From a geopol ally view point I would wonder at 30,000 US troops on that border. I also wonder at if/why South Korea can't have sufficient troops on the border.

I do think it is good to have some US troops there for a deterring factor as should North Korea cross the border it is not just an attack on south Korea. After Ukraine it has become apparent dictators like Putin and Xi are becoming assertive and likely Kim Jong too.

It is in the interests of western nations, that South Korea (yes they are in the east but have adopted the core western ideas) isn't picked off. I would also suggest that the world has changed from the 50's when the US was the last man standing after WW2 and had most of the World's GDP.

So It seems me that other Western countries who fought against North Korea's invasion such as Australia should have continuing contingents there, if there is risk on that border. Generally there should be a lot of rethinking.

As to borders, Australia is fortunate to have a 100% maritime border but every time a catch and release regime has been adopted, people smugglers tell potential customers the borders are open and there are huge surges. You have to have secure borders and processing camps to establish genuine refugees. Famously one female 'refugee' here demanded a boob enhancement job. How good is that as a refugee claim :)

Why isn't those soldiers south Koreans by now? They should have no problem guarding their own border. It's enough to be allies to prevent border crossing, because even if they don't face the full force immediately, it will arrive later and make the war unwinnable.
