Carmakers force people to pay for many useless things. Eliminating AM radio will not save much money and it will limit people's listening choices. AM radio is home for most of talk radio and most of talk radio is conservative. Is this just another way to silence these voices, ?
895 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I think it's a move to push more satellite radio. As far as censorship it won't achieve much as many popular talk radio stations are already on FM, the ones to get hit the most will be in rural areas as FM broadcasting doesn't cover nearly as large of a area as AM radio, nor is it as cheap to broadcast as the equipment is far more simple, and again covers a larger area.
It's also why you see many more HAM radio operators in rural areas. The whole digital antenna thing pushed more rural homes towards satellite TV as if you have an old dial TV you had two channel knobs, one with your low number channels, the other with high channel knobs. The low channels could bounce off the atmosphere like AM, VHF, while the high channel couldn't, UHF, VHF just needed the bunny ears, while UHF needed the big antenna on a tree or roof.
Regardless, trying to push out AM won't get rid of it in rural areas, or stop aftermarket, it'll push more people to buy the satellite subscriptions and pair with their phone for music since FM loses signal so easily.00 Reply

+1 yI think its stupid but has nothing to do with censorship of conservative voices on AM, such assumption is too far fetch and doesn't make logical sense.
With your phone you can listen to several conservative podcasts 24/7 literally.05 Reply- +1 y
a lot of people that listen to AM radio are old and would never listen to the radio on a cell phone, My wife deals with the elderly a lot and a lot of them cannot afford cable so their news is limited to the 3 networks. Most have no idea that there is an invasion at out border or that Joe Biden's son is involved in business dealings with foreign countries and kicks back 10% to his father,
- +1 y
Dude it's electric cars that are ditching AM radios for now and if a person has a electric car then they definitely afford cable news as well.
And within the next 10 years most elderly will be dead or not driving anymore.
And within 15 years from now most people will just be listening to XM radio in their car for their conservative news. - +1 y
@Hispanic-Cool-Guy. No way would I pay a monthly fee to listen to the radio. Maybe this is what the my are trying to do.
- +1 y
Yes, I guess. If theirs more money to be made by these companies then they will do it.
They figure people that are seriously into AM radio will definitely willing to be their $5 or $10 a month fee for it.
Times that several millions of people and that's billions of dollars made a year by them. - +1 y
* to pay
+1 yWTF is AM? Who even listens to the radio anymore? My Dodge Challenger has a thumb drive port where I can listen to my own home made music. I haven't liatened to AM radio , or FM, for years.

+1 yThis applies to electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids, not to gas- or diesel-powered vehicles. Many automakers already exclude AM radios from their EVs because the EV electronics and motors cause interference that makes for poor audio quality on the AM radio; it doesn't affect FM or satellite radio.
Here's a good description of it...
Automakers Are Starting to Drop AM Radio in New Cars. Here’s Why
Although there may be political effects, the reason is purely technical.
01 Reply 5.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I doubt car makers will get rid of AM radio for a variety of reasons.
First, AM radio is still the best radio for long distance especially at night.
I can drive in Ohio at night and hear baseball broadcasts from Baltimore and New York to Saint Louis.Second, AM radio is where most talk radio is and that's a strong format. Especially for conservatives.
Third, AM radio is critical in large markets where all-news stations are. In those markets, a commuter without AM radio is going to be a bit grumpy not having traffic reports or news or some Limbaugh-wannabee to listen to. If I lived in one of those markets and was looking to buy a car, that's a red flag if the car doesn't have an AM radio.
Fourth, sports broadcasts are more often on AM radio than FM radio.

