Do you believe your boss, or more specifically, the HR department at your company has the right to access your social media?

More specifically do you believe they have the right to your password to access things like Facebook, Twitter and the like so they can inspect all of your posts?

I would say they don’t have the RIGHT in terms of they aren’t entitled to my privacy.


But, if they want to view my social media, I don’t have a problem with it either.


They are free to see what I’ve posted publicly.


It would be different if I had a private account and they demanded access.


But, I leverage my social media to land income opportunities so it’s basically like my immersive resume.


In fact, I’d be more likely to land an opportunity if they viewed my social media versus if they didn’t.


But, not everyone uses social media that way, so to each their own. 🍻

I notice that when you pay to do a background check on someone that Social Media is something that is on the list of things they can check for.
I think employer's have been looking a their employees social media backgrounds for a long time now. It's a good way to find out what type the person is.
These days we are living in, doing a background check on people you let into your company should be a must for everyone's protection.

one of my employers tried to pull my social media data, but because im not searchable, Like unless you're already my friend, you can't even search me, They couldnt find anything.. Because of that they demanded my passwords to my accounts. i told them to fuck off..

That would absolutely be grounds for me to refuse a job offer, even though I barely even use social media - there is no way in hell they can have access to my accounts. The only companies I can think of who would actually have a reason for this is if your job involves marketing your likeness, such as being a news anchor, in which case they don't want your personal views being conflated with those of the company.

Simply checking social media posts is a different story, and by all means go ahead. They won't see anything other than vacation photos from 2019 or earlier.

No, I don't care if your a company spokes person, unless the company is prepared to pay you for every hour of your life, they are not entitled to any say whatsoever on what you do in the hours they are NOT paying you.

To allow any such control is to allow your Boss to steal from you more than 3/4th of your life in exchange for paying for less than 1/4th. That is at best thief!

You never agreed to that and unless your making more than 4 times the minimum wage in your state you couldn't have even agreed to that legally.

While, I think it wrong, companies do monitor employes' social media. Asking for passwords, to me, is a whole other level of wrong.

On a similar note my work flat out tells us do not post work related topics to your social media.

I have had one coworker terminated because of a tiktok she made and I can think of quite a few coworkers that have been disciplined for various posts they made.

Right! I created a fake Facebook just for this reason, and my personal Facebook is unsearchable by anyone who is not already my friend.

It is a violation of the natural right of trade for them to make demands of you, which you didn't agree to sell.

After all a service contract known as employment is nothing more than the trading of a period of your time to an employer in exchange for some other kind of compensation.

They are buying the right to control what you do and say in that time, for them to demand in any capacity the same right over any period of time they did not so buy is simply thief.

Social media lets them know for the first time what your doing but it doesn't entitle them to any say over it, and thus likewise it does not entitle them to punish you for disregarding said say.

For them to for example withdraw your trade on said account is for them to claim power over the time they did not buy and thus claiming they did in fact buy it.

Well there are 168 hours in a week, most people sell 40 of those hours and the goverment for most jobs requires 1.5 rate of pay for the remaining 128 hours.

Therefore for their claim to even be legally possible they would have had to paid you 4.8 times the minimum wage in your state or city to even be enough to cover being entitled to a say over all that much of your life.

People put their whole lives on social media for all the world to see. What makes you think the HR dept or your boss won't look at it too. When I hired people I used to check them out on the web all the time.

I think you missed the point of the question. It's asking if an employer should be able to demand your passwords.

This happened to me because my FB is entirely unsearchable, like unless I'm already your friend, you simply cannot find me, that made the company demand my passwords, so I refused.

I went through this with my last employer who would not accept that my home life and work life are two completely separate things.

i agree.. you should read more of the question. Its specifically talking about the employer asking for passwords to your social media accounts. This happened to me because my FB is not searchable, like unless im already your friend you can't search me and find me on facebook.
