Niqab is a clothing that covers whole of the body, including the face. It is banned in public in countries like Denmark, Belgium, France, Latvia and Norway.
Should it be banned in public, what is your opinion?
My opinion: I am not against covering hair with hijab which leaves your face open, I even have friends who wear it. However, niqab covers your whole face and it is impossible to identify who's wearing it. Under that clothing there could be a terrorist, a man, a criminal... Also it is a sign of extremism even many Muslims don't approve. I think it is dangerous and therefore it should be banned.
From the Islamic perspective, women are only supposed to be wearing the hijab, The niqab is pushing it and isn't even part of the religion.
However, if a women wants to wear it, sure, it's her choice, but she should also be understanding of safety laws. Everyone needs to have a visual profile for ID and safety checks.
No I guess not as long as they're not breaking any laws people should be allowed to wear whatever they want to wear. However, it is pretty unsettling being around someone and you can't even see their face. Especially if you're having a conversation with someone and you don't know who you're talking to.
Yes, ban it. Morocco also banned it, and Turkey and Syria banned it previously in government institutions. Mexico also banned it. Morocco and Mexico banned it for security reasons.
There's nothing in the Quran that says a woman must cover her face.
I think it wouldn't work in a country like Syria, since majority of the country are religious fanatics. Only some Alawites aren't and they are the minority.
Headscarves were banned in military, schools and public corporations when Republican Party came to power in Turkey, that was ages ago. Right now we are slowly becoming like Syria or Iran but I don't believe this transformationcould be completed.
Syria is relatively secular, compared to Saudi, Iraq or Iran they are but compared to Lebanon, Azerbaijan Turkey they aren't. The most secular Arab country is Lebanon.
I rarely see people who wear it here, and they often speak foreign languages. However hijab is common. It is also uncommon in North Africa, as you've stated.
I was on a tour of Istanbul with my dad, in 1995, and I remember the guide specifically pointing out a woman who was wearing it, and saying that it was un-Turkish, and that the people who wore it were anti-democracy, and agents of Iran. He was pretty annoyed by it.

The Constitution only protect religious expression if it's not a threat to public safety, and it's a sincere belief. That's why something like smoking cracks isn't protected.
Not if it's a threat to public safety. For example, hiding your cars license plate isn't consider free speech because you don't have a right to privacy in public.

You either completely ban things covering your face or you don't.
The issue is, people wear things covering their face for very normal reasons as well. They cover up their face when it's cold, I do it all the time. You can basically only see my eyes and a bit of my hair.
But then there is this stuff, which in practicality basically is the same thing.
Furthermore, eventually facial recognition is going to be widespread. So then a ban of facial wear could be used in a way to enforce people being identified for the authorities, which could be argued to be an invasion of privacy.
If you're only going to ban the burqa or down the road the hijab, then you're on a path of destroying freedom of religion and freedom to express it.
I don't know yet. On one hand, I get the argument that it makes sense that someone is identifiable, but on the other hand it could be a slippery slope.
That being said, it was recently put into legislation that the burka is banned here in the Netherlands but only in specific areas. But there are like 200 people who wear it in the Netherlands, so it's kind of a wasted exercise to go through it all
I’m not being funny but European countries should ban them, I think they hide peoples identities and I find it rude as when you try having a conversation you can’t really hear what they say as mouth covered. Also if Europeans visit Dubai we can’t wear bikinis, wear shorts or anything that shows skin even if it’s hot country as it’s the law there so I don’t think it’s offensive at all to ban them, as we can’t wear certain things in their countries and wearing a niqab is offensive to me it’s just rude.
Ok but that’s certain beaches and some people got arrested for wearing bikini in certain area and people get arrested for silly reasons such as brushing past someone.

