I am of two minds on this. It was weed. 9 and a half years for weed is just too much to me. On that same token, here in the states she might have gotten worse depending on the state she was in.

On the other side of it, she's the most anti American athlete i have seen, I honestly believe that if she has that kind of attitude toward the US, she should be left to suffer the consequences of her actions.

I do think the sentencing is excessive, however Griner won't even serve a year of that. The US is trading some Russian spies to get Griner out. I do think, however, that Griner is an idiot and very arrogant. Griner probably thought because they don't care in the US about drugs and marijuana, that Russia also won't care and that breaking the law is "no big deal." Complete hubris.

You shouldn't go to a country, blatantly break the law cause you like to "touch grass" and then act all shocked when they prosecute you for it. ESPECIALLY a sh*t country like Russia (nothing against the people there). Griner just thought they'd be no issues with it, and now is regretting that choice, especially while Russia is in the middle of a war and have lost all of their world allies (even China sees Russia as too hot to handle).

Also, some digging into this will reveal that Griner is an anti-American, far-left SJW.

Just to save Griner and marine Paul Whelan, the US is going to have to trade an ACTUAL bad guy, "the merchant of death," Russian arms dealer and all around murderer Viktor Bout. I'm not even sure if I want the US to make the trade, but at least Paul Whelan deserves to be let go. While looking for articles on this, I found that even Liberal Quora is trashing Griner and stating how you can't hate America and then ask for its help when you get arrested for willingly breaking the law in a hostile foreign nation. When even left-leaning Quora thinks you're an idiot, you done f*cked up. They also made a brilliant point:
"Lots of Americans are detained in Russia and they don't have the privilege of being famous black lesbians that supports Biden's woke messaging. If actual patriots aren't going to be rescued, then why should Griner get special privilege?"

You left out the pretty important detail that Russia is not the US, and generally not a country to screw around with, especially when it comes to smuggling. Russia has been known to send gunship helicopters and paramilitary forces after suspected smugglers for even petty amounts of contraband. She's lucky her junk was found while going through a security checkpoint rather than a tipoff from say a disgruntled opponent or teammate.

To me, it's less about her nauseating anti-americanism and a lot more about the fact she knew this was illegal and did it anyway. The entitlement complex of this brat is abhorrent. But the idea that anyone thinks we should get her extradited to the US in exchange for releasing terrorists and gun runners back to Russia is laughable in a sane world, and the fact we're talking about Griner rather than for example news reporters and journalists who have been detained in Russia just for affiliation since the war in Ukraine broke out and haven't actually broken any laws is pathetic.

I guess she claimed she packed the canabis oil by accident but it seems if you were going to another country where you might be uncertain of the laws you would be extra careful about what you pack. I also wouldn't go to Russia as an American, it just sounds like a bad idea.

Doesn't matter what the penalty might be here in the US because she wasn't in the US. She knew she was in the USSR, she knew the laws would probably be different, and she didn't bother to determine whether it was legal. She shouldn't get special treatment in a foreign court because she is American, and she shouldn't get special treatmenet because she is an athlete.

You go into a foreign country KNOWING what's legal and what's not, thinking you're an American and can get away with that... screw her! Russia could care less if she's an American athlete. She broke the law (should be the same way here in the US too!). I don't care if it's weed, heroin, or if she ran someone over in a car. You break foreign laws and you're now under THEIR jurisdiction.

Russian laws against drugs is a LOT less forgiving than the US - especially now with those idiot liberal DA's that pick and choose which laws they want to enforce. Maybe if the US was FAR more strict about drugs, the number of fentanyl deaths would likely be a LOT less.

As far as I'm concerned, she can stay in a Russian jail. Maybe now, she'll consider just how much freedom we have in the US and not piss on that freedom when the national anthem is played. Serves her right.

Who says she's suffering? She now gets to live for free in socialist utopia for the next decade. Think about it. In prison, you have government providing lodging and meals, no one is any richer than anyone else, and everyone's carbon footprint is minimal. So why in the world would people think she'd want to go home to the racist fascist hellhole she hates?

One would hope that this experience has finally taught her to appreciate her home country, warts and all, but it probably won't. Nevertheless, I think the sentence is too harsh and the US government should negotiate her release as long as it's not in exchange for someone dangerous like the "Merchant of Death", which the Biden Administration seems to be hell bent on releasing one way or the other.
