The only way to insure we don't get nuked is to eradicate nukes. Spending money and time on a srarwars system would become obsolete before it was finished. They will just find another way around it. With hypersonic or covert harder to detect methods. At the rate we advance technologically the amount of information that is becoming easier to access makes the threat of a nuclear incident almost inevitable unfortunately. It's not going to take a whole lot to set off this fuse so to speak. It's going to end up in the wrong hands. I just hope that when it does happen cooler heads don't allow it to go further than that and we don't end up panicking and setting off a global nuclear end that we never recover from. We have to get rid of them all.
every country will end up with having nukes before it is over
At some point some kid will make one in his basement or garage that is the scary part.
And it's probably going to be for the views they can get on YouTube.
Getting rid of nuclear weapons is not possible, even with a relatively limited supply of fissionable material it is only a matter of time before the technology and knowledge is wide spread enough that almost any country and eventually individual that wants nukes will get them.
Like all other tools we have to catch up with detection and countermeasure technology, and we been working on that for many decades including star wars program but also including radiation detectors at ports, etc...
U. S. is already working on powerful lasers. Back in the 1980s it was more of a fake program to help scare the Soviets. Now it's real and soon we will have real star wars type lasers on ships, planes and land. That said... nothing is 100%. If Russia launches thousands of nukes, somebody is going to get nuked.
A lot of people are going to get nuked, our existing systems can take out only a few incoming missiles, it was designed to address the issue of rogue states like Iran or North Korea who only have a few ICBMs to shoot at us.
@monorprise I'm amused that the same people who said trying to prepare to survive a nuclear war is foolish are the same people sweating the most now over this Ukraine war situation. They can't have it both ways. Of course if you want to survive nukes, living in the middle of a major city or in a country where you can never get more than 20-30 miles away from a target is going to hurt.
@monorprise You're right about our interceptor tech but that was a misguided idea to begin with if you ask me. Some salesman made a huge commission tho. Mad strategy was a good idea.. but it only works if you have balls AND the other guy is afraid of having his country nuked. Otherwise forget about it. The U. S. isn't perceived as having balls right now and a guy like Putin isn't too afraid in my opinion.
@monorprise also iran had to give up all of its uranium at the time of Saddam Hussein
to Russia. so Putin has that
@Sevenpointfive Doesn't really matter if Putin has it since Russia is one of the leading nuclear powers even without it. At the end of the Cold War the U. S. made a deal with Russia where the U. S. would safeguard lots of weapons grade material but the Russians can access/take any of when they need it for weapons. This was to prevent terrorists from getting it supposedly but also cost the U. S. a lot of money just for the right to shuffle stuff around. Point is that the top 2 nuclear powers play by very different rules than the rest!
This is the third question about nukes that I've come across from you here. Is this an obsession of yours?
To ensure you don't get nuked, stop meddling with other countries's affairs. Plus remove Sleepy Joe.

First off, the US DOES possess an anti-ballistic missile defense shield (actually, at least 3-tier, including short, medium, and long-range weapons). BUT, the system isn't perfect, and could never really ensure that no nuclear weapon made it through (especially with a large scale, or hypersonic strike).
My father worked on the SDI program. To put it bluntly, itd probably be a waste of money. Not only would you have to hit a missile traveling mach 5 youd have to do it hundreds, thousands of times in a short time span which is very very hard. It couldnt be done back then and it almost certainly can't be done now no matter how much money is thrown at it. The best way to not get nuked will almost always be via diplomacy.
The united states does have a defense currently. It involves laser detonation or counterstrikes and warning systems against nukes. Not flawless, but effective.
We been working on that since the 1980's This is where our modern missile defense system came from. It is limited in capability and scale, being mostly designed to deal whit small rogue states with only a few nukes like North Korea.
I don't know Our gov doesn't care about the little man. So unless you have that kind of money to build your own underground cities it probably won't happen.
Our government has been working on such a system on a smaller scale since the 1980's, Star Wars program. Today it actually works, and we could shoot down a handful of nuclear missiles with what we have available.
This would not help us against large scale nuclear powers like China or Russia who could send hundreds or thousands at us. But it was only continued after the cold war ended with the idea of dealing with rouge states like North Korea or Iran.

The US's chickens will come home to roost one day.
It would be suicide to strike America with nukes, if Washington state was its own country it would have the third most nuke in the world, the second we saw a incoming-missile we would obliterate the one doing it
I thought we already had that.
What we SHOULD put up there is something that keeps everybody naked! Wouldn't YOU rather be naked than nuked?
I thought we were already doing that... space force? what are they doing?
We don't have technology to prevent being nuked. Provided it is less than 10 miles in diameter, we may have the technology to alter the path of an asteroid if we have enough time.
We 100% so have a way to stop nukes. We have a laser defense system that can stop and disable missiles mid flight.
I don't think so, if so US would be hitting targets inside Russia.
This is true, although we only have enough to take down a few missiles, not the hundreds, or thousands that a major nuclear power would shoot at us.
That would be just attacking Russia without warning which would be beyond stupid. We aren't involved in the war with the Ukraine and have no reason to just attack. And the laser defense system doesn't let us just choose a spot and use it. It has a range.
Rumor I heard was Ronnie Raygun already did that when he ran the country.
He bluffed Russia with that. They didn't know whether we did or didn't have it.
@888thegreat @douride2
Your both right, Reagan was bluffing on its scale to drive the USSR in to bankruptcy, but we were also actually working on such a system.
They kept working on it on a smaller scale after the cold war ended to deal with Rogue States like North Korea and Iran getting nuclear missiles, which is why today we actually have such a missile defense system capable of shooting down a few incoming ICBMs.
We would be toast if a major power like China, or Russia fired nukes at us due to its limited scale and numbers. But we stand a real chance against North Korea, or Iran.
i don't think anyone would throw nukes. specially not at a nation that also has nukes. because that would just be suicide.
Nukes aren't the problem. Its the ICBM (inter-continental ballistic missile) you need to worry about. Nukes ensure nobody else uses their nukes. ICBM hit faster than they're detected or tracked.
Didn’t Reagan try that and it failed spectacularly?
If there was an ultimate never fail system to protect us from nukes, I think we’d consider it.
No, it would cost trilllions and probably would not work anyway.
Could be one in place already, might have been kept a secret
our new directed energy weapons are exactly that. we can shoot down missiles with ship or ground mounted DEW that cost less than a dollar per shot.
With the building of hypersonic missiles I think it would be a futile endeavor. Pretty hard to hit something going 3800 miles an hour.
I know a week ago or so we put up a satlattie for reconnaissance. Plus we have a branch of Army up there there too. I saw the top Generals say US thinks they can win a nuclear war
The military has stuff that we will never know they have till they have to use it
i thought we already had star wars? what happened?
The evil empire took over
no but we abandoned the project in the 90's for some reason
