It's my face, if I feel like smiling I will; if I don't, I won't.
I've had random strangers (grown up men) tell me to smile... It always felt creepy and weird.
I heard about women getting offended by a man asking them to smile and I thought, omfg... Really? Get over yourself if you think that. It's not like they said,"Shut up, smile, and look pretty for me."
Those people are SJWs. Nobody likes them, they complain about every little thing, and it’s stupid. When you get around the Internet block, you’ll learn that when they call things “sexist” or “racist” they’re typically crying wolf.
Men are also told to smile. Just as they also have Beauty standards and expectations in society.
It's an annoying thing to say to someone, especially if they are in a bad mood but to call it objectification is fucking stupid. I feel like its just a buzzword people attach to things to make them sound worse than they actually are.
Nope, i don't think so. But i might tell girls in cute way
i like to see that pretty smile of yours but i wouldn't say
it in a mean way cause that wouldn't be right of me to do
now if i am wrong i do apologize for my mistake.
I have been told by people, "smile more, it makes you look prettier," as if that's the only thing that matters. So yeah, I do think it's a form of objectification.
You're merely Miss understanding, I don't mean to make it the sexual thing, they just mean that it makes you seem more approachable
@TheLittleIKnow and you're misunderstanding me😊 I don't mean sexual either. I mean a girl having to be pretty all the time. "it'll make you look pretty" "wear makeup but make it natural or else it's too much" "girls have to shave their legs or else it's gross". These are all stemming from the same concept; women have to look pretty.
How on earth is that objectification?
@ajijjj How on Earth is it not? Now I'm not saying smiling is objectification, point blank. In my scenario it is, but if someone is taking a picture, for example, and we're told to smile, that's not. It all depends on the scenario.
@RaWr_ImMa_DiNo you're going way too deep into it though. What's wrong with a girl looking pretty? Its only better for herself, because it means she cares about her appearance and tries to maintain herself. Same with a guy, wouldn't you want him to also maintain his appearance also a lot of the times?
@ajijjj honestly, a lot of the time I don't feel like caring. I don't feel like wearing makeup a lot of time. I don't feel like shaving my legs, it makes them itchy afterwards. And maybe I just don't feel like smiling. I want to smile when it's authentic, not just to make myself look pretty. And honestly, no. I would want a guy to wear what he wants wear, maintain himself how he wishes, and he could also not smile when he doesn't feel like it. It's not a girl thing, it's being a "being really to yourself" thing.
I mean ya i guess it is up to you, but if you live in the west then you shouldn'treally have to worry about it. What country do you live in?
@ajijjj I live in U. S.
Ok so, what i meant was that if you live in the west, then at least you're able to look how you want without being judged as much as a lot of other countries.
@ajijjj not necessarily, but I see what you mean.
No, it isn't objectfiying to tell someone to smile, but it is annoying and bothersome as hell. Whenever someone tells me to "smile more", I literally feel like telling them to go screw themselves...
i've also been told to smile more and it's something i never understood, because it's like... why should i smile for no reason? people are going to think i'm crazy lol
It can be a form of objectification, depending heavily on the context. A lot of things CAN be objectification in a certain context. This one sounds like it's objectification to me.
Does Anyone recall "smile bitch" ? I'm not sure whether to find that offensive or not. Naturally it's good to smile but not everyone who is happy smiles.
It's not sexist, not offensive, not harassment and not a problem.
Is telling guys to say more than just hello and to smile on their dating apps a form of objectification? 😛
I feel like as a young woman telling other women to smile, it's literally because I think they look prettier/cuter when they smile, but I can see how some would take offense to that.
How about when all genders in the service industry are forced to smile to live? I think Brie Larson is right about not smiling for the role but the article is bullshit.
its just weird and annoying. if other bigger groups of guys were telling u to smile, u would feel some type of way
I rarely smile , and the vast majority of women round my way have very stony / scowling faces. Nobody has any business demanding smiles from anyone
I think a superhero is usually more wooden, since they don't have time for funnybusiness. With the exception of a few comedic personalities, superheroes usually take their job seriously.
But I don't think the criticism is objectification.
There’s nothing wrong with smiling. Studies show that smiling actually makes you become more happy
All I know is I wouldn’t walk up to a guy and tell him to smile. Depends on the meaning behind it I guess
Just my opinion from the title itself, it's been proven that even fake smiling causes you to be happier, much how things placebo effect works
The world has turned into a political correct mess where whatever you say you are going to upset someone.
Here's a quick test to see if asking someone to smile is the objectification of women. Have you ever asked a guy? Yes? then get over yourselves, ladies; it's not about your tits. :P
Anybody who says a smile is sexist is fucking retarded. Also, fighting objectifying women is dumb, considering women objectify themselves far more than any man ever will.
The conversation here is very, very interesting indeed. I'm still new here, but this is why I like GAG so much. Very interesting topic.
The thing that concerns me the most is the idiotic ~25% of people who said yes. I get told to smile all the time because when I'm not smiling people think I'm angry. I just have that look when I'm not smiling.
