and not just business owners, republicans want everyone to supposedly work hard for low wages, no healthcare, and no rights to defend to yourself from corrupt corporate managers who would own you if slavery was allowed and no I don't care if democrats started the KKK.
A business exists to turn profit for its owners/owner. That's it. That's the bottom line. Managers are hired to maximize that profit by assembling and manipulating a workforce to achieve that. They are not concerned with whether or not your wages are fair. If they increase your wages it's because they see value in keeping you in accordance with the company's goals-- turning profit and hence do not want to lose you to their competition, or if the government increases things like minimum wage and they have to step in line with that.
They don't care if you make a living wage. They don't care about your bills. They don't care about your hopes, your dreams, or your aspirations. They care about the company's singular goal, which is profit. Owners pressure their managers, managers pressure their supervisors, and supervisors pressure their workers in order to achieve that aim. People expect the company is going to do nice things for them out of the goodness of their hearts. They will not. If they don't have to increase your wages, they won't. If they do, then they're doing it for them, not for you. This is why unions were started because business owners will squeeze the fucking life out of you to make more money if you let them. That's the hard truth.

What you say is mostly true in entry level jobs. Jobs that require little to no real skills. If you quit, it's no problem because they can train your replacement in a day or two usually in a day. There is no reason for the company to offer benefits or good pay.
If you want good pay and benefits, learn a trade, learn a skill.
In highschool I worked a minimum wage job. I realized I needed something that would make a company want to hire me and not someone else as opposed to "this person will do."
I went to college (worked my way through) and obtained a degree in a field that employers looked for graduates. I have excellent pay and benefits. Why? Because I contribute significantly to the company's revenue and profit.20 Reply
+1 yA business exists to generate profit - it will always go for the cost-effective option. But high employee turnover can cost a company more, decreasing profit margins and productivity.
I’ve noticed across New Zealand and Australia job market companies are shifting their recruitment approach by offering; better hours, competitive pay, work-from-home options, period leave, male parental leave, work trips, massages, health cover, free counselling etc.
I think the trend here is people seeking better companies with better benefits - and the options are there. But my opinion is based on white collared jobs in the ANZ market.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yGreed. Companies look at labor as a commodity to exploit in pursuit of greater wealth. That’s why the labor movement was so important in this country. It brought a lot of people out of poverty and helped build the middle class. If more U. S. workers embraced unions again, they could improve their economic lot. The dirty secret is that low wage workers often qualify for public assistance. So society basically subsidizes these workers to maximize company profits. A union is the only effective way to fight that.

A business must be profitable or they go out of business. Business will pay you as much as you agreed to work for. The owners and managers care about the workers and they would like to pay more, but if they did they can't make a profit and they go out of business. Workers should be willing to work long hours for minimum pay so the business will not go out of business. If the business cannot make a profit, they go out of business and all of the workers are unemployed. Workers are willing to work long hours at low pay because having a salary is better then being unemployed.
A business cares about the workers but the workers don't care about the business. Workers are not willing to work longer hours at less pay to help the business make a profit. And, workers are so selfish that if they find another job at higher pay, they will leave in a heartbeat even if leaving harms the business.

+1 yBusiness and work can be seen as slavery by another name depending on your philosophy. You as a business want to take home as much money/profits/assets as possible at the end of each transaction. That why you would want a cheaper workforce. Competitive markets drive less wages if you want to sell at a competitive price you will have to make the cut somewhere and your not going to do it within your profits but in your workforce. How can I make more by spending less. Greed drives this ambitions. You can cut your profits to the point where you are satisfied with what you earn and put it back in your workforce but the reality is not many will make sacrifices at their level.

Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yBecause people are a resource to a company nothing more. And since profit motive is the position a company always works from they will routinely always try to do more with less. And because people are considered a resource they're seldom considered good or bad. You'll always be rated from whatever the avg. Employee is worth.
So ALWAYS remember it's fine to have work relationships, and even friends. But ALWAYS remember it is a business! Even if you work at a company for 20 years. (Which isn't advisable). Always remember they would slit your throat in a second if it saved them a couple dollars. You're only value is what you are currently able to produce. So you must ALWAYS treat the company with the same amount of loyalty. Always KNOW your value and demand compensation for your effort. And never be afraid to leave and go to a competitor that will give you what your worth.

+1 yProfit. A business exists to make a profit for it owner (s). Employees are often a necessary byproduct. In order to maximize profits, businesses will attempt to pay the minimum required to achieve the desired result. If I can get the job done efficiently by a willing individual for $20/hour, why would I want to pay $30/hour? If Jim and Bill work equally well, and Jim will work 40 hours @ $20, why would I want to pay Bill for 30 hours at $30, spending more for less output?

You don't think they become that rich by good business practice, do you?
Nope, they steal and shave wages from the lower end of the scale to enrich themselves instead.
It's called "working poor" and it's basically modern day slavery by another name. At the top of the "food chain" of these working poor, are normally White multi-millionaires with dreams of being a billionaire.

Anonymous(18-24)+1 yTheir only concern is the business making money. If they need people to cover hours, they will do that. If you find some way to bring in more money for the business, then your pay will go up, and your ability to negotiate better hours. Nothing else will get their attention except you bringing in more money when others don't.

If you and I both run a farm and you pay your workers more, I will be able to price my produce lower than you, and I will steal your sales and put you out of business so I can expand my business. being in business isn't easy. One stroke of bad lick and you go broke. Over 80% of new restuarants fail.
