Leaving aside the probability that such a move could easily lead to miscalculation - and thus an escalation to a thermonuclear exchange - the reason is that the United States' interest in Ukraine does not merit such action. Please note, this is not to say that the USA has no strategic interests in Ukraine, but rather such interests are secondary and derivative.

It being best to start by recalling that through most of American history, Ukraine was part of Imperial Russia and from 1920 to 1991 the Soviet Union. This having no noticeable or deleterious impact on the American global strategic position. This then making the deployment of troops to Ukraine, with its concomitant risk of war, and likely nuclear war at that, disproportionate.

Ukraine's current significance to the USA is rather based on its impact on several NATO allies. This especially true of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Romania and to a lesser extent Hungary. The loss of Ukraine to Russia, absent American security assurances to those aforementioned states, would undermine their strategic position and likely result in the collapse of NATO.

Please also note that the dispute over Ukraine has already, in any case, divided NATO. Britain has been aggressive about sending weapons and diplomatic support to Ukraine. By contrast, Germany is seeking to develop its economic and trade ties with Russia, while using NATO security assurances to protect its own security interests. France, (with some quiet help from Italy) in all this, has been quietly seeking to entangle Russia more deeply in Europe, thereby making it a counterweight to German influence in the EU.

Put simply, there is a tangle of conflicting interests not just between NATO and Russia, but within NATO. For the United States to step in with a direct military intervention would likely please Poland, the Baltic States, Romania and the UK, but it would shatter German ties with NATO. This then effectively render NATO "null and void" as it is the fastest strategic access point to eastern Europe, including Russia.

Further, any confrontation between the United States and Russia plays out to the strategic advantage of the People's Republic of China. If the Americans and Russians are engaged in a conflict, (again, assuming that it does not go nuclear in which events all bets are off), China is left a free hand toward Taiwan and the South China Sea, This also meaning, in effect, that the USA would be abandoning Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Thailand.

Put simply, the United States cannot walk away from Ukraine, but its interests require that it avoid war. If Russia invades Ukraine, there is little beyond diplomatic and economic sanctions that the United States can offer. A direct military conflict between the USA and Russia would split NATO, to the latter's advantage, and give China a free hand.

This is a game of three dimensional chess and not simply a test of wills. The historic interests of the major European powers are at play and in this case American direct interests are secondary. For the USA, this is about reassuring NATO's eastern flank, balancing the interests of NATO's other major members - the UK, France, Germany and Italy - in order to keep the alliance whole, and to avoid driving Russia and China closer together.

This is not a mere contest of muscle. Suffice to add that it would be profoundly dangerous to see it in such simplistic terms.

Can you explain this to me better? Honestly using Russia as a counterweight to Germany is certainly an old political strategy of France, at least since Germany managed to become a giant in Europe.

But in this situation, I don't think that's the goal. Emmanuel Macron tried with other nations to arrive at a de-escalation, note that it was an attempt doomed to failure, because France weighs nothing in current geopolitics.

Please also note that France has rather tried to strengthen our ties with Germany, by even making closer and closer collaborations, surprisingly even in the military field. The French Elites only dream of a Franco-German couple, yes you read correctly, I wrote couple, because that's how our elites, and even some of our leaders, call our links with Germany.

Obviously this term only exists with us, and not with the Germans. André Suares already noted on this subject "the most serious errors of France, it is when it puts feeling in the policy."

I don't think that the Strategy with Russia is still relevant, moreover, as you have noted, Germany has economic interests with Russia, much more than with France. So even in a strategy of counterweight to Germany it is doomed to failure.

@Julie4 Not sure I follow your argument. France sought the euro as a way to tie Germany down by gaining a say in German economic policy. This was not simply cooperation but, in effect, co-opting German power where possible.

In the case of Russia, President Macron went to Russia to speak with President Putin while the German Chancellor has stayed home, said as little as possible, and in the case of the Nordstream pipeline, would not even utter its name when asked about it at a press conference he attended with President Biden.

These are all examples of the various states involved pursuing and balancing their national interests. There is nothing nefarious in this, but by the same token the idea that nations simply toss away their historic interests is simplistic thinking.

Yup, France has sought to improve its ties with Germany. By the same token, as noted above, it did so by pursuing the euro, of which the Germans were decidedly unenthusiastic. It was a case of France improving its ties with Germany by entangling - and tying down - German economic might.

In this case, if France brings Russia closer into the EU, it then seeks better relations with France or makes itself an economic satellite of Germany. This - sotto voce - is the choice France hopes to give Russia vis-a-vis Germany.

Things have changed since then and take a good look at the policies pursued by France with Germany in recent years.

There is nothing to suggest that in this specific case, France is seeking to bring Russia closer to the EU.

For example, in such an alliance, who would be the junior partner? (I'll let you ponder that one.) Would the junior partner be content to be in such a position? You presuppose a commonality of interests among states - even allied states - that in fact has no historical basis. Moreover, there is nothing nefarious in a nation pursuing its interests as those interests are rooted in a nation's historic needs and material position.

