Why did Edward Snowden betray his country?

I doubt I'm going to be the only one to say this, but- he didn't. The oath of the NSA specifically says they have to defend the Constitution, and there's no provision for "unless it's my boss threatening it". He went to Greenwald and made his report, and then, knowing that staying in the country would mean death at the hands of the traitors in the government, he fled to Ecuador- or tried to, until they shut down air traffic all over the world (which puts paid to the idea that they hadn't actually done anything wrong, unless you're going to say that it was pure coincidence that a hundred fifty countries in all four hemispheres did it all at once), and he was forced to seek sanctuary in Russia.
I suppose you could make the argument that he betrayed the country by taking the job in the first place, but he didn't KNOW how bad it was, and whistleblowing isn't ANYBODY'S first response to seeing someone put one foot over the line- I speak from experience, here- you tell them to stop, and it's only when you become convinced that it's bad enough to take action do you do so.
He didn't betray his country. He betrayed the government. The majority of American people support him because he exposed government corruption. He didn't let the law get in the way of doing what was right. The man still had morals.
They made him give them some information in exchange for granting him asylum. It's not like he gave them information of personal people. I don't care what government secrets he gave them, and whatever it was, it's not harming us
I appreciate your concern, but I think we'll be okay
He didn't. The NSA's legality is very, very questionable, to say the least. A democracy cannot function if the government operates in secret and the public is misinformed. Snowden did not endanger the lives of Americans, the current and past administrations did with their reckless, dishonorable behavior. Snowden did not undermine the government's credibility, they did that to themselves by lying, manipulating, and covering up the truth. That's on them, not Snowden.
Exactly, thank you
No way, no how. He did us all a HUGE service. He confirmed our worse suspicions & proved that when it comes down to it, IF the government CAN do something, it WILL do something, rights & laws be damned!

I don't know if I'd call him a hero. Personally I think what he did was stupid and he should waited to say something after seeing the information used for something other than terrorism or human trafficking.
Now they're gonna tighten everything up there and we'll never have a whistle blower.
He also didn't seem to really give a shit about any of the documents he released. He probably could have redacted some of it.
He didn't betray lol he told everyone what people already thought but was just a conspiracy, we're being watched its something we all deserve to know. They came after him and he ran to another country for protection.
Their was no reason we should not all know as people some random is watching us & just cause he's DIA, CIA or NSA and whatever other Organizations out there is behind the screen monitoring doesn't mean their not weird or creepy.
Betray? Lol. No, Snowden is a hero. He had the balls to stand up to a rogue two face government that has zero fucks about Americans or for the world that matter. So again, no Snowden is hero that more people should emulate.
Edward Snowden in no way betrayed his country. What he did instead was to make public the war crimes that his country had committed in the hope that the people that committed the war crimes would be removed from office and things would change. All that really changed is that the government went after snowden. Snowden is a hero not a criminal.
No. He spoke the truth and the corrupt powers that be sought to destroy him. He’s a hero in my book.
He didn't betray the country. He is not only a "patriotic whistleblower" but also a people's person. He did us all a great service and exposed the governments abusive involvements. He is A hero.
Most people however couldn't care any less about how the government turns technology against us.
He actually kept his oath of office to the people by whistle blowing on the government. He didn't betray the country he actually saved it.
He didn't betray his country, only betrayed the NSA who was illegally spying on us, it was through Snowden we found out they were illegally spying on us. We need laws that both protect whistleblowers instead of punishing them.
He didn't betray his country, he betrayed the government that was betraying his country.
No he betrayed the government who were betraying the Constitution.
Because his country betrayed their citizens
He didn't. He was a hero to his country by exposing corruption.
Because he is a traitor and gets to spend the rest of his life in Russia
Generally when the media hates you, it's because you did something good.
Imagine unironically believing this horseshit.
He's far less dangerous and less traitorous than most politicians in positions of power, right at this very moment.
I don't think he did. He betrayed the government to let his country know what they were doing behind their backs.
He is my hero. So is Julian Assange !!! They did not betray anyone.
His conscience was conflicting with his principles.
Judging by the question, the asker probably loves Big Brother and believes 2 + 2 = 5.
Politicians do it all the time. Hardly anyone notices. Why he was highlighted. no idea.
betray? So you think its right to hide everything from the public
Cuz most likely or turned to other countries side
*help his country
There was to much the government was hiding
someone payed him well
Really? When?
Lol, he didn’t.
he didn't.
He did not.
