Is 9 years too much?

I do think the sentencing is excessive, however Griner won't even serve a year of that. The US is trading some Russian spies to get Griner out. I do think, however, that Griner is an idiot and very arrogant. Griner probably thought because they don't care in the US about drugs and marijuana, that Russia also won't care and that breaking the law is "no big deal." Complete hubris.
You shouldn't go to a country, blatantly break the law cause you like to "touch grass" and then act all shocked when they prosecute you for it. ESPECIALLY a sh*t country like Russia (nothing against the people there). Griner just thought they'd be no issues with it, and now is regretting that choice, especially while Russia is in the middle of a war and have lost all of their world allies (even China sees Russia as too hot to handle).
Yeah, nine years is too much, but that's what you get for being stupid and thinking "a little pot won't hurt anyone." F*cking stoner trash! Just to save Griner and marine Paul Whelan, the US is going to have to trade an ACTUAL bad guy, "the merchant of death," Russian arms dealer and all around murderer Viktor Bout. I'm not even sure if I want the US to make the trade, but at least Paul Whelan deserves to be let go. The US shouldn't have to trade a terrorist to get back an idiot pothead who thinks they're above the law.
Yes but Russia has its own laws and as a US citizen in a foreign country you should recognise the freedoms and privileges you enjoy in the US may not be available so respect the country and obey the law while there.

Even by American standards Britney's sentence was really excessive. 9 years for having a vape cartridge full of CBD oil on her person? I've heard about peeps here in Canada and the US that got 2 to 3 years for doing stuff way worse than that.
Is she the one who refused to stand for the American flag?

Unlike the US, Russia takes its laws seriously and holds foreigners accountable for their crimes. I realize that National sovereignty and the rule of law might come as a rude awakening to those living in America since the mid 1990’s, but some other countries actually enforce their laws and don’t make or increase exceptions to their policies based on how many woke boxes you can check. Shocking, I know, but there was even a point before the early 1960’s that America respected its own sovereignty and laws too!
A sovereign state is a political entity represented by one centralized government that has supreme legitimate authority over territory. She went into their territory, broke their rules, and got caught so she has to face their consequences. It's pretty fucking simple if you don't have down syndrome.
Doesn’t matter if it’s “too much” or not. She committed a crime. Now she has to do the time. Nobody made her do it. She wasn’t framed. Her dumb, entitled ass took a banned substance into a foreign country. The only important question is this: will she learn her lesson? If not, let her rot until she figures it out.
I have no idea what's the actual reason why she's in jail, I don't buy this dope story.
It's russia we are talking after all.
I honestly think "useful idiots" get what they deserve from their former allies, she had way more luck than trotsky and a lot of stalin's palls.
It would be in the US.
In Russia being a smuggler could no shit get gunship helicopters and FSB agents sent after you. They take controlled substances much more seriously than we do and are under no obligation to mimic our laws.
I think it was too harsh, but I understand why it happened. Given her behavior the passed few years, I think Britney will benefit from a little international perspective.
it is too much but I have not heard of Russian citizens getting the same sentence for drug possession. If that is what most people get then it is what it is.
When in Rome. Do as the Romans do!
Research the laws of the country that you will be going to and don’t expect to be be rescued when you break their laws.
If she was in America she would get a minimum of 10 years. Nobody is mentioning how much jail time Americans get in America for breaking drug laws.
It is legal here in America
@NorthwestRider it is not legal in many states and she would get a stiff punishment in many states for trafficking drugs.
Everyone knows other countries have very strict drug laws, so you do something stupid then you have no one but yourself if I did it you would not hear about it
I agree with her getting in trouble but 9 and a half freaking years is too much.
9 years is too light, she deserves life in prison
this lgbtq hore really thought going against America would benefit her LOL
No, she should have been given a life sentece, no parole no trade
I don't agree with the sentencing. But the woman went into a nation that prohibits drug paraphernalia. Why did she travel into Russia in the first place.
Not familiar with Russian law. I agree she’s guilty.
Lol are you working with the Russians?
Nope
No. The sentencing is outrageous, but it's Russia which is a p. o. s nation.
I totally agree, Its Russia's laws, she is not in the woke US right now where they cater to people like her.
It isn't but given it is Russia, I'm surprised it isn't longer. I hear it's 15 years to speak out against the war against NATO there.
Sorry I mean it's too much
Yeah, it seems very harsh
Nope because I hate Russia. Free Britney
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer woman.
no , he deserved it
britney spears is not in russia
yeah fuck her let her ass rot there
No not at all
9 years is ridiculous
