I want safety and security as much as the next person, but once it starts to violate religious rights, a very important right that the United States was founded on, it paves the way for other rights to be violated, for the sake of safety and security. I have nothing against people's beliefs and Muslims. However, personally i'm against Islamic outfits like these in Western societies. We have our own values and principles over here. Freedom of will that western society provides should not be abused by interfering it's image and cultural integrity. It's not too complicated to understand.
The worst is that different areas like Military and business owners are forced to change their own very dress codes and principles in favor of Muslims and that's bad. Westerns should not change their own lifestyle to suit the rest. When you walk into a new environment, this is your duty to blend it. I don't see how an item of clothing that covers the face completely will fly in the 21st century. Facial recognition is everywhere now whether we realize it or not. This sort of surveillance is only going to increase and become more sophisticated.
While I'm not a huge fan of this sort of surveillance it could also provide us with a bit a convenience. Instead of standing in line to buy something, an in-store camera could use facial recognition identify you immediately, and then automatically charge your account with whatever items you walk out of the store with. How then could someone with their face covered be identified? We would have to have separate rules for them or require them by law to follow the same rules as everybody else.
If hypothetically Muslims became the majority in the west it could result in them having separate rules they must abide by. We already do this to some extent in the west and they are a very small minority. In the United States, a doctor performed 600 circumcisions on girls and it never made the front-page news. In the U. K. there are Muslim gang rapes everywhere and if you report these rapes on social media it's considered a hate crime and you can be arrested.

Most of the people that have commented before me seem to be living outside of Australia. I live in this beautiful country and I love how diverse and understanding it is! I see hijabs, niqabs and burqas sometimes when I go shopping and I personally have no problem with any of them. Some of these women choose to wear these veils because they feel comfortable. I’m not sure why this comment was addressed towards me. Although I do agree with many of your points. There is a lot of hypocrisy in western culture, and nationalism has caused a lot of hurt for a lot of people. I don’t know if I’d say Donald Trump and George Bush are as bad as Hitler, but they’re certainly not stellar role models. Especially not when it comes to how they’ve treated people of different backgrounds than theirselves. I also agree that Muslims in general have suffered from terrorist attacks far more than any other ethnic or religious group. Also 9/11 may have only damaged 3 building but it resulted in over nearly 3,000 deaths and the severe injury of 6,000 others. All of them innocents. It is widely acknowledged as the event that started the war in Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda struck against the US. A country that had been barely involved in the Middle East. The US responded. Did that response go to far? In some cases yes. The US has done a lot of good in the Middle East. We have also done a lot of bad and made a lot of mistakes. I don’t feel I or anyone else truly has the knowledge or authority to weigh the good against the bad and decide what wins out. All I know is that history is as it is, and we can’t undo what’s been done. All we can do is learn from our mistakes, and teach ourselves and our children to do better. As for Israel, that’s a different beast entirely. I’m aware that there is a lot of bad blood between Israel and its neighbors, it’s been brewing for hundreds if not thousands of years. There have been mistakes and atrocities committed on all sides, not just Israel’s. And I think a lot of their past actions bear further review. What must be understood however is that Israel is a nation surrounded by enemies. There are bombs and mortar fire being lobbed over its borders on a daily basis. I don't care myself, but if Muslims or anyone in general can't see why some people might then there's a problem. People could easily take advantage of those niqab or w/e, not Muslims taking advantage, anyone could dress up in those and be a terrorist. I'm American, and the US constitution guarantees freedom of religion (or lack thereof) in the first amendment. However, masks and face covers are illegal in most jurisdictions with certain exceptions, so I wonder if ts is a religious consideration for that. I know face covering is usually illegal for security reasons. I understand that.

Showing your face to authorities when needed does not require a ban. In my opinion, if a woman really wants to wear them, and it's entirely HER choice and she's not being forced to wear it by her husband, father, or anyone else, I don't see anything wrong with it. They're not hurting anybody by wearing them.

However, if they are living somewhere other than the Middle East, especially the West, after they've been there for a while, they do see that society in the West will not force them to wear it, and legally they will not be punished for not wearing it. With that said, they may be punished by the men in their family, so it's tricky. What might happen is if they are being forced to wear them by, say, their husbands, and wearing them in public is banned, then they simply won't be allowed by their husbands to ever leave the house.

Its not religiously required but still you can't force someone not to wear anything they want, from a security standpoint you can require them to show their faces at check points and produce their ID's but other than that it would be oppression.
if you are wearing bombs you are obviously not going to wear them on your face, but hide somewhere where people don't look. and if a non muslim terrorist wears the bombs, believe me they will hide their face under some kind of mask or at least a large hat. this ban would be useless.

I think burqa and niqab should be banned for security reasons, headscarves can stay. If people don't like it, they shouldn't go to western places in the first place and stay where they can wear those.

The United States was founded on the basis of religious freedom. To ban the niqab and the burka would be unconstitutional. I also hate the idea of the government controlling what clothes people wear.

The point was that if someone would get into a public institution with something on the security would come to check on them and ask them to uncover, but if a woman with an Islamic face cover would do the same you wouldn't get the same reaction. Should they be allowed to do stuff others aren't because that is their religion?

Most public places requiring security, and certainly any who have people wandering around to make sure that people are dressed in a certain way, have metal detectors. So they wouldn’t get a weapon through, if that’s what you’re worried about.

I think everything that has to do with Islam should be banned. I live in a country that does not recognize Islam as a religion, but I believe it should take a step further and outlaw it.
If it severely obscures the face, you are asking if it should be banned. Veils cover the face. Hoodies can easily cover the face. Hats that are big can be used to cover the face, say with the brim you can keep your face invisible to cameras if you angle it right.

It's not my place to say. I certainly disagree with it. I don't like it, and I'd never wear one. But it's the land of freedom supposedly. It's prejudice to ban them. Is it a safety hazard? It can be. Should we let that control us? No. Anything can be a safety hazard. White males shoot up schools more often than any other gender or ethnicity combo. Should we ban them from schools?

So you want to do just like people did in past, e. g. they banned opened hair for women in Iran. Any such act that is against the personal freedom is not healthy. If you do that, you end up with extremism. Then a new force will be born to fight against that. Try to find solution rather banning anything.

They cannot be victims of their own ideology. Keep in mind: muslim terrorists are the "truest" muslims (sometimes called "salafist", e. g. referring to first 3 generation of muslims that were called "salafi", who were one of the most brutal people in human history), doing exactly what Mohamed was doing. It's even good their got the true taste of their own religion. Islam is cancer.
If you are a muslim yourself, perhaps you should do a closer research what your "prophet" was doing (by using oldest biographers, not nowadays apologists: by "oldest" I mean the most reliable ones who were the earliest islamic scholars and therefore knew quite well actual origins and actions -- Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) and then try to find a difference between him and some ISIS / Taliban / Al-Qaeda / Boko Haram / Al-Nusra and thousands of others.

Why do we need to see people's faces at all times? If you really care about "security" due to not seeing people's faces then why aren't furries included in this post? Or anyone wearing a costume in public?
Everything that covers a persons face and isn't for safety reasons (wearing a helmet during driving motorbike) should be forbidden. That includes religious coverings.
