Is it because the status quo favors white southern states over liberal states.
The Constitution is a living document but it was designed so that it could be ammended but it tkes more thsn a simple majority to do this. This was done for a reason. The founding fathers knew that if all the power was concentrated in the cities, then the middle of the country would never get fir representation. The Constitutution is really the only thing saving this country right now. If somehow the democrats were to abolish it the country would be finished for good.

As a libertarian who votes Republican, it's because the current liberal establishment would love nothing more than to completely remove your constitutional rights.
And let me be clear, I'm fully for reforming the constitution, it direly needs it. But the answer to your question is fear that it would set precedent that you can just go in and change the constitution, of which the democratic establishment would love to exploit.
I'm sure to some it also has something to do with tradition and respect for our forefathers or something, but I'd imagine its mostly just concern for exploitation. There are Republicans who do support a balanced budget amendment, so your thesis is false.
They generally aren't for diving headfirst into changing the constitution. Not every change made to it was good.
oh, they're for reforming it alright... if it'll help them.
