3.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. The British statesman and political philosopher Edmund Burke wrote, "The effect of liberty to individuals is that they may do as they please. We ought see what it will please them to do before we risk congratulations." Therein lay the problem with laws that permit abortion on demand.
A society that premises its law as "Choice"- to use the locution of abortion rights advocates - effectively leaves open the question of the value of human life. It becomes not a standing principle, but a subjective judgment to each individual. In such a society, human life becomes not an end in itself, but mere instrument. Life becomes not an object whose preservation is the highest standard, but rather a convenience to be maintained or not according to the satisfaction of another's will.
We shape our laws and then our laws shape us - see also the civil rights laws of the 1960s which have effected a revolution in race relations. (The idea that a black man and a white man cannot sit together at the same lunch counter is as alien to this generation as Neptune. Yet in 1965 it was pretty much the norm.)
Inherent then in the pro-choice argument is the idea that life has no value save that which each person chooses to attach to it. It denies society any authority to make a collective judgment on such questions. Therefore, in this view, the law may not afford protection to life except at some arbitrarily defined (and inherently subjective) point.
This then conduces to an assertion of power over rights. Life is maintained not as its own end, but according to the will of the person who, effectively, controls it because they can. An ethic of convenience is established and it is a slippery slope on which to build a culture and a legal edifice.
Such a society will not value life that sees life as not an end, but as a means to some other end. Indeed, that is why at about the same time as the culture began to shift on the abortion question we also saw a rise in child abuse, spousal abuse, divorce, out of wedlock births and other social pathologies. These were not unrelated phenomena.
Aristotle said that the first questions of politics are, "How ought we to live? What kind of a people do we wish to be?" The implicit answer of those who support abortion on demand is, in effect, that it is nobody's business. Predictable results follow. One cannot expect the society to absent itself from collective moral judgments on the value of life and then expect an ethical social order to result.
Suffice to say it is best to argue these questions on a philosophical and moral plane and to refrain from name calling. Thus calling a woman evil is perhaps needlessly pejorative and does not allow for the simple fact that a woman (or a man) can be in error - even serious error - without being evil.
However, at the very least, the pro-choice position conduces to an ethically and morally problematic outcome. That cannot be called good.56 Reply- +1 y
baby never had liberty
- +1 y
@888theGreat Actually, we typically do not hold those to account who have been deprived of their liberty. Thus, the slaves were not held to blame for their enslaved state, but justice decreed that their liberty be restored to them.
In any case, the Declaration of Independence speaks of the right to "LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Life being antecedent to and requisite for the other two. - +1 y
@slatyb What else is an embryo or a fetus? It is a human being at a given stage of development. No different than at the other end when you are elderly and can no longer walk or speak.
Bottom line, the burden falls upon those who would argue that it is not human. If not, then name the precise second in gestation when the embryo becomes human - and then explain how it is scientifically and morally different one second before that moment, and one second after. (Because if you get it wrong, you are legalizing willful murder.)
So what is that EXACT moment in time. Further, before that moment, does the embryo/fetus have the potential to become a duck or a cow or a fish? If it is not human, than ought it not have the potential to become any of these things?
Bottom line, the argument rests on pseudo-science. A thing cannot be other than what it is at any given point in its development. The human will always be human. The duck the same and so on.
You have, as I suggested, merely replaced an act of will for logical analysis to get a result that suits your wants. The justice of those wants being assumed when in reality they are problematic. - +1 y
@slatyb No. because it is living and growing and developing. It is no less a human being at that stage than it is at two months old. Scientifically, it cannot be anything other than what it is.
To repeat, if it is mere protoplasm, then it must have an equal chance of becoming a dog as a human being. Yet we know it cannot be anything but human. Human beings, like all organisms, go through various stages of development.
By your logic, that two month old cannot be human because it does not have all the attributes of a fully developed human. (For example, it cannot speak. It cannot walk. Indeed, It does not think logically, etc,)
So again, you are left with the problem. If not human, define the exact second that it becomes human. In that connection, how is it not human one second before that moment, and it is one second after that moment?
Oh, and in that last connection, who is defining when the status of "human" is conferred?

