Voted pro-life/anti-death penalty. The case for both being related to some extent, but not strictly so.

In terms of the death penalty, there is no evidence that it deters crime. As a general rule, it is the surety of punishment rather than its severity that is the best deterrent.

To be sure, the purpose of the law is first to protect society, secondly to punish and third to rehabilitate where possible. As can be seen in the recent prison reform movement - backed by both some conservatives and liberals alike - that central insight has been lost.

However, we shape the law and the law then shapes us. See also the civil rights laws of the 1960s which have effected a revolution in race relations. (The idea that a black man and a white man cannot sit together at the same lunch counter is as alien to this generation as Neptune. Yet in 1965 it was pretty much the norm.)

In terms of abortion, the law is reflecting and reinforcing an ethos that freedom is an end in itself and that the value of life is a subjective judgment rather than an objective standard affording legal protection. That is a very - to say the least - problematic edifice on which to found a culture and base a legal standard.

In terms of capital punishment, it has a similarly coarsening and "relativizing" effect. It tends to reinforce not a health ethic of justice, but a vulgar sense of vengeance and - frankly - bloodlust. The aim is not to protect society, but to exact retaliation. This ethic, in its turn, becomes one that places emotion over reason.

A society so founded is apt not to be pretty - and you can see it in the coarse tone of the culture and the intemperate tone in both social media and our politics. What ought be prudent debates over public policy become screaming matches over good vs. evil - often over the most trivial things.

Aristotle said that the first questions of politics are, "How ought we to live? What kind of a people do we wish to be?" A legal culture - and therefore a broader culture - that softens emotions, emphasizes reason over feelings, recognizes that freedom is a means to an end - the pursuit of civic virtue - and not an end in itself, and that gives primacy to an objective standard of the value of life best answers those questions.

That is the case against both the death penalty and abortion on demand. Given the ruins we see around us - and the public's acceptance of both policies - it is a solid case.

Yes. eye for an eye. why would anyone want to keep someone around if they murdered someone out of cold blood? i know there's going to be people around going to say what during war time or when you kill someone out of self defense. thats completely different your trying to protect yourself or the ones around you from someone or people that are ment to harm or kill you.

So yes if you killed someone out of cold blood or raped someone touched a child then yes take them out back and kill them or better yet use them for love test subjects instead of animals.

I’m pro life - against abortion but I’m not the kind of person to push my views on people. For example, if I got pregnant when I wasn’t ready, I wouldn’t abort the child however if someone else was in the same situation and they chose to abort then that’s their choice. It’s not my place to judge. I don’t believe women who get abortions deserve the death penalty. I don’t think abortion is a crime, it’s a choice.
I know many countries have laws around abortion. I don’t believe abortions should be illegal, I’d rather a women get it done somewhere safe then take measures into their own hands. However, I believe the laws limiting the time frame in which a women can get one done is fair because at that point the fetus can actually feel pain and can feel you killing him/her.

I'm pro life, to answer your question I don't support death penalty! In my opinion a prisoner being set to death penalty is a blessing because he or she wouldn't have to suffer no longer rather than staying alive growing old in a cell without family, a spouse, or friends at all. They just have to follow orders and always live on edge. Life in prison is worse than death penalty in my opinion.

If a woman gets an abortion for killing a baby for a non medical reason (Medical reasons being chance of permanent injury, death, or abnormality) then I believe the woman should be put under the death penalty for taking murdering a baby 😉

I would not consider myself a pro lifer because I think population reduction by any means is not necessarily a bad thing. I do however feel, as a strict constitutionalist, government sanctioned killing is wrong and victims of a crime should have the right to kill the criminal if they are proven guilty.

Do I support the death penalty? Not really, but the fact is that some people are too dangerous to be released, but also very expensive to keep alive for.. what reason?
For him to spend 55 years rotting away in prison?

In addition: there is the situation that happened in Syria, when the Isis prisoners escaped from the Kurdish prison.
I believe it's too much of a risk to allow such people to be free again. So when it comes to choosing between innocent lives and the lives of bad people, it's not a difficult choice.

How could someone be pro life and then turn around and kill the mother? Does this apply to miscarriages too? I mean, if a woman doesn't want a child and catches it soon enough, she shouldn't die for it. It's like people want woman to quit school and jobs just to raise children when they're not ready.

Not a good comparison. One is ending an unwanted pregnancy wherein the fetus has never committed a crime against anyone and the other is ending the life of someone who’s made the conscious decision to break the law in such a horrible way that the crime carries the death penalty.

I think there are some situations where the death penalty could be warranted like in cases of extremely dangerous people who would otherwise be in solitary confinement anyway.

But it should only be reserved for people that can't even stay in jail without major dilemmas or who committed such egregious crimes and the victim's families just want the person gone.

Obviously there is no relationship between this and abortion because everyone is born innocent.

No, I'm against the death penalty. That is also the current teaching of the Catholic Church - death penalty cannot be tolerated unless there is genuinely no other option (and in 21st century, there is always another option).
