There's a statue of Gen William Worth in NYC, and I'll wager 99% of New Yorkers have no idea who he is, so don't give me the argument that without monuments, people wouldn't know history. We have textbooks, non-fiction, lectures, etc to teach history.

For those of you saying "it's history," answer me this: is there any historical figure or group that does not deserve a monument? If monuments teach history, should any person or group be off limits to having a monument dedicated to him/them?

Monuments don’t so much educate as remind us of our history. Those who fail to remember the past are doomed to repeat it. Tourists don’t come here to read our history books either. Monuments also serve the purpose of concisely highlighting important people and events for interested visitors. It’s narcissistic to think foreigners will visit to listen to modern US citizens bicker about veganism and flat Earth. Ell oh ell!
Also, the “tear all the monuments down” crowd tends to be the feelings over facts clan. They need to be reminded of history more than most. They just don’t know what is good for them. It doesn't matter if anyone knows who the monument is about. But if all Confederate monuments were torn down, it would be like denying that the American Civil War ever existed, and that would be bad.

And, despite what people may think, Southerners who fought in the Civil War did so because they were defending their homes (most could care less about slavery or states rights or whatever other cause of the war you want to think of), and many died doing that. As The History Guy says, that is worth remembering.
