Why do people like Trump?

I am not going to lie. I don't like Trump at all. The election was not rigged, people did not want a mad man running the country anymore. He also doesn't support women's rights and basic healthcare.

Trump’s status as a political outsider, his outspoken nature and his willingness to upend past customs and expectations of presidential behavior made him a constant focus of public attention, as well as a source of deep partisan divisions.

I am not a Democratic or anti republican. I'm not a massive fan of Biden but I don't hate him like Trump. And yes I know I am going to get loads of hate but this is my opinion and you have yours.

I don't think Trump is the future nor do I think is Biden. This is because of all of the distraction or baggage that another Trump presidency would bring with it - the media and Democrats would, in my opinion, become catatonic about another Trump presidency and all discussions about him would be very negative. Not that a DeSantis presidency wouldn't stir up the establishment as well, but Gov. DeSantis is far more articulate and, I believe, far more logical and a far better leader.

If you're a Trump supporter, I want to know why. If you don't like Trump or have any other opinions you're welcome to comment as well!

What is the id?
The id is the primitive and instinctive component of personality. We all have these dark impulses, but we keep them controlled due to the inhibition center of the brain which prevents us from doing things that may endanger us. When the Id says "I want that! I want to do that! I want to say that!", the inhibition center says "NO! You will get us into trouble if you get/do/say that!"

And so you don't get/do/say that...

But Trump doesn't have that problem. He has "Narcissistic Personality Disorder" (**) which has the effect that his inhibition center inadequately controls his Id. To him, everything that he says or does is OK unless it truly and clearly endangers him. And, to a large extent, Trump's father Fred was the same way. They both learned that violating the law is OK if you have enough money to tie up the issue in courts for years.

Worse, in a way, since Trump is a public figure, his behavior is rewarded! And this goes to what I said at the top: Trump lets our Ids live vicariously through him. So, the things he gets or says or does are often the same things many people want as well. The difference is they have functioning inhibition centers in their brains and they don't have the money to protect them from harm that Trump does. So, they worship him - he is getting/doing/saying the things that they want to but can't do themselves. Thus, they adore him because they believe that he will get/say/do for them all the same things that their Ids want but that their inhibition centers or lack of power prevent them from getting.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

I can't stand the guy but I voted for him twice as a lesser of the evils. Even though I hate the guy, I sort of understand what people like about him. He had a reputation as a"can-do" kind of guy who wouldn't let things stand in his way. Sure, he's had failures in his life, but that's partly because he likes a challenge and takes on things that nobody else will, or things that others tried and failed.

A lot of Republicans were dissatisfied with what Republican politicians were accomplishing, or more correctly what they weren't accomplishing. People thought Republicans in Congress should have taken a stronger stance on things and not caved in so easily to pressure. People thought and hoped Trump would take a hard stance and not cave in.

We will never know what Trump could have done in office. The media and Democrats wouldn't even allow him to function and do his job. And very few things he did do weren't reported. He's a workaholic. In four years he probably did as much work as most president do in either. Yet how many people can name things he did in that time other than a very small number of things the media decide to inundate the population with?

I'm willing to bet that very few people know what he even did in office. I'm also willing to bet that most people don't realize just how Democrat his policies were. It's understandable to hate him as a person - he's an asshole. But to hate hate his politics, without even knowing what they are is the result of the media frenzy, not any knowledge about what he did.

One of the best things he did in office was attempt to slow the growth of big mega corporations. Everyone thinks that because he's a businessman that he would love big corporations. He's the opposite of that. He is the only president in my lifetime who actively tried to stop the growth of mega corporations though mergers and acquisitions.

What else? Oh, he's the most peaceful US president in my lifetime, and possibly in the last hundred years. Isn't that what people wanted? Peace?

I'll just list my reasons since I doubt I could tell you why everyone who liked him, liked him.