+1 yits ok, i have 129 iq i think im right here, let me explain
deleting and aborting are different things, think of a pc... deleting means getting rid of a file that exists... aborting means stop a file from being made and coming into existance., so u didn't take anything away, u didn't delete anything, u jus aborted it... u get what i mean?
so how can u say its taking a life when that life never existed?
fair enuff if the baby is late in developement say about 7 months, because by then it may be conscious and feeling things and thinking things and moving, but before it developes a conscious.. around about 5 months i believe, according to science... it literally sees nothing, feels nothing, and thinks nothing, its not yet alive, its jus like a plant, yeah a plant is growing, but it has no mind or thoughts or anything, so ur not killing anything, ur preventing something at that point,
also, also, now this is the main point u need to pay attention to here, men squirt their seman into tissue everyday, do u know how many potential babies are in that sperm when a man shoots into tissue? around a billion or something, now i could say thats an early abortion because ur preventing billions of life coming into existance, what is the difference between that and a early fetus abortion? because both the sperm and the young fetus are not conscious or experiencing anything, its not much difference to me other than a young fetus has developed somewhat of a body,
now, i know many people may think that jus because the body has grown abit that its "fate" or something and that he or she is suppose to be born, but thats not true, no one is suppose to be born, if they was all 1 billion sperms in a guys masturbation waste should go into a womans uterus by that logic, but things only happen because u make them happen, no one is "suppose to be born"
sure if you have been alive and created memories with people, and u take that away, then that is obiviously wrong, but if u take away something that was never there, i jus fail to see the "wrong" in that.,
i hope there is some other intellectuals here who understand what i mean and agree with me and get my point..04 Reply- +1 y
its hard to get accross my point exactly how i see it in my head, hard to translate to words, but i know im absoltutely right and early abortion is fine... jus think of that thing i said about billions of potential sperm being shot into tissue by a man... think about that... do u think thats murder>?
should a guy go to jail for p[reventing billions of lifes? or does he have right to make that choice... think about it.. - +1 y
if u was aborted u would never know about it, and neither would i... its no different than the 5 billion years before i was born, it may jus be another 5 billion years of nothing for "them" meaning nothing, cos something that didn't exist can't be a someone.. its jus space, air

"if u was aborted u would never know about it"
Not true. You would feel it happening. It would be excruciating torture. An unborn baby can feel pain after growing only 20 weeks (approx. 4.5 months) in their mother's uterus.
lozierinstitute.org/.../
I don't think it's wrong. Would rather a chick who is mentally unstable or has the potential to be a shitty parent get rid of the undeveloped embryo (that isn't even alive) than to give birth to a living, breathing child and put it through nothing but years of torture and abuse, causing them to be raised up as a dysfunctional adult.
Not everyone should be a parent. Even rape victims should be allowed to have an abortion. Why should they have to suffer and look at the product of rape every day of their life?51 Reply- +1 y

No, of course not. Not everyone is fit to be a parent, and you'd be doing a lot more damage to a kid whose mother didn't want him, then just aborting them. Hell, I sometimes wish I was aborted. I sure as sh*t don't have anything physically going for me.
Seriously, I hate anyone butting their noses into other people's lives, whether that be on the left or right. I especially hat the hypocrisy pro-life people exhibit by having loose wanton sex (condoms and pills are the same thing as abortion) or by letting single mothers and child suffer after birth, when they'd probably be much better with the abortion. I mean, at least put your money where your f*cking mouth is. If you are pro-life, then you are PRO-LIFE. Not just "anti-abortion" based on some retarded religious purposes or other reasons that do not concern you.
Most people can't even take care of themselves; how TF do we expect them to take care of other people's children (that they won't anyway). You can say you dislike abortion, but you do not have the right to control other people's bodies no more than the left has the right to force toxic Johnson and Johnson vaccines into you that'll give you blood clots. And like I said, if you were going to have that stance, then at the very least, you need to fork over the cash to take care of that child, since you decided to make it "your business" to force a likely unfit mother to be a mother anyway. Double the case if you're a hypocrite having sex outside the purpose of creating babies, which in itself, IS a form of abortion.
Otherwise, shut the f*ck up and worry about your own life. There's 8 billion people in this world and most of them live sh*tty lives. We don't need another billion with mommy issues and a high tendency to become serial killers and rapists because you wanted to espouse some religious horsesh*t about "baby murders being wrong."
But even THAT would be fine, if you actually got up off your asses and DID something about it, other than just saying "it's bad cause I say so" while real mothers struggle every day to not drown their kids in a bathtub or leave them in the woods somewhere because you pretended to care about the life of that child, up until it was actually born, to where you then stopped giving a sh*t.
Either put your money where your mouth is, or shut up and worry about your own existence. 12 Reply- 1 y

