In some places it's optional if you can show that you have the resources to cover damage. In other words you can self insure. That should be an option everywhere. The minimum insurance requirements are pretty low. It would not be difficult for many people to have that much money put aside.

I could see a rule that the money has to be in some kind of special account where it can't be used for other things, but you can still withdraw any interest, dividends or gains above the minimum requirement.

i can remember when a lot of states did nor require it. Florida being one of them. My brother went to school there and used to tell me that lots of times people would get into an accident and take off.

I looked it up and got very mixed results. I don't want to spend an hour digging into it. But apparently there are at least ten states that allow it for regular people. There are several more that allow it for companies with fleets of cars. You have to post a bond with the state which varies from about 20K to well over 100K.

Yea, hit and runs are very common. There are also a lot of scams. I got taken by a scam when I was in my early 20s. Or I should say my insurance company got taken by a scam. I didn't realize it was a scam until years later.

We have car insurance to protect other drivers, which frankly is the same reason we have laws and fire departments.

We can argue if Insurance really is the appropriate means of protection in that it is premised on the idea that rather than being a incentive to avoid accidents. Insurance is to be a guarantee that you can pay for a presumed unavoidable accident.

In this regard Car insurance unlike health insurance is more correctly justified.

Health insurance by contrast is about risk to yourself not others, and thou holding the same premise of unavoidability really that is the nature of insurance. Your health like your car is still very much in your control.

Such operation is a societal PRIVILEGE, not a 'right'.

FAR TOO GREAT DAMAGES can and DO occur from 'negligent operation'
of over a TON of steel under minimal, often apathetic guidance!
Consider the damages of 'car jacking' thefts!

Not that I believe it. But I read a article a few months back that said the advent of self driving cars will largely render the auto insurance industry obsolete in about a decade. I don't think people will accept that in such a short period, if ever.