What I liked him

• One of the few politicians I agreed with politically, take that with a grain of salt since there's also a lot I disagreed with him on
• He somewhat ran on being anti establishment in 2016 and the first few years of his presidency
• Blunt and impulsive, he called people out who needed to be called out (which, after Obama, was needed). He didn't care who offended and said a bunch of dumb things which were obviously taken by the media.
• Economically, his policies was a Double-edged sword which people were doing better under him than now but, as happens with a lot of republicans, he didn't prepare for the recession which was going to happen regardless. There's also the bonus he was a business man and not a career politician.

What I disliked about him

• His impulsivity, he said a lot of unnecessary dumb things which put off a lot of people and was easy to be misinterpreted. After he lost the 2020 election, he went on a crybaby rant over losing and claimed the election was stolen. Usually this wouldn't be a bother but he made a brand on being a winner and instead, lost bitterly.
• Towards the last year of his presidency, when covid became a concern for most people, he cowered and took many actions that I would say were also uncharacteristic of him. He became too nice and allowed the country to get financially ruined by the pandemic. He also boasted about the vaccine, which he would have obviously hated had it happened under Biden
• A lot of republican like to call him anti-war since he technically a war under his administration but he is definitely not anti-war. The War in Afghanistan was still ongoing under his presidency and so was the intervention in Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and in the Somali Civil War. He also escalated tensions with plenty of nations. This and my previous points are my two biggest reasons for disliking him. He was not anti-war.

I think they bought into the brand and the persona and the rhetoric. It resulted in a cultish devotion. He identified the right things to say to them but really had no idea how to achieve them. We lost jobs under his watch. The trade deficit widened. We added $7.8 trillion in deficit spending. Crime rates didn’t improve. He even deported illegals at a slower rate than Obama did. However, if you ask his supporters, they believe he improved the country in all these areas. The whole thing is kind of a fantasy that exists in their heads.

Honestly, I think in their heart of hearts, many people in this country are very socially ignorant, and those people LOVED that a guy came along and basically tried to push the “oh, no, you guys aren’t the assholes! It’s the people calling you out for being assholes who are the actual assholes!”, which any sane and decent person can see is PREPOSTEROUS, but the “sane & decent” demographic isn’t what Trump targeted. My problem has never really been Trump, he’s just one man, and there’s not much he can do to affect my life, even as president. What I hated was the attitude he seemed to inspire in people, this loud, “I don’t care if you’re offended” douchebaggery, that isn’t so much offensive to me as it is juvenile and annoying. They got caught up in the sizzle of the circus the MAGA movement put on, I don’t most of these people were vigorously supporting John McCain or Mitt Romney in previous elections. What’s really alarming to me is that some people still don’t see what a grifter this dude is NOW. I’ll give you a pass for getting caught up in 2015, but it’s almost 2023 now, and if you can’t see the trouble this guy causes or inspires, and the negative overall impact he has on our citizens’ attitudes (whether you’re for him or against him), then I really just don’t even know what to tell you at that point, I don’t think I could convince the same person that the sky is blue.

I think that’s all self-important perspective from our own species, and I’m not really in favor of anything that treats humans as some superior being on the planet. We would need months and maybe even years of debate to move me off of the position that humans are just another animal, no more or less valuable than any other organism. I believe in nature, above all else.

With that said….. animals, including us humans, need to be in either one of two conditions: completely free, or under complete control. We seem to be attempting to do something in between, and I believe that that will be a perpetual exercise in futility, only exacerbated by population growth, and will continue to manifest themselves while humans try to wishfully think them to just be “social problems” or “political problems”, when the reality, in my opinion, is that this is just the evidence that absolutely none of this “society as we know it” is meant to be.

To engage with your second paragraph, there exists NO total control, nor freedom. We are all controlled/ constrained by various forces, including nature. Humans, animals, even the world, are controlled by the laws of physics, and time. Animals aren't free from hunger, deprivation, fear, or death. In that way we are the same. By that same token we are not without agency. Humans, to a far greater extent than animals can exert a measure of control over the world around us AND ourselves. This isn't an illusion of control, but it isn't all encompassing. We can stop the oceans with Levies, but in time these levies will fall.
You seem to believe as Rousseau did, that "natural man" was free of all the maladies that exist in society today... That's heartbreakingly ignorant. You may look at a 30-minute special on an Amazonian Tribe and think to yourself, "wow, they really don't have the problems we have." Perhaps, but they also kill, and are killed. They also go without, and suffer in many ways. Society, or social controls, aren't responsible for all suffering, most are simply intrinsic in existing as imperfect, contradictory, and violent mortals.