What's the fault of baby that it was created? Why are people killing the innocent ones to protect their 'dignity' or 'pride'? Do they realize that they are killing an pure soul? I simply don't get it how half of the people voted no. It's very disturbing and disappointing to see that people are becoming inhumane to even kill an innocent being. Yes or no is too simple of an answer.
Is it wrong to not give someone unborn a chance to live. Yes.
Is it wrong to bring an unborn child into the world that could cause them pain in suffering. Maybe.
Is it wrong to force someone to hurt their body for a chance for an unwanted child who maybe punished and tortured by a vindictive parent. Yes.
There are so many ways to look at this.
That's why i say we should not force our beliefs on others.
We don't know or understand what the reason they got pregnant or how it happened.
Some people take caution, some don't and still can get pregnant.
Some get raped.
I think if we just worry about ourselves this wouldn't be such a big deal.
Sorry bout the long winded statement.10 Reply2.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I think it depends on the circumstances. One of my best friends and his wife decided to get an abortion. This was like 15 years ago. The baby wasn't even a baby yet, but even to this day he feels guilty. He can't stop thinking about who that baby would have or could have been. He said to me one night when we were drinking " I have 2 great kids, but what if we aborted the best kid ever? What if her or she was like the next Einstein, or what if they were the next Hitler? Who fucking knows, right?" They didn't want to have any more kids after their 2 sons, but she got pregnant again and they have the most wonderful 8 year old daughter now. Every time I go over there she gets so happy, grabs me by the hand, drags me to the couch, snuggles up next to me, and starts making fun of me mercilessly hahaha

+1 yI mean let’s grant the assumption that a fetus has personhood. Consider this thought experiment. Imagine you find yourself awake on a operating table. The surgeon has sown you to some other person and tells you that this other person need to be temporarily attached to you or else they’ll die. It won’t be long, just a couple months. Being attached to you will affect your wellbeing, but detaching yourself from them will guarantee their death. Are you within your rights to sever yourself from this other person? Most people, including myself, agree you can choose to not be attached to this other person. What this scenario shows is that personhood and the right to life it guarantees doesn’t necessitate that others have to give up their right to their body, i. e. there exist circumstances where ‘taking a life’ is justified, specifically circumstances where it’s the only way to secure your bodily rights.

@supercutebutt that's an interesting post. I've never heard someone use scripture to legitimize abortion before. I do have to disagree though. The Bible is referring Adam and God breathing life into him. It's not talking about the first breathe when a baby is being born. It is a life long before it is born. It has a heartbeat. Yes I know that's not enough. But studies suggest unborn babies are learning from external sources before they're ever born. If that's true that would suggest conscious thought.

@ChiTown33 So if a rapist impregnated your sister, you would want the government to force her to give birth?

@AndrésC64 "If I hadn't been born we wouldn't be having this discussion" - Is THAT your argument for abortion? Seriously? Is that the best you can come up with?
- +1 y
@AndrésC64 I'm sorry if you think my opinion is silly. At least I respected you enough to accept yours. Maybe that's why you defend abortion -- some people turn out like you.
Be more respectful. - +1 y
@Desconhecida Oops. I was actually referring to @Gal67, not you. My bad.

