Eh, I think the reporter is blowing this out of proportion. It seems like they only want to apply this to official documents. It's completely reasonable that proper Italian should be used on such documents. This phenomena is prevalent throughout Europe and it is the fault of young people, because they think they sound cool by mixing in English words with their native language, when really, they sound like retards. So I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to encourage proper use of their native language, especially on official documents. While fining them does seem cruel, I can't really think of any other way to force people to start speaking properly.

But I think the reporter blew a lot of this out of proportion. Those movements she mentioned aren't necessarily a war against English, but a fight to preserve their native language. Most people will acknowledge that English is the universal language, and that you can have both.

But for the love of God people, please stop mixing English words into your native language. I'm mainly looking at YOU Indians.

Italians who use English and other foreign words in "official communications ". That makes sense as it should be in Italian. That's like using Japanese in Russian documents, it doesn't make any sense. It's nothing to do with any other country but Italians in Italy making Italian documents. You can't use Spanish in your marriage certificate.

I've been to Italy and Italians are some of the most egotistical people on earth. Once you get south of Tuscany and Emilia Romana, it feels like a third world country, yet Italians think so highly of themselves.

English is the most economically valuable language on earth being the language of most wide spread trade and information.
If you want people to use your language locally you have to make it very costly, particularly in a tourist driven country like Italy where business will want the competitive edge by offering better support in the most widely know language.
