on tips. If you want your employees to provide a GOOD service to the customers then the boss should provide a good wage and not have the waiters beg for the extra tips since the employer rather pocket the money because that's slave labour.
@dalnotit Well they're doing their job which is serving customers so if they want customers to come back again then make sure its not bad service which only hurts the business. Other than that they should just do their job and serve me which is really all I ask for really, its them who treat us like a supreme guest.
Cool, just be sure to tell your server that immediately after you sit down, so they can make the choice to either bend over backwards to either make sure you do pay them, or spend their time and energy on their other tables who they know will tip.
If you're curious what serving is like, just imagine you're hosting a dinner party with at least 20 guests, all sitting in different rooms, and nobody can get anything for themselves. Be sure to give table 13 their napkins they asked for, get refills for your party of 10, take table 20's food order, drop the check off at table 10 and offer dessert, check on table 12 who just got their food, and go hurry and greet that new table who just sat down. And if anything is wrong, whether it's your fault or not, you risk not getting paid by that table.
Yes, in a perfect world, our employers would be the ones to pay our wage, but for now, this is how it is. And by not tipping, you're taking advantage of the system at our expense.
That is all :P
We don't have tipping here in Aus, but when I was in the states, gender did not come into play at all.
We just tipped based on good service.
Gender has no relevance on my tip. However, if he's a good looking waiter let's just slap on a little extra lmao
Hahahaha
I would tip more depending on service quality and whatnot. That is if I have money. https://i.imgur.com/txsZQoF.png
Different people tip differently. When 18 year old me worked a tipped job--food delivery for Ray's NY Pizza and Bar--women in the 20-30 range tipped me the best. Men, women older than that, all tipped crappy.
I give girls a better tip. I think a woman would do more good with it than a guy. A guy will probably just go out and buy drugs, while a girl is more likely to spend it to help support her kids or something. Not always the case though.
I tip based on service, not gender. I don't think the fact you're female has anything to do with the amount of tips you're getting. Maybe you're doing ok, but the male servers get the rich customers or they're just better.
My guess is women get better (more) tips then the guys do? I try not discriminate that way. Same no matter the gender.
We don't tip in my country and why should we? The cost of the meal should help pay towards it
If anything i'd say women probably get more tips out of men trying to impress them.
Never. I would tip more if they provided exceptional service.
i tip better when they are more enthusiastic and don't take forever
I tip based on how hard they try to not murder me in the restaurant.
I tip both genders. But I do tip girl's more sometimes it depends on the attitude and attentiveness
No.
But I used to work with a guy who, when we went out to eat, would ask the host/hostess if we could get a table with a waitress instead of a waiter. He loved talking to women.
Id have thought women would make more? Maybe they all think that so want to help the guys out more or they are just better waiters?
Personally if i want on a date i may tip a male waiter more incase the girl i was with got jealous but with frends a female one more.
Though I might also be more likely to think the male waiter was struggling more but I may be more likely to think he was a dick than her a bitch not that i generally think that its just maybe girls are more subtle if they dont like you much?
Tips aren't as big here though.
... no, I just care about how nice and good they are at their job. Anyone who says otherwise is just being a dick.
I always tip my servers well, but yes if she's hot, nice, and a bit flirty you bet she's getting that extra 5%.
Nope. I hate the idea of tipping, but whoever personality I like, I do tip nicely though. I don't care if they're male female other.
I tip based on service.
Friendly, always coming by and see if I need anything or refill my drink
That's what guarantees a great tip, I always tip well.
Honestly for me it doesn't matter on gender they'll get a better tip the better the service is
On average, I thought that guys would tip female servers more than male ones.
It's gag. Do you think guys here will believe you about what you said? Lol
Most guys here think women win in everything.
Well "some" female bartenders might get more tips then other females because possibly their whores & give extra to guys lol disturbing.
No. I tip based on service. If the server is rude, i still tip but not as much as if he or she is nicer
iirc the myth busters did this and found that girls with bigger tits got more tips. It on youtube if you want to watch it.
I tip based on my service.& If they bother me every 2 minutes asking how everything is or not. Every once in awhile but not every 2 minutes. Its annoying.
I tip based on service not gender, ethnicity or race.
I tip 20% across the board unless the service is bad.
I tip on the service i receive not by the gender. Thou i do admit to like females
over males.
