Mostly they sell drugs. Or at least it started as an organization selling alcohol during prohibition and illegal drugs were the next natural step after prohibition was lifted. I don't know if they still bother selling drugs though. The only reason to deal drugs is to make money and if you're resigned to illegal activity anyway, money laundering, wire fraud, and real estate fraud are so much more lucrative, so much easier, and far less enforced. So my guess is that's what they've shifted to.

Depends on what mafia you’re talking about. Most of them do the same stuff across the board w a few exceptions. Selling drugs, prostitution, kidnappings, murder (hits), extortion, intimidation, drug trafficking, arson, counterfeiting, gambling, tax fraud, racketeering, loan sharks, infiltrating legitimate business.