It is banned in France because it is forbidden to wear any identity concealing mask, anything that hides your face in public. Also, France is a very laic country : any signs of belonging to any religion is forbidden in public schools for example. I would personally ban it because people wearing this (or making their wife wear this) are usually non-moderated muslims who, in my opinion, represent the big oppression of women in Islam. Since oppression of women is not a value i would consider compatible with Western society, I don't want that kind of people in my country.
Well, it is unusual in every country other than, where they have to. But (i dont want to offent anyone, so please forgive me, if i do) it can be seen as an accessoires or just clothing. Everybody can wear whatever they want to. if they like it and feel confortable they should. i dont see how this is a threat. It shouldn't be forbidden, people also dont forbid gothic, lolita, or cosplay. so why should they forbid this. but i do think that it is may very hot in this kind of clothing, especially in the summer. So im a little concered for the girls, that they may over heat. but if its fine then erverything is fine.
Absolutely. Ignoring the religious implications of potential oppression, etc - it is a major issue legally. There is no chance of identifying someone based on the Niqab - or any other kind of headwear. Exceptions are safety-concerns such as using a helmet during riding bike.
You use the fact that you have friends who wear hijab as a defense to ensure everybody that you aren't prejudiced, but this just makes it sound suspicious, sorry. So many people use this excuse even when they do have a secret bias. As for the issue of the wearing of a full body covering, people should be allowed to wear what they want. If hiding things is the concern, consider the fact that items can be concealed in other ways, just the other day I saw an advertisement for a hidden holster, so people can carry guns without anybody knowing.
Yes, it needs to be banned. Wear a hijab if you want, as long as your face is visible, I don't care. But the niqab and the burka both hide the faces, and they reduce women down to a blob of fabric that's indistinguishable from any other blob of fabric. Let the women show their faces, let them have an individual identity!
It cannot be legal to hide identity in public. I used to wear a balaclava as a child. That was a different time. No more. Yes that's right children should not wear them too. No excuse within the confines of the law, UNLESS, it's in a private setting such as like those people you get who have a balaclava fetish and you have to wear one during sex.. kinda' annoying to be honest and it makes my face itch so I have the horrible itching while having sex which is horrible, which to be honest is why it didn't work out between me and her..
Or say if an actor is wearing a balaclava on a film set. That's probably a better example than the sex one actually..
anything that covers the full face should be ban. It makes it impossible without taking the next step of making woman wearing the garb reveal her face to see who she really is under it. Then you will be seen as being discriminatory toward the religion by asking her to show her identity. Such fears can be used to allow things to happen that could be stopped if they can identify people before crimes are committed.

At least in a bikini you can clearly identify who it is in case they do a crime, while in a niqab it's literally fucking impossible.
Though I don't really agree with niqab being banned due to freedom of expression, the reasons why people would want them banned have NOTHING to do with modesty or a lack of modesty, dumbass. It's a safety thing. Being able to see nothing but your eyes makes it a lot easier to get away with crimes.
@TheMainManeMan I have watched robbery clips of people hiding their identity during a crime. It was just as difficult to identify the accused and took a long time to capture them.

I'm against it being banned, unless it's in scenarios where like gear/clothing is banned. Like if you're not allowed to wear a motorcycle helmet, then you shouldn't be allowed to wear the face veil in that environment. I don't know how difficult it is to put on/take off, but I don't think that's unreasonable to require.
The article of clothing in itself is not threatening, but the ways in which it can be used can bypass normal recognition but also modern systems of security including facial recognition softwares designed to help crime. While it is a religious article, it is a religious article which directly prohibits westernized security and in a law enforcement. if we all had trackers implanted in us, then it wouldn't matter one bit since the government would still be able to figure out who did what.
You do realize that, banning this would contradict the first amendment. Freedom of expression and freedom of religion. If this happens then all of our civil liberties are in trouble.

If a person wearing this walked into the building I am sitting in and tried to kill people I and those in that building will deal with that then. I won't willingly agree to infringing on civil liberties out of fear of what might happen.
Niqab must be forbidden not cause of cultural reasons and not for reasons of terrorism. Simply the niqab could be used by Catholic or atheistic criminal, pretending to be a Muslim person, to make a robbery.
