A movie about consumerism and materialistic drones was also sold as product and merchandised. It's irony on top of irony. Also I own a lot of tools that don't own me. Even my phone can be put down when I'm not using it. Just because it requires maintenance doesn't mean it owns you. I could plant a tomatoes. That tomato doesn't own me. I want Tha juicy tomato though so I'm going to care for it. Give it a name too. Mader.

Yea. I'd love to jump ship and move to Israel, or the middle of nowhere South-East Asia, and join a revolution/ do something exciting/ actually live, but now I have real estate and a bunch of stuff keeping me here in the US. I should burn it all and go.
Very much true. You "buy" a lifestyle and work your ass into the grave trying to maintain it. You can sell your soul for a good hourly rate and no home life, or find a good work/life balance, but the pay's trash. So be it. Top Ramen with friends it is.
Only items that require upkeep own you. A chair doesn't own you, it just stands there, but a car demands you work to fill it with fuel and pay for repairs. Pets are the same, we're effectively their slaves building our lives around their needs.

Disagree.
This is the way of thinking of people who can't make a choice. Tyler Durden as alter ego of the 'nice guy' is the rebellious part and is questioning everything the 'nice guy' owns and does.
In the world where nothing is for free, most people are able to evaluate the value of things they own and what they pay for it. Hence it's not a schizophrenic reaction like in this movie, but cold calculated benefits and disadvantages equation.
I could sell everything I own and I could live few years on extravagant level. Finally I would end up as drug and alcohol addicted in some homeless shelter. Is this the future I want? No.I modeled my entire life after that movie!
Lots of wisdom in there.
Personally my favorite is
(Edward Norton and Tyler Durden looking at a half naked poster of a Calvin Kline male model on the bus)
Edward norton says to Tyler in a mocking tone " Is that what a man looks like"? Tyler durden responds with a chuckle " Self improvement's masturbation".Yes, but are any of us actually going to DO anything about it? Or will we just continue in our comfortable ways? I think we all know the answer.
The greed for more and more is absolutely something which hinders people. We are not easy satisfied with what we have but always want more, better, etc. Look for instance at cars, phones, etc.
Depends, some people get attached to their possessions, and need them to pump the ego. Some people can just appreciate nice things for what they are, and let go of them when necessary. It's all in the mind, "ownership" is a mental concept.
Yes like money, you will never be satisfied if you love it.
Of course it is. The entertainment was created to control our minds! Still, I don't mind it. Gives me something to do for free time.
Only in a specific situation: when you're rich enough to afford expensive items. But too poor to buy another one. For example if you saved up for an expensive car for decades, then you get that car and it becomes the defining feature of your life
materialism holds you back in feeling "real" imao.
I can yes. It's never so much a matter of what or how much you have, as the value you ascribe these things.
In a sense they kind of do.
Such as emotions, you own them, but sometimes they end up owning you.Shhhhh you're not supposed to talk about it!
For many or most, yes.
