Can u grab food left outside?

Ok so I went to a Walmart later at night , the parking lot was empty, and I noticed a small box with bananas in it. I parked my car and looked around , nobody in sight , I waited a while then I just decided to take the bananas since they were starting to go bad from being outside so long. I got out to take the box then a guy ACROSS the street and two blocks down started running at me and hollering ! I seen him and turned to give him the box but I noticed he was running like he was going to kill me so I yelled oops sorry put the box down and left. Then he followed me to the car and started threatening me , he was Chinese and said he was going to call the cops , the police , the rcmp, and the army for stealing his bananas ! I couldn’t help but laugh that was a weird thing to say. Then he got really mad and demanding I call the police on myself , so I did , and the lady ended up telling him that if he doesn’t leave immediately she will send police to arrest him and I did nothing wrong here. But I feel so guilty , the parking lot was completely vacant and it just looked like someone had forget them and they were already browning from being left outside so long. Was I in the wrong
