Girls, Toxic Masculinity - How would you define it?

And, how would you describe Non-Toxic Masculinity?

I know there's a sort of internet war between men and women, and I stand by the philosophy that everyone should be assessed as individuals rather than broad gender-based generalizations. But, I'm curious to see what you have to say about this concept of "Toxic Masculinity" that seems to be a term used a lot during this battle of the sexes.

There is no such thing as toxic masculinity.

There are "toxic behaviours", regardless of gender. And toxic is a rather lame title. To be more descriptive, we simply have behaviours and traits that we prefer to socially control.

Selfishness, too much greed, uncontrolled and misplaced anger, lack of empathy, etc.

Both genders can display all those behaviours, sometimes in exactly the same way, sometimes in different ways. None of those behaviours are unique to men and "masculinity" to create an entire term for it.

I would go as far as calling that term sexist.

Hmm. I’ve never thought of the term as sexist, but from how you’ve outlined everything, I can see that now.

There is nothing masculine that is toxic just like there is nothing feminine that is toxic. Being “too masculine” or “too feminine” will never result in toxicity because toxicity is a separate thing entirely.

Masculinity is masculinity, femininity is femininity, and toxicity is toxicity.

The term “toxic masculinity” is then a sexist term to arbitrarily associate masculinity with toxicity and cause people to mistake one for the other.

When I think of a toxic man, I think of a man that sexually objectifies women. He thinks connecting with his emotions is weakness and he has an overinflated ego to mask his insecurities, instead of dealing with them.

Men feel like being a rock is all being a man is. But women want a safe space to be vulnerable and comforted by as well. They want a father for their children, not a statue.

There’s a nice comforting brand of masculinity I really love — gentlemanly and protective. I guess a little possessive in a way but not illogical or violent.


Toxic is anything obsessive of violent.