Corporate giants want EVERYONE, no matter which party they support, to purchase their goods. If you strongly align with one or the other, you lose half your market.

A great example of that is Under Armour's sales in the USA. From 2010 to 2017, they showed growth in every quarter. Then in 2017, CEO Kevin Plank endorsed Trump's administration policies and faced product boycotts and all sorts of backlash, even from the athlete's they sponsored like Steph Curry, who called him an ass. LOL Since 2017, Under Armour has seen only 2 significant quarterly growths and their chart is flat.

Are they still making money? Sure they are, but what was the point of supporting someone openly who was already elected? All he accomplished at the very least was alienating half of his US customer base.

Trump wasn’t perfect and he had plenty of flaws but I felt he actually cared about the regular working people as much as a rich businessman could. Also everyone who came out hating him I already despised for other reasons so it was easy to come to his defense. His record though is impressive- even if few credit him. He cooled tensions with North Korean, Russia, Iran, pushed the Abraham Accords for peace in the Middle East. Destroyed ISIS. Created a plan for pulling out of Afghanistan and was the first president in decades to not start a new war in office. Domestically his energy policy (which was an extension of Obama’s to be fair) made us energy independent with a surplus. Low gas prices, record low unemployment, GDP was high. Illegal border crossing plummeted. His criminal justice reform was very progressive and a great start. He put judges in place that have led to unconstitutional laws being overturned and the expansion of gun rights. Taxes were lower and 2018 and 2019 were my most successful years of my life. Even his initial response to Covid was better than most countries who went full authoritarian.


I have no hope for the future with people like Biden in power.

So... I'm going to try to answer this to best of my ability (because I'm not a Trump fan either). I would say that people like Trump because they see Trump as doing what's best for the country's economic and political standing in the world. Biden is more focused on Intl. cooperation. I don't know that one stance is necesssarily better than the other, but I will say that America has greater control over its own actions than it does over the actions of other countries, and international interdependence hasn't historically offered much protection (see the WHO and UN through the Covid crisis as a prime example, and those situations happened at a smaller scale constantly, with the same incompetence).

One of Trump's achievements is that while he was in office, Blacks, inner city Blacks specifically saw the highest rates of employment.

Three of the things that no one can deny about Trump are that (1) he placed American interests before the interests of other countries, (2) that regardless of whether he inheirited a good economy from Obama or repaired the economy himself; he absolutely acclerated economic growth, and (3) that Trump didn't start any new wars (it took Biden all of a month to start bombing Libya).

Trump's time in office also saw a considerable decrease in Carbon emissions, even though Trump was absolutely NOT an environmentalist.

Everything I just mentioned is pretty indisputable. Now, whether you think American protectionism is a good thing is a totally separate matter, but I can certainly see where Trump would have his appeal.

I think that regardless of whether Trump is a good or nice guy, the question we have to be asking is whether American interests are best served by collectivism, or thinking in terms of doing our own thing.

I voted for Trump twice, but I don't think he's the best candidate for 2024.

Having said that, it's not so much his policies that he's popular, as it is him not accepting as a precondition every point of view of the Left (e. g. "women's rights," "basic healthcare") prior to being a "legitimate" politician.

Conservatives have had lukewarm politicians who are at least palatable to the Left for my entire life- we're sick of it. We wanted someone who would shake things up, and never apologize for it- he was it.

I never really liked him. I never watched the Apprentice but I voted for him because the alternative was too frightening after 8 years of Obama. He did talk about all the things I had been talking about for the last 20 year. Things like bringing jobs back to America, securing the southern border, getting tariffs on Chinese goods, developing domestic energy and other policies that he was in favor of. If figure even if he pulled off one or two of these we would be better off. He ended up doing a lot more than that.