baby and fetus.. 2 different words with different meaning
- +1 y
Who would listen to an opinion of someone who doesn't know the difference between plural and possessive. Seriously, man.
- +1 y
no from a second its born its life, and also u idiots really think a fetus is nothing>? u dont know why they made this word? a fetus is a baby that has not yet been born, u idiots, it doesn't matter what the mom calls the fetus
- +1 y
@amg147 If a rapist put a fetus in your belly, you would want the government to force you to give birth?
- +1 y
@supercutebutt That baby should have as much of a shot at life as I did. If we put money toward stopping rape and less toward abortion programs we would not be wasting so much time and money and save more lives. #PROLIFE
- +1 y
Not baby's life.. fetus life.. actually... Pre life. It can't be a life if you're not yet conscious. Why can you fuckin idiots not get it through your thick skull?
A fetus does not develope conscious awareness until about 5 months or something according to science, get it through your Tiney brain.. if it's not alive.. it can't have a life taken away. You idiot.. do you not understand?
Conscious not developed = not yet been alive, not yet had a life.. therefore not alive
Wake. up. Duhhh - +1 y
And nomim. not a fucking psychopath, I don't like murder and hate people being killed, I'm jus smart and realise killing something that was never alive is no harm to anyone.. cos something that was never alive can't feel pain or regret you idiot.. it's basically jus thin air until it has developed a conscious, it's nothing... Yeah there is a body of a fetus developing.. but it has no mind or conscious until a certain point. Get it through your dumb fucking skull. It's pointless trying to explain anything to you idiots. You always think you're right and never consider taking in the true facts I'm telling you, whatever.. go ahead and think what you want idiot. But you are wrong
- +1 y
Fuckin idiot
- +1 y
If you was aborted at 5 months do you think you would know or have felt it?
No because you wasn't conscious or alive at that age and it would make no difference. So stop feeling "sympathy" for these things that have no yet even been alive you absolutely soft fucking fairy. Use your brain - +1 y
Whatever I mean your girls. You have peanut brains. I can't expect y'all to understand anything. I dunno why I'm getting pissed off by your lack of understanding, girls don't understand anything. It's to be expected I guess. IL jus go away and live a life of a smart person. U continue Ur life with small brain
- +1 y
@GoPhuckYaself What the heck is wrong with you? Why all of the sudden is it just a dead object? Why is a little clump of cells any different than a big clump of cells? (JUST SO YOU KNOW YOU ARE JUST A BIG CLUMP OF CELLS) Just cuz it is little does not mean it does not have value. That does not line up.
- +1 y
@supercutebutt Whats wrong with me is stupidity pisses me the fuck off. Try to understand
2.5K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. In the days before abortions, they just used to kill unwanted children after they were born.
229 Reply- +1 y
@Quigly It solves the problem of needing to look after an unwanted child and provides a method of termination involving minimal to no suffering, both to the foetus and the mother.
It saves on funding for the health system in a variety of ways. Funding which can be used for research and even education on safe sex practices which will result in less abortions.
It reduces the risk of attempts at illegal abortions by people unqualified to perform them.
That solves the problem of potential pain, mutilation and infection of those patients.
It regulates the procedure, making it cheaper than using a black market doctor who may extort a patient who needs one.
It removes a lucrative opportunity for organized crime to flourish.
It prevents the psychological trauma of having to raise a child which was conceived as a result of rape.
It saves on state and federal funding where an unwanted child would need to be raised in institutions if the mother and father are mentally unfit to raise a child.
It prevents people being born with birth defects which would make them a burden on their parents and still need assistance after the deaths of their parents, draining more funds from the health system.
It prevents infanticide and eliminates the possibility an unwanted child will suffer lethal pain at the hands of malicious parents.
Legal abortions solve plenty of problems. Don't pretend it doesn't. You're also being very speciest. You have no problem with the suffering inflicted on the meat which ends up on your plate or the struggle human overpopulation is inflicting on all other life on the planet as well as the climate of the planet itself. - +1 y
@AndrésC64 eExactly. I mean if they choose to picket outside the house of a woman booked in for an abortion and then actually help her raise the child if she cancels it, fine. But force her and the baby into a life of hardship, struggle, misery and reliance on inadequate government assistance, feeding an underclass of poverty and lowering the average quality of life, then turn a blind eye? Pathetic.
- +1 y
Was never speaking againstt abortion in absolute all scenarios.
Fraud and malpractice are rampant throughout the medical industry.
Only Enforcement of laws reduces fraud and malpractice.
Not legalization of immoral behavior.
Self mutilation proves my point of mental problems being the issue.
Mentally unfit mothers and fathers raise children all the time and the state does nothing about it.
So your logic is that because we have criminals we shouldn't have laws?
So You are for killing humans and against humans necessity for eating food?
killing other animals for food is not unique to the human species.
No animal mother on the planet rips the baby from her womb to kill it.
It is a unique evil only known to exist with humans. - +1 y
@Quigly "Only Enforcement of laws reduces fraud and malpractice."
Such as enforcing the law of legal abortion.
"Not legalization of immoral behavior"
What's more immoral, allowing a baby to be born into a life of unnecessary hardship and resulting in increased hardship on the parents and potentially leading to it being inhumanely murdered in a state where it can consciously experience pain and suffering, or legalizing the humane termination of it when it is still in a state in which it is unable to comprehend anything, is not consciously aware and cannot experience its demise?
The former is far more immoral. Abortion is not legalizing immoral behavior, it is legalizing moral behavior.
"Self mutilation proves my point of mental problems being the issue."
Two issues addressed by having legal abortions.
"Mentally unfit mothers and fathers raise children all the time and the state does nothing about it."
Exactly, so legalizing abortions ameliorates that. - +1 y
@Quigly "So your logic is that because we have criminals we shouldn't have laws?"
No, my logic is that because we have criminals and problems which can be ameliorated by making the right things legal and the wrong things illegal, we can have a better society by doing so.
"So You are for killing humans and against humans necessity for eating food?"
No. I'm simply pointing out a flaw in the way you define yourself. You think you're "pro life". But you're actually just pro human life, with no regard for the quality of that life. I'm pro life too, and pro the best quality of life for all.
"No animal mother on the planet rips the baby from her womb to kill it.
It is a unique evil only known to exist with humans."
But plenty, including humans kill their offspring after they're born, inflicting great suffering. Humans are in the unique position of having a better option which doesn't involve as much suffering. You seriously think killing a fully grown baby is a better option than aborting a foetus unable to experience conscious suffering? - +1 y
They used to use partial birth abortion where the child is partially delivered except for the head. Then they would stick a vacuum tube into the head and suck out the brains. Totally barbaric! It has since been outlawed.
- +1 y
@Daniela1982 When was it outlawed?
- +1 y
If people really want to solve the abortion problem stop having unprotected sex or using abortion as a form of birth control. That of get fixed so you won't ever have that problem. A person should know if they never want children so just get fixed FFS.
- +1 y
@Daniela1982 Nevermind; I found it. It was 2003.
- +1 y
@AndrésC64 It's all about taking responsibility for your own actions.
- +1 y
@OfDeath Hey, here's a better solution. Use protection if you don't want to get pregnant or get someone pregnant. Stop using abortion as a means of birth control. Isn't that easier and less trouble than going in for an abortion? It's easier for a guy to have a vasectomy than it is for a girl to get an abortion.
. - +1 y
@Quigly There are situations where responsibility is taken from one's control. Such as through violent and coercive relationships and rape as prime examples. In these cases, pregnancy couldn't be avoided and having the option to humanely terminate a fetus which cannot experience its demise is not as immoral as inflicting the physical pain and mental anguish of forcing a woman by law to bring an unwanted child to term and give birth to it. The moral thing to do in these situations, is for abortions performed by trained medical doctors to be legal under the law. Criminalizing abortions only leads to a black market of extortion, malpractice, unprofessional operations leading to infection, disease, disability and unnecessary pain.
- +1 y
@Daniela1982 Those are good preventatives but even such caution doesn't ameliorate the problem of unwanted pregnancy altogether. Abortion needs to be a legal option or it opens the door to an extortionate black market which will only prey on the vulnerable. That can lead to many worse outcomes than an aborted fetus which did not experience its demise. Some of those outcomes are so abhorrent and do occur in places where criminals control women's options, that I probably couldn't even describe them in a g@g comment without it violating the rules of the website.
- +1 y
@Quigly you're completely deluded if you think making abortions illegal is a good idea. Those who are dumb enough to need to use abortion clinics as a primary means of birth control are a negligible portion of the population and are also those who would be most vulnerable to exploitation. It is also obvious that the fact rape and domestic violence are illegal does not entirely prevent them from happening. In the instance where pregnancy was unavoidable and will be detrimental to one's life and the future life of a fetus, safe abortion performed by a medical professional who knows what they are doing needs to be an option.

