according to some people this is because Putin is afraid of Biden and not afraid of Trump

Trump was supposed to dismantle NATO. Don made it pretty clear multiple times his intentions but he was politically bankrupt on domestic politics after covid19. Old fat people died in mass, young people who never voted before just voted against don.

This has been asked and answered here probably 2 dozen times already but since you ask so many smart questions and have such an incredible thirst for knowledge, here's the answer.

Putin doesn't actually care about Ukraine. He cares about NATO. That he believes is the real threat to Russia. Invading Ukraine is just to create a bigger geographical buffer between Russia and NATO member countries.

While Trump was in office, Trump was dead set on weakening NATO, creating divisions and literally trying to destroy it from within. A weakened NATO fighting each other and at each other's throat's is Putin's wet dream. There was no reason for Putin to do anything while Trump was president cause Trump was already doing the work of destroying NATO for him and he wouldn't want to distract from that.

With Trump gone, Biden has set on repairing relationships, reaffirming the U. S. commitment to NATO and unifying NATO in a way almost never seen before. With that happening and NATO getting stronger and more cohesive under Biden, Putin turned to the Ukraine which was always plan B.

To suggest a crafty former KGB chief was "scared of" or "afraid of" a bumbling doofus like Trump who makes all kinds of threats and never follows through on any of them is completely laughable.

Regardless of what you read about Ukrainian military prowess they lost. Russia accomplished its goals of annexing those provinces.