Bottom line, when considering international relations, it is best to recall the following quotes:

Play the game out in your head in an international arena where there there is no law and where power is the coin of the realm.

You know, it was De Gaulle's fantasy to want to see this alliance made. Although the geopolitical context was different.

I don't see how French interests would necessarily be threatened, European economies are far too intertwined. Only the United States could take a dim view of such an alliance.

She would surely use threats and other economic means to prevent such an alliance, however the EU is a very important economic market and the member countries could also retaliate, if they decided to speak together in one only voice. It would not be not a minor problem even for the USA.

This being said totally impossible scenario and it is of course here only question of fiction. Quite simply because the member countries of the EU are already very divided between them and the EU is not a nation.

As for your scenario, it was certain that Macron was going to be ridiculous and that he was going to get nothing. Not because it's Macron, but simply because France does not have the geopolitical weight necessary to be able to obtain agreements.

P. S. As for the fact that France would be a minor partner in such an alliance, it would not be the first time, since 1815 we are no longer a major partner. What do you want, the history is thus made.

@Julie4 In brief - I'm on daddy duty now - it is not that French interests would necessarily be threatened immediately. Rather, it is that France's future freedom of action would be circumscribed. That, and the fact that France would be deliberately, should it choose such a path, would be deliberately choosing to subordinate itself to the interests of two bigger powers - at least.

As to France's weight, you underestimate your country. It is not where it was but France remains one of the world's largest economies - ranking 6th - and although in terms of the numbers its armed forces are not what they were, they remain of very high quality and technological sophistication.

That said, Europe's economies are intertwined, but that does not define the whole of a nation's interests. Insert Russia into a German-French alliance, and suddenly France is very much the junior partner. Germany has a bigger economy, Russia has the armed forces and raw materials that supply the German economy.

Suddenly France would not be in a position to call the shots vis-a-vis Germany. The Germans, at the moment, relying on the United States for their security interests while using Russian raw materials and foodstuffs to feed their economy. This leaving France very much out in the cold.

That is why President Macron rolled the dice and went to Russia. If he had been able to cut a deal on Ukraine, at a stroke the Americans would have been marginalized. Poland, the Baltics and the rest would have turned to France for reassurance against Russia - seeing that France had an "in" with Moscow - and Germany would have been sidelined. An economic player but otherwise irrelevant to the Ukraine issue.

Bottom line, just because the time have changed does not mean that national interests, and the diplomatic strategy they drive have changed. Again, to quote Lord Palmerston: "... Our interests are ETERNAL and PERPETUAL, and those interests it is our duty to follow." (Emphasis added.)

Suffice to say that we are marginalized, today or tomorrow in a hypothetical alliance France, Germany, Russia, it does not change much for us.

Even if Macron had obtained an agreement, it would not have changed much either because the countries you mention trust the USA, and they know very well that France cannot provide the protections that the USA can provide. Without forgetting that Poland, Romania, considers the French alliance unreliable because of what happened during the Second World War.

I seriously believe the US wants this invasion to happen. Everywhere these days, I see western media going "Russia will invade any moment". I saw one that even provided the exact day for the invasion (apparently this Wednesday). Can you imagine the arrogance? So used is the US to interfering in other countries' affairs that they now want to provide a schedule for when a country should invade another.

Russia is right that the US is creating hysteria over this matter. Even the Ukrainian president agrees on this point. This sort of thing is provocative. Rather than subjectively analyzing the issues that have led to this incident, media is trying to stoke fears and/or promote violence. I shouldn't be surprised though; the number of questions I see on Quora asking stuff like "can the US invade Russia (or China)?" "Who would win in a war?" etc. shows just how many Americans are disconnected with reality to want/romanticize war, maybe because they think their cities won't get bombed, or foreign troops won't land.

The fact of the matter is that there is absolutely nothing to gain from invading Ukraine. There is no strong friendly faction, and Ukrainian nationalism is currently very high. It would be like a European Afghanistan even without US support. More importantly, Putin is too intelligent to do something like this, especially now. If there was going to be an invasion, no self-respecting invader would be so public, nor wait so long for their target to receive foreign aid. It's like pointing a gun at someone but then first allowing him to reach for his own gun, reload it, and point it at you.

Finally, Russia does not need to invade anyone to show it is serious. It has a very large and advanced nuclear arsenal. By expanding that and linking any arms control talks/agreements to NATO pullback, it maintains close to the same kind of negotiating power as it has now. Putin knows this is an option, and his access to other sources of intelligence likely provides him even more options than this that are superior to war.

In my opinion, the main reason left to maintain the troops at the border is to showcase Western hypocrisy e. g. how we are so accepting of a country's (the US) destabilizing actions (invasions, bombings, military and covert interference) across the world, but throw a fit when another country moves troops within its own borders. I think this event attempts to shine a spotlight on Western exceptionalism, and say "no more".

I don´t think the US needs Russia as an enemy because US has enough problems of its own. Whether he asked them to or not, Russia did help Trump to win in 2016, and that undermines the USA's legitimacy as a democracy, both in the eyes of observers at home and abroad.
