Multiple consecutive life sentences are not ludicrous and this is perhaps because you don't understand the nuances of sentencing.

A convict is sentenced for EACH crime that the convict committed.

Now, depending on the nature of the crime and the number and nature of the victims, sentences may be concurrent or consecutive.

As part of the sentencing process, criminal defense and prosecution lawyers may write sentencing memoranda explaining an appropriate sentence for the convict.

However, when the judge issues the sentencing order, the judge may/must (depending on jurisdiction) also file a memorandum and, in this memorandum, the judge explains the rationale behind the sentence that was given.

Here's an example of what I am talking about...
If you remember the 2020 killing of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police, the actual killer was Derek Chauvin. Ultimately, he was given 270 months in prison minus the 199 days he had already served before the sentencing order was issued.

Here's a different example in which the United States Department of Justice charged Siemens, the German conglomerate, with violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. In this sentencing memorandum, the DOJ explains why it believes that over $440 million is an appropriate sentence.

My point in all of this is that sentencing is not a waive of the hand decision. For one thing, if it was, then criminal defense lawyers would be filing appeals (and winning) that the sentence for their client (the convict) violates the 8th Amendment against cruel and unusual punishment. The Sentencing Memorandum issued by the sentencing judge is a paper trail / cover-your-ass document so that a sentence makes sense.

@abc3643 No, I meant concurrent; I'd heard of consecutive life sentences before, as stupid as the idea is. Adding additional months or years makes sense; that actually increases the time. Unless he's going to be revived from the dead to spend MORE time in prison, however, there's no point in multiple life sentences. You'd likely say that separate per-crime sentencing makes sense if one gets overturned due to (for example) exonerating evidence being discovered- fair enough. But five life sentences for three murders doesn't- that means that at least one of those counts had MULTIPLE life sentences attached. That could be used as a mitigating parole factor- but again, he doesn't have that.

Well, a few things:
I don't understand why 5 life sentences were given.
He killed his two daughters and his pregnant wife who was 15 weeks pregnant.
Now, life sentences can be given out for more than just murder.
He was facing a total of 9 counts and took the plea bargain.

Here are the 5 life sentences:
1. For the murder of the wife
2. For the murder of one daughter
3. For the murder of the other daughter
4. For the murder of a child under 12 when the murderer is person in a position of authority
5. For the murder of a child under 12 when the murderer is person in a position of authority

He gets 3 consecutive life sentences for the individual murders but, because of the nature of his daughters, he violated an additional law. So, because there are two distinct murder charges for each daughter, those 2 extra charges are served concurrently with the initial murder charges of the daughters.

Sentencing is mathematics and that's why he got the sentence that he got.
