Do rural Americans (or rural people in general) look down on technology and people who succeed better in that field of work and in cities?

I often have this conception of rural Americans that they have a strong dislike for technology and the people who work in that field, looking at them as "unmanly" and unproductive to society.

A lot of rural people hate cities, but I've never noticed a dislike for tech. It's the cities themselves that people hate.

Living in the country requires a different set of skills. College degrees of any type are pretty worthless and a waste of time in the country. They don't have anything against it, it's just not what people need to know. Living in rural areas requires a lot more self sufficiency. That's not the kind of thing you learn in college.

I'll be honest, I do somewhat think less of people who can't do anything for themselves. That's not a rural view though. As far as I'm concerned everyone should know some trade skills. It's the basics of life. If someone knows NOTHING about cars for example I think they are lacking something important. Same if they can't do a simple repair in a house, like fixing a leaky faucet. And yes, I do consider it less "manly" if they can't do anything for themselves. Same for women for that matter, although less manly isn't the word I'd use.

I think big cities are very de-humanizing. Humans just aren't made to live like that. With more and more tech, humans are becoming less human. I really believe it's behind a whole lot of problems, like mass shootings for example. If those people were actually out doing real work, I seriously doubt if most of them would do those shootings. They wouldn't have all the stress and pent up energy that boils inside them.

I don’t know how rural were talking, but I live in the country, the nearest towns population is about 15,000 and most of us like technology even the ones out in the country mostly from what I can tell the problem with technology stems from the older generations, but even they are getting into it now with the advent of Facebook. Even my parents are on it and they’re nearly 60. So it really depends on who it is because different people have different preferences, but I will say that out here there is a sentiment going on that hard work is the way. Although my parents never had a problem with me getting a computer job and going to college. In fact, they wanted that for me I did not like school though. So I’m learning to code very very slowly off the Internet. I mean I’m good with computers, but when it comes down to exact coding, I am not great there yet, but I can operate mostly any program that has been written in English. I’m sorry for the rant. Rural people are probably more reliant on technology. Social media has helped many with the mental problems associated with isolation. It's made it possible to link up spread our villages and farms for social events.
Even on farms computerisation is everywhere. Tractors are linked to satellites and can alter fertilisers to suit each metre of land. There's automatic Milking machines the cow vists on their own that do everything, no human needed.

People that live in cities are poor. Let me put it in perspective for you… A roughly 2,000 acre farm I know of has $156 million worth of coquina that can be mined in it’s border. Another $27 million of construction fill will be mined in the process. After the mining is completed in a couple years, it will be turned into approximately 3,200 residential homes and 180,000 square feet of commercial space which will be sold and rented to poor city people that want to live in the burbs. You can work your entire life in the top paying technical positions in the city and you won’t even scratch the surface of what some rural folks make in a couple of years. You’ve been lied to your entire life.

Rural Americans use technology. For some of them, they probably use more than you. A lot of them have solar powered homes and cars hooked up to the grid. The have GPS guided tractors. The have smartphones and smarthomes. They have NEST with central A/C that uses a heat pump. They have energy star rated homes.

That's because the people from cities do not know or understand about the ways and how to survive in rural areas.

It's a balance, high tech might make your life easier but only when it works. If it's expensive, unreliable and if it prevents you from doing the old fashioned way. You will get haters.

No, a lot of people that live in the midwest are really technical people. Even in agriculture there is a lot of technological advance ments that are used and people have top have the knowhow to utilize it.

My redneck farmer 4 generation manufactures have been utilizing most recent technologies, I've seen a Radio Shack computer, since they came out. And the walkie talkie size cell phones-seen one of those.-Both of those are in storage. The best I could tell the rednecks starting using technology in the 1970s