"AM radio is undisputedly the most reliable form of communication during emergencies.
And it’s not only small markets that depend on getting crucial information out via the airwaves — every major city uses AM alerts during manmade and natural disasters. "
...
"Broadcast AM radio is an essential part of our emergency-alert infrastructure, and it’s an integral piece of American history."
===============
Allegedly, and I can believe it, the reception of AM radio signals will be significantly adversely affected by the electromagnetic interference generated in electric vehicles. Thus, why bother with AM in those vehicles if you only hear static? I haven't looked into this, but I am certain that there will be a workaround at some point if this is true. - +1 y
Radio Silent: Tesla, Ford And More EVs Phase Out AM Radio
www.forbes.com/.../?sh=4896f72c1a26
Several prominent carmakers have decided for some of their models to drop AM radio from the dashboard. Most of the car models are electric vehicles (EVs). Automobile companies have noted electromagnetic interference with AM radio’s reception created by electric motors.
New EVs manufactured by BMW, Porsche, Audi, Volvo, Ford F-150 Lightning truck, Volkswagen SUV and Tesla Model S have dropped AM radio. Ford announced in March plans to phase out AM radio in most of its new and updated car models, even those with internal combustion engines. Ford will keep AM radio in the Mustang Mach-E. Hyundai, which makes electric vehicles, said in a statement that it had no plans to phase out AM radio.
Today, broadcast radio continues to be the most popular source of in-car entertainment. Furthermore, over 40% of all radio listening is done in cars more than either at work or in the home.

47 Reply- +1 y
And how would „they“ do this exactly, with 865.451.999 radios in the population? 🤦‍♂️
- +1 y
@DryGermanGuy why did they cancel Trump?
- +1 y
I never noticed „they“ did. Trump and his shenanigans are broadcasted on every channel, continuously. Who would want to miss the chance to learn about his great collection cards? 🙄
- +1 y
@DryGermanGuy well they did cancel him before and shut him down everywhere it wasn't until they learned how monopoly works how someone can buy all. the shares and take over a site and reinstate anyone they want.
- +1 y
@DryGermanGuy Carmakers have proposed this. I suspect there is collusion between carmaker and the government, maybe tied to the tax breaks people will get for buying electric cars. Most people that work for a living are Trump supporters and many listen to talk radio during g the daily commute. This will limit their access to an important source of information.
- +1 y
Since there are probably ~one billion radio units around in the United States, this will limit access to nothing.
- +1 y
@DryGermanGuy you better order yours before they sell out
5.8K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. That's a very poorly hidden ulterior motive, and the reasoning behind it is obviously BS.
That said, I don't actually know anyone who uses talk radio as a primary news source anymore. Podcasts seem to have replaced them, and even the major radio names are on XM now.
02 Reply897 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. No I wouldn´t assume that. I´d rather say less people especially in the younger generations listen to the radio. Nowadays people use other ways to get news or listen to music. So carmakers follow the trend and therefore consider a radio unnecessary and don´t put it in a car.

+1 yI doubt that's the motivation, but I don't understand what would be; I find it hard to believe that'd save more than a few dozen dollars on the cost of a car. Radios aren't exactly pricey.
01 Reply6.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. No, it's an engineering and marketing decision. There isn't that much demand for it, and without otherwise unnecessary shielding, electric cars interfere with AM reception.
00 Reply12.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Who the fuck still listens to AM radio, other than meth makers in trailer parks?

+1 yConservative radio hosts dominate AM radio , so they don't want people to hear the truth. Another reason Tucker was let go. He would saying what the facts were and how Democrats were doing things.
05 Reply- +1 y
Then why would Tucker constantly ridicule Trump and his election lies etc. in the internal FOX emails published during discovery? Does he have a split personality or something?
- +1 y
@DryGermanGuy those were pre Trump. Tucker was not for Trump, now he thinks he was a great President
- +1 y
You are testing my patience. His remarks came to light during the whole right-wing mess of denying the 2020 election. Nothing else would be the point for Dominion to get from FOX. Do you even know how your law system works?

@DryGermanGuy And they were emails from 4 years ago.

The emails are obviously from around Nov. 2020 till after the Jan. 6th 2021 insurrection. Do the math yourself.