@AndrésC64 OK dingleberry. You want to get technical it's at best manslaughter or at the very least 3rd degree murder. But I wasn't speaking in a legal definition I was speaking in a moral one. And in terms of abortion you're taking a LIFE. Morally it's no different than murder.

the people who thinka fetus and baby is exactly same thing and dumb, why would there be 2 different words for the same thing? what he's saying is true
This is not a black and white topic, it's not right or wrong, it depends on multiple variables. Not sure why people insist in overly simplifying it.

@NYlatefun By killing that life you are just as horrible as the rapist, and treating that human as an object just like the ripest.
- +1 y
@NYlatefun That makes me so sad that you are ok with killing a baby. I hope you realize how wrong you are! God made babies as a gift to enjoy and if we put money toward stopping rape instead of toward abortion programs, we could save a lot more babies, and sex was created for married couples, not just a good time. Not only are you a man you will never understand what it is truly like to be mother, I wish you the very best and that you someday discover how wrong you are. #PROLIFE
- +1 y
You assume too many things with too little info. You are religious, which makes the topic way more complicated as that clouds the facts. And no, I'm not ok with killing babies, but under certain circumstances and if it's done very early it's virtually inoffensive, there's no baby after a week of gestation, it's an embryo, two different things. And by the way, I am more biased towards being against it, but again, there are circumstances that are just too complicated to forbid it.
- +1 y
@NYlatefun Maybe different names but still the same thing. Just cuz I call you Fred, or Bob, or Joe does not mean that is your name. Why is this so hard for someone as old as you are to understand? I don't care what google says, it is not like we can believe everything we read on the internet. A life is a life is a life. I hope you think about our conversation and realize a 15-year-old girl knows more than a 46-year-old man. #PROLIFE