FUCKING hell how pathetic is someone mentally to take being told to smile as anything more than just basic advice or a compliment. If you tell a man to smile is it objectifying? NO so it isn't the other way around either
Any human that smiles becomes attractive. I am sure it was out of line for them to ask her to smile while she was portraying a character she deemed fit. It would have been a different story if she was told personally.
I'm always told to smile as well. If you're being objectified, then so am i.
I don’t see women telling men to smile. So, yes it is a form of objectification but it’s not as severe as other gender issues we’re facing right now. It still is a form of objectification
you'd be surprised at how much men get told to smile. get your head out of your ass woman, not everything revolves around trying to oppress women.
Did I say that everything revolves around female oppression? No?
Then stop putting words in my mouth. You just embarrassed yourself, “woman”
check again sweetheart YOU just embarrassed yourself.
How? I expressed a fact. It is objectification. A minor form of it, but still is objectification.
If your genius 15 year old self can’t see that, I pity you.
It’s okay. At your age, kids believe they know everything. You’ll see how badly you’ve humiliated yourself later on. :)
you're still young so there's hope you'll realize how you're the one that's been embarrassed. Age ain't got nothing to do with wisdom and knowledge sweetheart, it's all about how you develop and the anatomy at which your brain matures, if you didn't know that then I truly pity you.
Yes, and maturity occurs at age 25. I’m 24. Closer than a dumb 15 year old.
Seriously, I’m done arguing with kids. This is too sad. All I know is that one can never reason with stupid teens
Even if it is, if you want to erase all your femininity, no one is going to be attracted to you. It's your choice.
me and my mom both get told to smile a lot because we both have resting bitch face. it gets annoying
2 girls said that to me like 2 months ago, it happens to guy to 🤷♂️
How helping a woman be more attractive overall, considered "objectifying" or "harassment"? That's ridiculous.
I can see how it would be annoying but OBJECTIFICATION?
They say withdrawing from people makes you dangerous. But I'd say that discovering how people think is making me pretty f*cking dangerous.
Sadly, I have to admit that I actually lost interest in a girl because shortly after I got to know her, she somehow stopped smiling :/
And since that I seem to only crush on a girl when I see her smile...
I don't feel objectified if someone tells me to smile. I feel annoyed because I'll smile if I want to.
No, unless the guy is acting like a jerk/pig, it's not sexist. This is just another extremist feminist/sjw article. Like most things it CAN be sexist but usually isn't.
CONTEXT matters when taking into account the reason behind a comment.
As an actor, I would hope she would be open to direction, without crying sexism.
Telling women in general to smile can be patronising.
i tell guys to cheer up too and im not gay so dont see it as objectification at all.
when someone tells me i should smile . hasn't figured out yet i am not interested in them .
At the end of my internship my supervisor told me I should smile more because I guess I outwardly didn't seem excited about projects.
It's good advice. If these women want to shoot themselves in the foot thinking it's liberating then go ahead.
This stupid SJW crap is going to guarantee a red wave in November and 2020. Keep at it stupid libtards.
Some don't like it even if it's not that deep. I don't tell anyone that for that reason some get mad about it. I'd tell my brother to smile if he looked pissed or sad
It depends... if it's "a pretty girl like you should smile" on the street, then... kinda? But if it's "Don't be sad, show me that smile of yours" then no.
Especially if you are sad, then you give the most pained smile, like
c1.staticflickr.com/.../3520568394_091d7a9391.jpg
And you have never told a guy to smile? Or told a guy that he looks creepy by not smiling?
I think it's asinine and ignorant. Not to mention the assumed familiarity to tell a complete stranger to smile. I vote for telling them off.
It's not that deep, sure it's annoying if a stranger tells you to smile but I don't think its objectifying
People have become fake and gay that's why they keep whining about made-up shit. You think Genghis Khan had time to consider the gender disparity in his marching columns? smh
Apparently talking to any woman for any reason is objectification, sexism, and oppression.
Yes. People are always telling me to smile more it's clearly sexism.
lol 😂 I don’t know. When someone tell me to smile I get mad 😠 lol 😂
I'm pretty sure you're the only person to have ever wondered about this before.
objectification my ass.
dudes whenever you encounter words like "triggered, objectification, opression, etc" dont hesitate, just fck run
Its hilarious that the ugly girls all voted: Yes, telling women to smile is just another form of objectification
XD Oh my god. Captain America looks so dumb.
I wouldn't go to the extent of calling it an objectification.
While it is a lot more effective to actually try and make a girl smile, simply telling her to smile isn’t objectification on its own.
Eh?
I am a guy and women have often told me to smile were they objectifying me then? Or is this a woman's only objectification?
"Objectification" has joined "oppression" and "misogynistic" in a growing list of words I can no longer take seriously on the Internet.
It's a form of mind your own business, like saying she wears too much make up.
No but it is definitely rude and sexist if the only reason you're saying it is because you think women in particular ought to look happy to appease your expectations of them.
