Why did New York become so left wing when 15-20 years ago New York was pretty conservative?

Kind of strange I’m from Manhattan and I grew up going to my fathers condo in Miami, and my mom moved to Orange County California for a few years. New York was politically close to Florida in like 2008 maybe even more socially conservative than Florida in the 2000s. No stigma for saying anything “racist” or “homophobic” and people generally did not believe in climate change but now New York seems just as liberal as California, maybe even more liberal nowadays. It is crazy how fast New York changed politically and I think it’s related to the abortion bans throughout our country.

New York liberal and California liberal are pretty distinctively different, but even the Democratic platform is radically different from 20 years ago too - in fact, if someone ran today on Obama's 2008 platform, they would inevitably be smeared as a "far-right radical fascist homophobe."

Somehow enough welfare recipients were brought in so that democrats have been getting elected. It probably started with Hillery. I knew some guys that lived upstate and they thought that Hillery running for senate was a joke. They were shocked when she actually won. Things went downhill after that. After Guiliani was mayor the city went down the tubes. DeBlasio was a disaster.

Apart from George Pataki, the state of New York had only Democratic governors and senators since the mid-1970s. So I would argue, your memories are deceiving you.

New York is a state and most of the state leans conservative for the exception of New York city which has nearly half of the whole state population.
